Time Travel: Kissell to speak at Lafayette dinner

APRIL 22, 1952 – “A talk by Big John Kissell of the Cleveland Browns professional football team will headline a sports program for members of the Lafayette AC on Thursday evening.

“… In addition to ‘Jarring’ John, the city’s outstanding contributor to the professional grid game, the program will include talk by Nashua High School coaches, Charles ‘Buzz’ Harvey and Anthony Marandos, Frank Stawasz if the Telegraph and Edward F. Lecius of WOTW.”

APRIL 23, 1977 – “Dave Dion, the Hudson stock car champion, is the first entry for the season-opening Thunder 100 NASCAR late-model auto race at Barre’s Thunder Road Speedbowl on Sunday, May 8.

“For the past two years Dion has been the man to beat on the Northern NASCAR circuit, winning 16 features in 1976 and 18 the year before, a total of 34 wins.”

APRIL 24, 1982 – “Kathy Dee of Hollis High School was the star individual of the day, but Alvirne High School was the standout team as the Broncos won a dual track and field meet from the Cavaliers, 85.5-36.5.

“Dee won four events, all individual: The shot put with a toss of 26 feet, 11-3/4 inches, the discus with a throw of 72-2, the javelin at 78-4-1/4, and the 400 meters in 1 minute, 9.3 seconds.”

APRIL 25, 1987 – “Shortstop Peter Hall gave the Merrimack High School baseball team a second chance Friday.

“Hall’s two-run home run in the top of the seventh gave the Tomahawks a 10-10 tie against the Lancers, and the blast turned out to prevent a loss when the game was suspended after seven innings because rain and darkness.

“The game will be completed later in the season.”

APRIL 26, 2017 – “In a Division I showdown in Amherst, Emma Estabrook had three goals, including a key score late in the second half to help the Sabers maintain an 11-8 lead and stay unbeaten (6-0).

“Other Souhegan scorers included Brigid Casey (two goals, one assist), Abby Cranney (two goals), Sammi Jay (two goals), Savannah Behn (goal, assist), Taylor Clark (goal, assist) and Izzy Aiello (one assist).”

APRIL 27, 1962 – “Dick Flagg, former Nashua track star in the field events, continues to shatter discus and shot put marks for the University of Denver.

“The Denver senior staged his most brilliant performance in a tri-meet last week when he heaved the discus 150 feet, 7 inches and later threw the shot put 47 feet, 4-1/2 inches. Denver scored 92 points to win the meet.”

APRIL 28, 1967 – “Larry Cross’ Merrimack High School diamond crew rolled to an easy 9-3 win over Sanborn and boosted their record to 3-0 yesterday afternoon.

“Chris Dittrich walked seven but bailed himself out of trouble on almost every occasional as he struck out eight en route to his second victory of the year.”
