Souhegan hammers Trinity, 41-21

By Staff | Oct 17, 2015

AMHERST – Trinity used just about out every trick in the book against Souhegan Friday night. In the first half alone, a fake punt, three onside kicks and a hook-and-ladder were all on display.

The aggressiveness and all the trickery an offensive coordinator could dream up still couldn’t stop Souhegan though, as the Sabers used a dominant second half to beat the Pioneers, 41-21.

Souhegan’s defense was strong out of the gate. On Trinity’s first possession, an Aaron Stonebraker sack helped the Sabers force a fourth-and-34 for the Pioneers from their own 9. The ensuing good field position would set up a five-play, 22-yard Souhegan scoring drive, capped by a 2-yard run from Jonathan Nogueira.

The 7-0 lead would not last long. A 23-yard run on a fake punt was the key play on the Pioneers drive that gave Trinity the 8-7 lead.

The back-and-forth scoring continued with a 1-yard touchdown run by Sabers running back Cameron Kinney at the start of the second half. Pioneer standout Nick Perdue matched the score with a 2-yard touchdown of his own on the ensuing Trinity drive.

The game really got exciting as the opening half came to a close. Facing a fourth down from the opposing 31, Sabers quarterback Michael Mancini connected with fellow senior Zachary Bossi, who outran the defense to paydirt with just 33 seconds left in the half.

It appeared the Sabers would take a 21-14 lead into half, but the creative Pioneers perfectly executed a hook-and-ladder play on first down. After catching a pass, a Trinity receiver pitched the ball to his teammate who took it in for a 53-yard score.

What was a 21-21 halftime score turned into a comfortable Souhegan victory.

Mancini led the Sabres down the field by consistently finding open receivers with room to run. The big plays set up second-half touchdown runs by Brendan Cray, Nogueira and Cameron Kinney.
