Be sure to wish Pat Patriot a happy birthday!
APRIL 19, 1960 – “The Boston Patriots decided Patriots Day is an appropriate to announce their emblem and new
headquarters.
“Accordingly, the local entry of the infant American Football League today made public the club symbol drawn by Phil Bissell of the Boston Globe.
“The cartoon depicts an angry looking soldier, dressed in the uniform of the Continental Army, taking the position of a football center with one hand on the ball.
“The team offices are open at 530 Commonwealth Ave. The phone number – Congress 2-1776.”
Pat looked even angrier after being replaced by the Flying Elvis.
APRIL 19, 1965 – “Bishop Guertin High School athletic officials have been notified by the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association that the school has been awarded in two sports for the 1965-66 season.
“This fall, BGHS will join the Division II ranks in football and next winter the Cardinals will become a member of the Class I (Intermediate) basketball division.
“As for this year’s baseball season, the school will operate on the Jayvee level with its two classes – freshmen and sophomore.”
APRIL 19, 1975 – “Christine Hogan, 14, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Hogan of 24 Deerhaven Drive, placed second nationally in the 200-yard butterfly event Thursday during the National YMCA Swim Championships.
“Christine, one of five Nashua Y swimmers to make the trip to Florida, was fifth after qualifying rounds. In the finals, however, she came up with an excellent 2:10.1 time, good enough for second place in the butterfly according to coach Ray Raudonis. The team is also coached by Peter Plante.”
Other New Hampshire swimmers included Becky Brooks of Nashua, John Montesi of Hollis, Fred Ludvigsen of Amherst and Robin Harr of Dover.
APRIL 19, 1980 – “A four-run second inning propelled Alvirne’s softball team to a 5-1 win over Winnacunnet yesterday for its second win in five tries.
“Debbie Cobb began the decisive rally by drawing a base on balls and stealing second. Missy Coate, who had a pair of hits, doubled her home and trotted across the plate herself with what proved to be the winning run on a Kari Turcogeorge single.”
APRIL 19, 1985 – “Just call them the Comeback Kids. The unbeaten Nashua softball team, fresh off a rally vs. Manchester Memorial the other day, did it again yesterday with a 4-3, nine-inning win over Keene.
“The Panthers trailed 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth before they evened things up on two Keene errors and a run-scoring single by Paula Philbrook.
“Keene grabbed the lead again in the top of the eighth on two Panther errors, but an RBI single by Mary Kobbs sent the game into the ninth for Nashua. In that deciding frame, the Panthers’ Cindy Bourgeault reached on an error and later scored the game winner on the fifth Blackbird error after a bunt by Ann Holloran.”
