Nashua CC’s Brown wins City Golf Championship

By Andrew Sylvia - | Jul 22, 2019

Nashua City Golf Champion Jack Brown.

NASHUA – Nothing could separate them on Saturday at Sky Meadow, but two strokes proved to be the difference on Sunday at Nashua Country Club. That two-stroke advantage belonged to Jack Brown as he edged out Austin Baker in the 59th Annual Nashua City Championship Golf Tournament.

Baker’s early lead was negated by three straight birdies by Brown, but Brown’s double bogey on the par-5 seventh hole gave Baker the lead back.

Brown held a one stroke lead heading into the back nine, edging ahead for good with par-3 birdies followed by Baker’s bogeys on 16 and 17.

Both Brown (68, 3-under) and Baker (70, 1-under) were happy to finish an even 72 at Sky Meadow, given the heat and their lack of familiarity at that venue. But expectations were higher for both golfers on Sunday, given that each claims Nashua Country Club as their home course.

Baker felt like he had a chance until the late bogeys, but Brown’s confidence in victory was solid after the pair of birdies.

“Fourteen is really tough, even just par there is good, so when I got two birdies in a row (on 13 and 14), I just put it in cruise control,” he said. “I just used by irons there and hoped to get it close because I had been putting pretty well.”

Green Meadow’s Jeff Monahan finished third with a 2-over 73 on Sunday, putting him 6-over for the tournament.

Souhegan Woods’ Michael Hogan won the senior division, finishing with a 78 on Sunday to put him 22 strokes over par for the two days.

Although Hogan was four strokes off the lead after Saturday and only two strokes back after nine holes on Sunday, the only part of his weekend he was happy with was his 34-stroke back nine to finish out the tournament.

“I was just lucky that nobody else played well, it was a really hot weekend,” said Hogan. “I’m just happy that I played well on the last nine holes.”
