Nashua floor hockey tops Salem for championship

The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nashua’s Pride floor hockey team downed Salem 5-3 to win the championship in the inaugural season of the Merrimack Valley Youth Floor Hockey League.

Nashua got an early lead thanks to a goal by captain Jake Lopes (Thomas Murray assist), but Salem responded by scoring the next two goals.

Nashua had a strong second period with a goal from Christian DeGregorio (Lopes assist) and a second one by Lopes (unassisted).

DiGregorio tallied his second goal later in the second period with Lopes getting his second assist and fourth point of the night.

The clincher came with about four minutes remaining in the third period on Patrick Melanson’s rebound goal off an initial shot by Logan Larrea.

Nashua had a strong performance in net from Dylan Purdy. Playing well defensively in front of him were Chris Zero, Tyler Murray and Conner Rowsell.

Nashua is coached by Michael Curtin with Mitchell Williams filling the role of teen assistant coach.

BASKETBALL

BIDDY BASKETBALL

Nuggets 11, Stars 10 (2 OT)

The Stars’ Nico Frioni led the defensive play in a tough loss to the Nuggets. The Stars’ scorers were Nicholas Sanossian (three points), Jake Homsy (two points), Sebastian Laleau (two) and David Taylor (two).

Nuggets 17, Jazz 6

The Jazz’ Owen Merrill, Jake Roehm and Tyler Nesbittall scored two points each. Ethan Finamore had four points for the Nuggets, while Joshua Mathson and Nicholas Sanossian added two apiece.

Cavaliers 36, Bullets 29

The Cavaliers’ Josh Lentz led all scorers with 18 points and was also the leading rebounder. Also contributing offensively were Brandon Metivier, Alan Small, Travis and Collin Holbrook, Rishi Patel, Nathan Brodeau and Nathan Smith.

The Bullets were led by Charlie Collins’ eight points, while Issac Zhang scored six.

Also contributing were Nick Dahl, Adrian Cruz, Oscar Trujillo, Jayden Tempro, Sean Quilan and Manav and Keval Botadra.

Cavaliers 46, Pistons 22

Lentz led all scorers with 19 points. Also contributing for the Cavs were Adeen Ahmed with eight, and TJ Klein, Risi Patel and Cam Miele with four apiece. Holbrook, Metivier and Jacob Soucie also scored. Nathan Brodeur stood out defensively.

CYO BASKETBALL

St. Chris Boys Mites 23, St. Pat’s 14

The St. Chris fifth and sixth graders are now 2-0 after a strong defensive effort gave them a comeback win.

Trevor Labrecque led all scores with nine points, while Bobby Canaway added six and Danny Klevisha scored four. Peter Wilson and Chris Prangley had two apiece. Sammy Kouchalakos contributed with three steals on the defensive end.

St. Pat’s 30, St. Chris Jr. Mites 22

The St. Chris third and fourth grade team was led by Ebuka Okori with 15 points in its opener.

Johnny Canaway added three and Brayden Labrecque and Connor Lennon had two points each.

St. Chris Girls Mites 23, St. Thomas 17

St. Chris is now 2-0 after Meghan Stack led the way with seven points. Ava Soucy and Kelechi Okorie followed with six points and Julia Gadbois and Cameron Ioquinta each contributed two.

2016 Cal Ripken registration open

Registration is now open for the 2016 Nashua Cal Ripken spring baseball season at www.nashuacalripken.org.

Any child living in Nashua aged 4 to 12 is eligible to play.

The registration fee is $40 for T-Ball, Rookies and Minors (ages 4-8) while AAA & Majors (9 to 12) is $50 with a family cap of $75. There is a discount to register prior to Jan. 15.

Merrimack cheerleaders seeking donations

The Merrimack Cardinal Junior Midget Pop Warner cheerleaders recently won the New England Regional Championship and have advanced to the national competition in Orlando, Fla.

Special event

Nashua Park-Rec trip to Bruins-Senators game

There are a limited number of tickets available for the Nashua Park-Recreation Department-sponsored trip to the Dec. 29, Boston Bruins-Ottawa Senators game at the TD Garden at 7 p.m.

The cost is $135 per person and includes a coach bus ride. The bus will leave Greeley Park at 4 p.m.

All seats are in the balcony section 326.

All public trips require a $30 non-refundable deposit per person.
