Prowling the newspaper’s archives to find these nostalgic nuggets is apt to unearth some that simply command inclusion.

In at least one man’s mind, any item that includes Togo Palazzi and the Syracuse Nationals cannot be ignored.

APRIL 10, 1971: “Former All-American basketball player in both high school and at Holy Cross College, Togo Palazzi, will be the guest speaker at the 15th annual Elks-Park Recreation Boys Biddy Basketball League dinner for the North League at the Nashua High School cafetorium on Wednesday, April 14.

“Palazzi is a former professional basketball player, having played with the Boston Celtics and the Syracuse Nationals and still holds the record for most points in one period, 23.”

And you thought that Holy Cross’ contribution to the Celtics was limited to Bob Cousy and Tommy Heinsohn.

And for those who don’t recall, the Syracuse Nationals became the Philadelphia 76ers in 1963. The Nationals were the last remnant of the NBA’s small-city heyday, featuring the Fort Wayne Pistons, Rochester Royals and Tri-City Blackhawks.

APRIL 11, 1981: “Nashua Senior High’s three rookie girls tennis players led the Panthers to an 8-1win over Alvirne High School on Friday at the Panthers’ courts.

“Beth LaPlante, Sally Cabral and Geeta Khare, the last three players in the Nashua singles lineup, surrendered just one game between them while winning all three matches. Cabral and Khare posted 8-0 wins and LaPlante beat Lucy Ryan 8-1.”

APRIL 12, 1986: “It was a typical rally by the Bishop Guertin High School baseball team. Two walks, a double steal and a wild throw produced the first run and before the bottom of the first inning was over the Cardinals used two more walks, two more errors and singles by Chris Flint and Ron Thibeault to score four additional runs.

“And combined with the five-hit pitching of Walter Wrobleski, BG went on to beat Trinity High School of Manchester on Friday, 9-4.”

APRIL 13, 2001: “The new track in Merrimack was tested in the rain on Thursday, as the Tomahawk boys easily topped both Manchester West and Alvirne, while the girls beat Alvirne and lost to West in a Class L tri-meet. Eric Levy and Chris Kilger each had a pair of wins for the Merrimack boys, while Andrea Brooks and Tina Forbes had strong performances in the sprints for the Merrimack girls.

“Michelle Leduc swept the distance events for Alvirne.”

APRIL 14, 2006: “Joey Giarrusso scored 10 points (six goals, four assists) to lead Souhegan (2-0) to a 19-2 beating of Nashua High School North in a Division I game at Stellos Stadium.

“Dan O’Brien (one goal, two assists), Alex Lane (two goals), Sean Jellison (two goals, two assists), Tommy McLaurin (three goals, two assists), Nick Wilson (two goals), Richie Reddy (three goals), Brendan Julien (two assists) and Ryan Clark (two assists) all had multiple points for the Sabers, while Tom Campbell made nine saves in net.”

APRIL 15, 2011: “Jared Maloney shut out the Broncos (0-2), 6-0, with a complete-game two hitter, walking none and striking out five. The Panthers (1-1) broke the game open in the seventh inning, with a Nick Reed leadoff triple followed by two walks, a two-run single by Jim Buckley, and a run-scoring single by Frank Guarino. Buckley had two hits and three RBIs and Reed had doubled earlier in the game for the Panthers (1-1).”

APRIL 16, 2016: “Tyler Rohr smacked a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning to lift Merrimack (2-0) to 13-11 victory over Spaulding on Friday.

Merrimack scored eight in the top of the sixth to claim an 11-5 lead, but Spaulding roared back with six runs in the bottom half to force extras.

“Alex Thornton led the ‘Hawks with three hits, while Justin Grassini (three RBIs), Chad Seaver (two RBIs), Rohr (two RBIs), Ryan Slate (RBI) and Justin Cardenas (RBI) each collected a pair of hits.”
