Silver Knights may have a bat attack once they return to field

NASHUA – The Nashua Silver Knights bat attack may eventually be the envy of the Futures League.

When they play, of course. The team had its second straight postponement, as the storms the area was expecting late in the day forced the rescheduling of Sunday’s 5 p.m. game vs. North Shore to a Monday doubleheader at Holman Stadium beginning at 5 p.m.

In two of their last three games, the Silver Knights have scored 14 runs. They had 10 hits in a 4-3 loss to Pittsfield in between.

Jeff Costello, who went 2 for 3 with an RBI and scored four times in Friday’s 14-3 win at North Shore, was the second hitter in the league at last look at .367. The team just picked up proven run producers Jake Lebel and Alex Brickman in the last week, and are hoping Ryan Berardino (sore knee) can bet back into the lineup after sitting out Friday. That’s not a bad look from perhaps the third through the seventh spot in the order.

“We’re doing better,” Silver Knights manager B.J. Neverett said. “We’re hanging tough.”

But now the club, very young at the start of the season, has some veteran leaders.

“Brickman will add some experience and leadership,” Neverett said. “But we’re getting a lot of leadership out of Jake Lebel. He’s really been amazing. He really just stepped right in. He’s an older guy, and he’s really becoming a leader on the team, especially in the dugout. This is one of the nicest group of kids I can remember as a group. Just good kids.”

It will be interesting to see if they can hit their way out out a 7-12 start. Costello bounced back well Friday from an 0-for-5 on Thursday.

“That’s what we have to do every day,” Costello said. “It’s been great, especially with the addition of Jake in the four spot. Everyone’s swinging the ball well. Can’t wait to see where this team goes.”

With Reagan going to Texas at the beginning of July, Neverett said the club would be eventually adding a player. “We’re working on that now,” he said….

Senior citizens get into today’s twinbill for $1, and coffee for them will be free…

Since both Saturday’s and Sunday’s game were wiped out, that will put both Nashua scheduled starters, lefty Geoff Mosseau and righty Casey Candiotti on the mound for today’s two seven-inning games.
