Time Travel for July 3-4
Alan Greenwood
JULY 2, 1956 – ìGeorge Tebbetts tossed a four-hitter at the Red Sox to give the Atoms a 7-0 win in SaturdayÃs Nashua Little League game. During his performance Tebbetts didnÃt walk a single man and he fanned nine.î
Forgive the following nugget of sarcasm:
Tebbetts didnÃt walk a single man. Since this is Little League, it can be reasonably assumed that Tebbetts also didnÃt walk a married man, either.
JULY 3, 1971 – ìThe Hollis Summer Basketball League All Stars dropped a close contest last night in Hollis to the Milford Spartans, 54-50.
ìJim Cannaday sank two free throws with two seconds left in regulation time to tie it at 47-47 and send it into overtime.î
JULY 4, 2018 – ìSolid pitching and just enough timely hitting lifted the Worcester Bravehearts over the Nashua Silver Knights on Wednesday, 5-1.
ìNashua managed just three hits off a pair of Worcester pitchers. Ã- Cody Morissette’s home run to lead off the seventh inning produced Nashua’s only run.î
JULY 5, 1991 – ìPhil Greenwood ran most of his race Thursday with a police escort by his side to protect him along the way. But if he keeps running the way he has been that police escort is going to be replaced by an agent.
ìGreenwood, who won the 3,200 meters in this yearÃs Meet of Champions, the Nashua High School sophomore turned a close race into a shambles after only about two miles yesterday to win the Nashua Fourth of July Road Race with a time of 39 minutes, 58.4 seconds. Jeff Smith, Merrimack High School ace, finished second in 41:36.5.î
Anyone who has seen the sports-writing Greenwood run understands that he and Phil are not related.
JULY 6, 2001 – ìThe A’s defeated the Pirates, 3-2 in the middle game of a three-game series in the Nashua City Tournament at the North Common Field on Thursday.
ìJoe Rousseau went all seven innings for the win while Corey Walker picked up the loss. Brendan Sullivan provided the offense for the A’s with two RBI singles.î
JULY 7, 2006 – ìBrian Saari went 4-for-4 with two doubles and six runs batted in to lead Hollis-Brookline to a 17-9 win over the Nashua Marauders in a Senior Babe Ruth game at Holman Stadium on Thursday night. The teams combined for 32 hits in the slugfest as Hollis-Brookline improved to 9-6 while the Marauders slipped to 11-5.
ìNate Doty went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and scored three runs while Mike Gauthier, who earned the win on the mound, was 3 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
ìFor the Marauders, Mark Morency was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Jason Fitz was 4 for 4 with an RBI.î
JULY 8, 2012 – ìItÃs Travis TerrillÃs time. The former Alvirne High School pitching standout has done whatever the Nashua Silver Knights have asked of him the last couple of years – whether it be a spot start or in relief.
ìNow his patience is being rewarded as the team has made him part of its six-man rotation.
ìItÃs good to get a shot,î Terrill said. ìI wanted to limit myself innings-wise a little bit this summer because I pitched a lot for Merrimack in the spring. But itÃs definitely good to get a start. … ItÃs definitely what I want to do.î
