Undefeated Nashua Blast U13A wins NHYLA title

By Staff | Jun 21, 2015

The Nashua Blast U13A girls lacrosse team finished off an undefeated season with two wins in the Londonderry Tournament to clinch the NHYLA State Championship.

Led by the play of Taylor Guilfoil, Nashua finished 8-0 in the regular season, closing that out with an 8-5 win over Exeter at Stellos Stadium.

The Blast entered the NHYLA Tournament as the top seed, which gave them the nod for the finals after a 6-6 overtime tie with fourth-seeded Hampstead. Nashua led 4-1 at one point before settling for the tie. Scoring for the Blast were Julia Cote (four goals) and Kirsten McIntire (two). Payson Mooso had six saves in net.

Nashua then beat Amherst 6-4 in the finals. Early on, the wall of Bailey Morin (two offensive charges), Liv Hlebichuk (two ground balls), Theresa Ellison (one interception), Olivia Kingston (one ground ball), Elinor Addonizio and Madison Sewade carried the play. Nashua jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead off of goals by Cote and Sarah Signorello.

Midfielders Britney Pearson (two ground balls), Emily Morneau (one draw control), Grace Bellavance, Amelia Piercy (two ground balls), Kiley O’Brien (one draw control) and Lindsay Hult (two draw controls) then took over.

Hult won five of 10 possessions. Kaylie Keegan also played well, while Julia Mendes did an excellent job of cutting and freeing up her teammates for makeable shots.

After Amherst cut Nashua’s lead to two, the Blast got goals from Hult and Signorello to clinch the win. Amherst was able to slide two more goals past Nashua’s goalie, but Mooso had eight more saves to secure the win.

The next few innings were a pitching duel with Devin Sawyer, Jason Pecoraro, and Saul Ulloa striking out several batters.

The Pirates tied the game 3-3 in the top of the fourth, but the Astros answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth. The first run resulted from a walk and passed balls. Pecoraro hit a two-run single for insurance runs and the 6-3 lead.
