Time Travel: Birdie brings Teddy to town

SEPT. 17, 1947 – From sports editor Frank Stawasz’s column:

“Ted Williams, in town over the weekend with Birdie Tebbetts, was slightly astonished when told that home run hitters (for the Nashua Dodgers) have been collecting handsome purses from the fans.

” ‘I’d like to play for the Nashua club myself if that’s the way the fans do it here,’ Ted said.

“Frankly, we’d have liked to have had Williams playing for the Dodgers. So would the Dodgers, huh?”

SEPT. 18, 1972 – “Tom Monahan shot a final round of 76 at the Green Meadow Golf Club for a four-round total of 299 and the City Golf Tournament championship. Paul Moriarty fired a blistering 73 but ended four strokes back.

“Dave Friel copped the Junior trophy by placing third overall with a 308 total after shooting a 79 in yesterday’s final round. Rounding out the top 10 in the tourney were Bruce Morrison, 308; John Wollen, 310; Bill Soubosky, 312; Bill Lochhead, 312; Mike Jordan, 313; and Val Poulin, 318.”

SEPT. 19, 1977 – “A controversial interception halted a Merrimack drive late in the fourth quarter and the Bishop Guertin Cardinals held on to defeat the Tomahawks for their first win of the season, 19-7.

“The pass interception came on a first-down play from the Merrimack 40. Tomahawk quarterback Nick Pirog dropped back and threw a long pass to Mike Hannan at the Guertin 35. Hannan was covered closely by the Cardinals’ Al Lenzi and both players leaped for Pirog’s spiral.

“It appeared that Hannan had made a spectacular catch, but after he and Lenzi hit the ground, it was Lenzi who got up in possession of the ball.”

SEPT. 20, 1982 – ” ‘The football up here is fun,’ said first-year head coach Brian Irwin of the Milford AREA Senior High School football team – and with good reason.
