Nashua Dodgers 11U dominate Labor Day tournament

The 11U Nashua Jr. Dodgers were undefeated (5-0-1) in the first annual Labor Day Slugfest hosted by the Greater Nashua Prospects recently.

They defeated Team Maplewood from Fall River, Mass., 9-4 in the tourney’s championship game. The contest featured four home runs with each team hitting two, including a dramatic two out grand slam from the Dodgers ‘ Nolan Mederos in the bottom of the fifth inning to seal the victory.

The Dodgers were also led by the dominating relief pitching of Albert De la Rosa, who also homered, and Caleb Rich, who drove in the winning run with a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth to score pinch runner Nick Digesse.

The Dodgers offense was on fire throughout the tourney, scoring a combined 66 runs in their six games. Overall they slugged eight home runs, led by De La Rosa’s five, while Colin Holbrook, Ryan Bourgeois and Nolan Mederos had one each. The tablesetting duo of Ian Deluca and Abi Gonzalez were on base constantly, with several stolen bases and scoring 20 runs between them.

Dodger pitchers held their opponents to just 26 runs in the six games. Hurlers Elias Bourque, Devin Sawyer, Mederos, De La Rosa and Holbrook pitched well. Dodger pitchers recording 95 of 105 outs either by strikeout or infield plays.

First baseman Sean Sullivan was a defensive standout as was outfielder Nathan Smith, who threw out one batter at first base on a potential RBI single.

The Dodgers are managed by Ken Kozyra, with assistants Gary Smith, Dan Mederos and Bob Bourgeois.

Nashua Fall Babe Ruth

The Nashua Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a fall Babe Ruth baseball program currently underway.

All current Babe Ruth League players age 13 and 14 are eligible to play. New this year, any 12 year old moving up to Babe Ruth next spring can now play.

There will be practices during the week and games on the weekend. The cost is $20. Registration forms are available on line at gonashua.com or in the Parks and Recreation office in Greeley Park on 100 Concord St.

Hockey

Cavaliers Mini Mite program

The Southern New Hamspshire Cavaliers will have a Mini Mite limited travel hockey program for boys and girls ages 5-8 years old.

There are two 12-week sessions, or youths may register for the full year.

Cavs accepting players

The Southern New Hampshire Cavaliers are now accepting players at the Mites, Squirts and Bantam levels. The teams will have two practices per week, and 35 games during the season.

Cheerleading

HB Jr. Cavs will cheer
at Old Home Days

The Hollis Brookline Jr. Cavaliers Cheerleading teams will be participating in the Hollis Old Home Days celebration on Sept. 16-17.

The teams will march in the Saturday morning parade and also hand out free glow stick neclaces at the HBJC booth, where food, drinks, apparel and sticks may also be purchased.

Proceeds will go to support the HB Jr. Cavs organization.
