Attention: Please return all those foul balls

Who says Bill Belichick is humorless?

His dog at the computer for the Pats’ first NFL Draft pick, an empty room for the next one … perfect.

Must have greatly annoyed Roger Goodell.

APRIL 26, 1950 – “Mario J. Vagge, president of the Central New England semi-pro baseball league, appeared before the Board of Aldermen at the close of the meeting last evening to ask consideration of eased-up arrangements for the use of Holman Stadium under the lights to provide Nashua with baseball this summer.”

After agreeing with the light fee, Vagge said the $25 clean-up fee “seemed a little steep.

“He likewise pointed out that the backstop was not high enough to prevent the loss of balls,” at a cost of $25 a dozen.

Vagge said the Dodgers used 125 dozen baseballs in 1949 and that if the backstop weren’t made higher, he would operate at a loss.

APRIL 26, 1960 – “A successful opening was registered by the Nashua High baseball nine yesterday afternoon at Holman Stadium as Dick Beaupre and Tom Gondek teamed up to toss a three-hitter at Spaulding of Rochester and lead the Purple to an 8-1 triumph.

“And when the time came to collect some runs Nashua’s heavy hitters unleashed a five-hit barrage on the fifth inning and pushed seven runs across.”

APRIL 26, 1965 – “A testimonial dinner in honor of the Class S basketball champions – the Hollis High Cavaliers – was held Saturday night in Walters Auditorium.

“The banquet was sponsored by the newly organized Booster Club of Hollis with Harold King Jr. as master of ceremonies. Rev. Phillip Mitchell of the Hollis Congregational Church opened the program with an invocation.”

APRIL 26, 1975 – “The Nashua High Purple Lassies girls softball team ran its record to 3-0 by downing Manchester Central High, 18-2, at Lyons Field.

“Denise Benson started on the mound for Nashua and allowed two hits and one run before giving way to Debbie Rodier after two innings.

“Rodier struck out six, walked five and surrendered only three hits in picking up the win.”

In softball, of course, there is no mound but a pitchers circle.

APRIL 26, 1990 – “Junior Chip Decato of Merrimack was named winner of the New Hampshire College hockey Most Valuable Player Award at a recent banquet.

“Decato, a first-team East Coast Athletic Conference All Star, had 29 goals amd 24 assists for 53 points, second in the ECAC. He was also named captain for the 1985-86 season.

“Fellow junior Dan Roy, also of Merrimack, was named winner of the Seventh Player Award. Roy had eight goals and 21 assists for 29 points and is third on the school’s career assist list with 69.

“Doug Cote of Nashua, a sophomore defenseman, was presented with the Most Improved Player and Hustle Awards.”
