Devito wins State Amateur golf title

By Staff | Jul 14, 2019

Nashua South alum John Devito won the 116th New Hampshire Amateur on Thursday.

Passaconaway Country Club’s John Devito was the top player Monday, shooting 70 on Day 1 of the New Hampshire State Amateur. And the Nashua South grad was clearly best on the final day of the event at Portsmouth Country Club, demolishing Jake Hollander in the 36-hole final, 7-and-6, for his first State Am title.

To the end, on the 30th and final hole Saturday, Devito was nothing but

focused.

“Honestly, I tried not to think about it too much. I couldn’t really let him creep back in. I tried to tell myself we were all square the entire match,” the 29-year-old Devito told the NHGA.

“When I was 6 up at the end, I was still telling myself we were all square to mentally prepare myself.”

Devito dominated on the greens like he did all week.

“Throughout the week it was definitely my putter,” he said.

“The first day, I didn’t miss too many putts. The second round and third round and throughout match play, I was pretty much solid from 10 feet in.”
