In honor of curling, which we typically see only during the Winter Olympics:

FEB. 11, 1952 – “Rink No. 2 of the host Nashua Country Club, skipped by Dr. E.J. Belanger, defeated the St. Andrews No. 2 rink of New York City, 16-13, in the exciting final round of the Granite State Bonspiel here yesterday.

“… Other members of the winning Belanger rink are Dr. D.G. Smith, Dr. E.B. Haynes and A.W. Sanborn.”

Apparently initials were the preferred style for identification of Nashua Rink No. 2 players.

FEB. 12, 1962 – “Sophomore Duane Briggs equalled the NHS record in the high jump and scored 8-3/4 points, John Newman scored 10 points and Dick Diggins and Bob Dunbar continued to beat the clock as Nashua High’s track team ran wild over Exeter High and Manchester Central on Saturday.

“The Purple scored 66 points to Exeter’s and Central’s five.”

FEB. 13, 1982 – “Hollis’ John Kallfeiz scored 17 points and Stefan Heline added 12 as the Cavaliers eked out a narrow 50-49 win over Mascenic last night.

“… Hollis led 15-6 after a period and 31-19 at the half. But the visitors kept coming back, outscoring the Cavs 20-8 in the last quarter to nearly win it.”

FEB. 14, 1992 – “Alvirne High School’s Patty Skelton rebounded a missed Merrimack free throw, drove the length of the court and converted a running one-handed layup that ignited a roar from Bronco supporters. The basket looked like any other Skelton layup, but nevertheless, this one was special.

“The hoop was Skelton’s seventh point of the game and gave her 1,001 for her three-year varsity career. She is the first girls basketball player in Alvirne history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.”

FEB. 15, 1977 – “The Merrimack Indians high school hockey club recently defeated Keene, 5-3. Bob Pecardi scored four goals, Rick Labrie scored one, Mike Swenson had two assists while Paul Labrie and Dan Cosgrove had one assist each.”

FEB. 16, 1957 – “Its offense operating superbly and scoring almost at will, Nashua High’s hoop quintet kept its tournament hopes alive by breezing to a 75-40 victory over the Sachems of Laconia at Senior High Gym last night.

“Joe Mills, hitting with deadly accuracy from his favorite corner and Dick Downey, dropping them in with a newly developed hook shot, along with Dick Flagg, who maintained complete command of the backboards, led the Nashua scoring attack. Mills finished with 23, Downey with 16 and Flagg with 12.”

FEB. 17, 2017 – “Hudson’s Chris Zuccaro had a wrap-around goal and two assists in Plymouth State’s recent 4-0 win over Salem State. The Panthers are now 16-5-2 overall, 13-1-1 in MASCAC play. Zuccaro, a junior, has been a big part of that success, with seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points, fourth on the team in points.”
