IRC coaches, juniors race at Black Fly Regatta
On Saturday June 23, the coaches and members of Independence Rowing Club’s High School Team participated in Vermont’s Black Fly Regatta.
This regatta is renowned as the largest mass start regatta in North America. 64 single and double sculling boats lined up across the Comerford Reservoir on the Connecticut River, waited for the starting gun and then jockeyed for position as they rowed upstream to the finish line. All told, the club members rowed a total of 6,000 meters. Race course conditions were favorable with sunny skies, a light breeze and a light current.
Cameron Jackson and Nick Sengstaken of Hollis came in first in the Men’s Junior Double Race, Jared Guidoboni of Tyngsboro, Mass. came in second in the Men’s Junior Single Race and teammate, Aidan Bailey of Amherst, placed third. Coaches K.C. Lumbard of Hollis and Molly Lai placed first in the Women’s Open Double Race. The team was thrilled to bring home a variety of prizes, including fresh eggs, cheddar cheese and honey from Littleton.
Summer programs for youth and adults started this week at IRC and will run through the end of August. For more information, contact Coach K.C. Lumbard at independence.rowing@gmail.com.
