Racecar driving school topping Lee ballot articles

By Staff | Mar 10, 2013

LEE – Voters will take to the polls Tuesday to weigh on each of the six warrant articles that prompted debate, discussion and some revision during a well-attended deliberative session last month.

Prompting the most discussion was the racecar driving school, Article 3 on the warrant, for which residents voiced both concern over noise levels and support of Lee Speedway expanding business, something Selectmen Chair John LaCourse said he was supportive of.

Article 3 petitioned voters to amend the ordinance so as to allow for the school without considering the driving school sessions an “event.” Currently, Lee Speedway is allowed 23 events between April and October. The driving school would allow 28 sessions no more than four times per month between those same months and allow no more than four NASCAR-like stock vehicles on the track between the hours of noon and 6 p.m.

Owner John MacDonald said expanding the business was the main intent of the driving school, not to create more noise in the area, as the speedway was looking for more ways to create income, he said.

He said the driving school would not come anywhere near the level of noise making created by the 70 to 100 cars operating during Friday night races and that this option is a way to generate revenue with the business in order to be able to pay taxes on the property.
