Springfield ends Riv men’s volleyball season, 3-0

Revenge of the Pride.
Springfield College, the top ranked NCAA Division III men’s volleyball team in the country, showed Saturday how much it didn’t like losing to Rivier University in straight sets back in late February at home.
On that same floor in Springfield, Mass., the Pride (27-2) swept the No. 12 ranked Raiders 3-0 in the NCAA quarterfinals, and now move on to the Final Four next weekend.
The Raiders season ended with set scores of 25-13, 25-19 and 25-21. Still, it was quite a winter/spring, as Riv finished 26-8, with a top 15 national ranking, a Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship and a first round NCAA tourney win (in beating Arcadia on Friday).
They also had the GNAC Offensive Player of the Year in junior Pedro Campos, who Saturday night had 29 assists and five digs. David Smith, also a junior, led Riv once again with 12 kills, followed by Francis Kokoros with eight. Brennen Brandow had 19 kills for the Pride.
The Raiders’ largest lead was 7-5 and 8-6 in the second set. Things were deadlocked in that one at 17 after a Campos block but the Pride finished it with an 8-2 run. Riv’s last lead was 5-4 in the third, and the Raiders were down 22-20 late before Springfield took three of the next four to advance.
