Time Travel: Early battle for high school track
Alan Greenwood
Seventy years ago, Frank Stawasz, then sports editor of the Telegraph, broached a subject that remained on Nashua’s docket for years to come
MARCH 18, 1952 – “Despite the determined prodding of Board member Charles H. Canfield, there’s little or no likelihood of approval for the construction of a cinder track for the high school’s track and field squad. The explanation in a nutshell – the spirit is willing but the pocketbook ain’t. … Just guessing, I’d say $25,000 might give the city a fair cinder track.
“Needless to say that if cinder track had been included in the construction of Holman Stadium, it might have been built for considerably less than a six-room dwelling would cost these days.”
MARCH 19, 1962 – “A senior goaltender and a sophomore right wing from Nashua helped the University of New Hampshire hockey team finish a highly successful season with a 10-7-1 record.
“Goalie Joe Bellavance and forward Pete Merrill were key men for the Wildcats, who lost five of their seven defeats to major college powers.”
MARCH 20, 1972 – “The Nationals became champions of the North Biddy League on Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Kiwanis team 42-37 at the Charlotte Ave. gym.
“Captain Dan Fink set the pace of the game as he led his teammates to victory using a running offense and pressing defense. … Tim Scott led the Nationals scoring with 20 points, 11 in the third quarter. Billy Barry had seven points, Steve Kopka had four points while Fink, Jimmy Parady and Donald Gagnon had three each.
“Sean Irlbacher led Kiwanis with 12 points.”
MARCH 21, 1977 – “St. Joe’s CYO team topped the regular season champions St. Pat’s of Milford 56-48 yesterday to annex the 1977 CYO Deanery championship at the Chestnut St. Gymnastics.
“In the awards ceremony following the title contest an all-league team was chosen. It consisted of Steve Burke, St. Pat, Milford; Dana Dubois, St. Thomas, Derry; Chris Schroeder, Immaculate Conception; Bob Desmarais, Parish of Resurrection; Bruce Badeau, St. Joe’s, Nashua; Rick Piwowarski, St. Stan’s; and John Dion and Marc Russo, St. Pat’s, Nashua.”
MARCH 22, 1992 – “The sport of lacrosse may be closer to being officially recognized by the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association than many people think. A meeting is scheduled fr mid-April at Pinkerton Academy for several of the schools and/or clubs that take part in the sport in the spring.
“… Solid varsities are at Pinkerton Academy, Londonderry, Bishop Guertin, Hanover, Derryfield, and, come next spring, the new Souhegan High School. Recreation clubs are in Dover, Milford/Amherst and Kearsarge.”
MARCH 23, 1967 – “Nashua Country Club fared well in its first Teen-Age Bonspiel at Winchesteer Country Club recently with two all-beginners rinks competing against many seasoned teen-aged curlers.
“Nashua No. 1, skipped by Bruce Henry and including Carolyn Drury, Rusty Hallisey and Pixie Cogswell, defeated Schenectady II after losing to Nutmeg II in their first match and then lost to Petersham in the semifinals of the second event.
“Nashua No. 2, skipped by Geoff Taylor and including Elizabeth Kellog, Gary Wingate and Kathy Taylor, lost its first two matches to Norfolk and Petersham then went on to defeat Winchester IV and Norfolk III and then lost in the finals of the third event to Winchester I.”
MARCH 24, 2017 – “His Southern New Hampshire University men’s basketball career may be over, but Amherst’s Devin Gilligan still has some honors to collect and some basketball to play. The Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year was recently named an All-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).
“He’s the Penmen’s first All-American since 2003, and he’ll be playing on Friday night in the Reese’s/NABC Division II College All-Star Game at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.”
