Milford’s Stimson joins college coaching ranks

By Staff | Mar 14, 2013

Jamee Stimson wasn’t looking for a college coaching position, but one came looking for her.

The former Milford High School and Fordham University standout was content to coach volleyball at the high school level, because she liked her day job, as an allocation analyst at New Balance.

But when the coach at Lesley University decided to step down, she encouraged Stimson, a friend, to apply. She wouldn’t have to give up her full-time job and the Cambridge campus was close to home and work.

For the past three seasons, Stimson has made a somewhat lengthy commute to coach at Ashland (Mass.) High School. She led her team to two state tournaments and was the 2011 Tri-Valley League coach of the year.

And recently, she accepted the head coaching position at Lesley.

“The biggest challenge will be recruiting,’’ Stimson said. “I’ll need to dedicate some time to it because I’ve never done it before.’’

As a high school athlete, Stimson was among the top players in state history, winning back-to-back Gatorade Player of the Year awards and leading Milford to Division II titles in 2001 and 2002.

Stimson accepted a scholarship to Fordham and went on to become one of the school’s all-time greats.

She’s sixth all-time in kills (1,169) and fourth in service aces with 144. She was the first player in program history to be named Atlantic 10 First Team All-Conference and was team captain her senior year.

“We are thrilled to have Jamee Stimson as our new coach,’’ Lesley Athletic Director Jen Benway said. “Jamee brings a wealth of playing experience, extensive knowledge of the game and a passion for coaching at the college level.’’

Stimson is a big proponent of off-season training and has taken on another responsibility, overseeing Boston Beach Volleyball, a league that plays summer matches at South Boston’s Carson Beach.

“It’s a different game, and I think it makes you a well-rounded player,’’ Stimson said of beach volleyball. “You have to constantly be aware of what is happening on the other side of the net and it’s a great workout.’’

Lesley plays in the New England Collegiate Conference with Daniel Webster College in Nashua, as well at Elms College, Southern Vermont, Regis, Newbury, Becker, Mitchell and Bay Path.

Connor Green

Amherst College freshman Connor Green came off the bench to score four points and grab four rebounds in an 89-72 victory over Plattsburg on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Division III Basketball Tournament.

Amherst will play Randolph Macon in the Sectional Final on Saturday.

Green, who helped lead Bishop Guertin to a Division I title two years ago, is averaging 9.1 points off the bench for Amherst and is second on the team in 3-pointers made with 42.

Bill Ferriter

Bill Ferriter of Nashua has been the starting center fielder and lead-off hitter in all 12 games so far for the University of Connecticut baseball team.

Ferriter is tied for third on the team in batting average so far at .288 and is also tied for third in hits with 15. He has a .397 on base percentage.

Chelsea Larivee

Junior Chelsea Larivee of Amherst had the Bentley University women’s lacrosse team on the brink of an upset in its season opener.

Two late second half goals by Larivee gave the Falcons an 11-9 lead over Rollins College, currently ranked fourth in the country in Division II.

But two late goals by Rollins and another in the second overtime gave them a 12-11 victory. Last year as a sophomore, Larrivee was third on a team in goals (27) and total points (38) last year as a sophomore.

Michaela McGowan

Newbury College freshman Michaela McGowan of Nashua is doing it all so far for the Newbury College softball team.

McGowan has played in all eight games so far, dividing her time between pitching and playing the infield. She leads the team in hitting at .435, in RBIs with six and in doubles with four.

In six appearances as a pitcher, including five starts, McGowan is 2-3 with a 3.73 ERA. She was named the New England College Conference Rookie of the Week.
