Local athletes making their college choices

By Staff | Nov 16, 2011

Four area players who have had outstanding high school careers signed or are about to sign letters of intent to play in college.

Alvirne senior Taylor Carbone, who pitched the Broncos to the Division I softball title last spring, is headed to the University of Massachusetts. Bishop Guertin catcher Jacklyn Dubois of Mont Vernon signs Tuesday with the University of Connecticut.

Souhegan senior pitcher Terry Dugdale accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Albany and Nashua basketball standout Samantha Brenner, in her fourth year at New Hampton Prep, is going to the University of Vermont.

Carbone, a dominant pitcher the last three years at Alvirne who led the Broncos to the Division I title last spring, is signing on at UMass as an infielder/outfielder.

“Taylor brings us great versatility as a middle of the order type hitter,’’ head coach Elaine Sortino said in a statement on Carbone’s signing. “The fact that she can play multiple infield positions, the outfield and even pitches makes her a great asset.’’

Carbone struck out 226 batters in 135 innings last spring with a 0.62 earned run average and hit .522. The three-time Telegraph Player of the Year was named the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year.

Dubois, a teammate of Carbone’s for years on summer teams, fell in love with UConn on her visit last November. She has made a remarkable recovery from a ruptured ACL tear suffered in 2008 after her freshman season at BG and is one of the state’s top catchers.

“There were moments when I wondered if I’d ever be able to catch again,’’ Dubois said. “It took a lot of hard work, but I was 100 percent again a year later.

Last spring, Dubois help lead the Cardinals into the Division I semifinals and also finished second in both indoor and outdoor track in the shot put.

Brenner officially accepted a full scholarship last Wednesday. She was voted her team’s most valuable player last winter after a 17-4 season.

“I chose the University of Vermont because I felt most comfortable with the coach (Lori Gear McBride) there,’’ Brenner said. “I think the direction she’s going in has great things in store.’’

Brenner went on to thank her coach at New Hampton the last three years, Darren Redman, and AAU coach Scott Hazelton, who is now the head coach at Bishop Guertin.

For Dugdale, a four-year varsity player, the decision came down to Albany, UMass-Lowell and Franklin Pierce. He liked the Albany campus and the chance to play Division I baseball in the America East Conference.

He said one of the biggest influences on his baseball career was middle school coach Tim Lambrou, who cut him in the seventh grade.

“It inspired me to work harder,’’ Dugdale said. “I started seeing a pitching coach, I was determined to make the team the next year.’’

Dugdale did and made the varsity as a freshman at Souhegan. He lost just one start as a junior, to Bedford’s Joey Maher, who signed with the Yankees last summer. Last spring Dugdale had a 2.42 ERA and averaged two strikeouts an inning.

Schaller leads Providence

Tim Schaller of Merrimack is the leading scorer so far this season for the Providence College hockey team.

The junior center had eight goals and two assists through 10 games. Schaller, who played junior hockey for the New England Huskies, had five goals and 14 assists in 34 games last winter.

He was named Hockey East player of the week on Nov. 7 after scoring four goals in two games, including his first career hat trick in a 5-2 victory over Vermont.

Hogan starts fast

Sophomore guard Kelsey Hogan, who led the America East Conference in 3-point field goal percentage last winter, hit four of five treys in her team’s season opening 62-57 victory over Brown.

Hogan had a team-high 17 points and also grabbed a career-high nine rebounds for the Wildcats.

Cray posts TD

Hamilton College senior Ryan Cray of Amherst caught a touchdown pass in the final game of his college career, a 28-15 victory over Bates.

Cray, who caught a 24-yard pass to make it 21-7 early in the second quarter, finished the season with 22 catches for 241 yards.

O’Kane lights lamp

Senior assistant captain Pat O’Kane of Hollis has four goals in five games so far this year for the Assumption College men’s ice hockey team.

O’Kane, a Bishop Guertin graduate, had 13 goals and 27 assists last winter after scoring 26 goals and assisting on 14 goals as a sophomore.
