AUGUST 27, 1962 – “Two Nashua entries in the Invitational Softball Tournament in Gardner, Mass., lost their opening games last Saturday.

Club National, city champion, bowed to the Hillside team of Fitchburg, 3-1, and the Bronze Craft Corp. team was edged by the Leominster Eagles, 3-2.

“Both Stan Ryan of the Nationals and Ollie Clark of Bronze Craft pitched outstanding games but lost in unearned runs.”

AUGUST 28, 1967 – “George Marineau won his fifth consecutive city singles championship, then combined with his partner, Don Chartier, to regain the city doubles championship in the City Tennis Tournament held at the North Common tennis courts over the weekend.

“… In the doubles final Marineau and Chartier, showing why they are ranked 10th in the state, easily defeated Arnie Foster and John Cepaitis, 6-0 and 6-2. … With rain causing many scheduling problems, Marineau won the singles title by default.”

AUGUST 29, 1977 – “Area baseball fans who traveled to Manchester’s Tom Padden Field on Saturday were treated to baseball at its best as the Nashua South team edged Nashua North, 3-2, to annex the 1977 State Independent Little League championship.

“… South’s John St. Hilaire and North’s Mike Brown both pitched superbly as they both went the distance. Brown scattered three hits in five innings while St. Hilaire allowed four hits in six innings.

“South’s Pat Madigan tied the game in the fourth with a home run. In the fifth, Rick Raymond’s basehit brought in Gary Stoncius from third with the deciding run.”

AUGUST 30, 1982 – “Stan’s Place has dominated slo-pitch softball for more than a decade, and this weekend’s championship-winning effort was certainly no exception.

“Stan’s won the Greater Nashua Slo-Pitch softball League title by defeating the Merchants, 15-1. … Stan’s scored in every inning to support the five-inning, shutout pitching of Bill ‘Hawk’ Soubosky. … Scott Thompson was the batting star for Stan’s with five hits in five at bats, including two home runs. Gary Worthen, Adam Gureckis and Ron Beaurivage also homered for the winners.”

AUGUST 31, 1987 – “Jeff Crowley took advantage of chassis changes and Pete Fiandaca’s bad luck to win the late model lightning division feature race at Hudson Speedway on Sunday night.

“Beginning lap 24, Fiandaca was boxed in among five slower cars and he couldn’t accelerate around them. Crowley, finding this excellent opportunity, dove low exiting turn two and in a daring move blasted past the group of slower cars and a frustrated, but helpless, Fiandaca for the lead.”
