DEC. 5, 1960: “Behind the 34-point effort of Jim Nute, the Hudson AA successfully opened its season yesterday by downing Hampton,92-75, at the Dr. H.O Smith gym in Hudson.

“Ed Janauskas contributed 20 points to the cause as the winners jumped to a 20-13 first-period advantage and maintained the lead from there.”

DEC 6, 1955: “Mike Holovak, coach of the Boston College football team, was the main speaker at the annual Nashua Rotary Club football luncheon, honoring members of the local grid squad, yesterday noon at the Country Club.

“Other invited guests were members of the NHS cheerleading squad and its coach, Miss Alice Bennett. Seated at the head table were team co-captains John Wardner and Charles Parker, principal Edmund M. Keefe, coaches Charles Harvey and Tony Marandos, Judge Bolic A. Degasis, Superintendent of Schools H. Raymond Danforth, and faculty manager Leonard S. Paquette.”

DEC. 7, 1945: “Nashua will have a junior edition of the Royal Purple grid cohorts next year, according to word from school board members who plan to field a Junior High eleven, completely equipped to face a full schedule under the direction of a capable paid coach.

“Talked about for some time, the Junior High eleven will be in effect a ‘farm team’ from which the junior boys will graduate to the Senior High School eleven.”

DEC. 8, 1965: “The Nashua Telegraph announced its All State Football Team, with Manchester Memorial and Nashua High grabbing eight of the 11 spots. Representing the Gate City on the squad were Mark Russell, Jerry Anctil, George Panagoulias and Andy Sardonis.”

DEC. 9, 1975: “The Milford High basketball team continued to experience big problems last night and dropped a 44-39 decision to Exeter High.

“Bob Gartland, the only experienced member of this year’s Milford squad, scored 14 points in leading his team. Co-captain Mark Thomas added 11 points.”

DEC. 10, 1980: “The name is Gates. G-A-T-E-S. Basketball fans might as well get used to it because you’re going to hear a lot more of it before the year is out. A LOT more!

“Last night, NHS’ talented 6-9 senior whistled in 27 points in leading Nashua High to an impressive 60-39 win over a gritty Alvirne club.

“And that wasn’t even the impressive part of Farley Gates’ performance. What was exceptional about the NHS captain’s game was his much-improved defense.”

DEC. 11, 2010: “The Bishop Guertin girls basketball team got a big defensive play late from Jenny Fallon and freshman Jamie Sherburne’s layup with 14 seconds remaining gave the Cardinals a season-opening 36-33 win over Merrimack in the season opener for both teams Friday.”
