Nashua Blast U-13 lacrosse team opens with win

The Nashua Blast Girls U-13 Purple team rallied from an early two-goal deficit to top Amherst, 6-4, in the recent season opener at Stellos Stadium.

Goalie Payson Mooso was outstanding in goal with eight saves, including three on penalty shots late in the game.

Kaylie Keegan was the first to break the ice for Nashua on a goal off a beautiful pass from Julia Cote. Kirsten McIntire scored unassisted on a roll from behind the net to tie the game at 2-2.

Sarah Signorello then set up McIntire on a beautiful draw and dump for her second goal of the game to end the half tied at 3-3.

Emily Morneau came out hot in the second half scoring on a beautifully placed free position shot. Shortly after, Signorello made another great pass to McIntire, who scored to make it 5-4 Nashua.

Julia Cote scored an unassisted breakaway goal to account for the final.

The Nashua defense played well, holding Amherst to a single goal in the second half. Bailey Morin (three interceptions), Theresa Ellison, Liv Hlebichuck and Olivia Kingston played well, causing numerous turnovers.

Julia Mendes, Elinor Addonizio and Madison Sewade also played well defensively, while midfielders Britney Pearson, Lindsey Hult, Grace Bellavance, Amelia Piercy and Kiley O’Brien were strong. Nashua is scheduled to face Seacoast in Portsmouth next.

Merrimack wrestling

Merrimack Youth Wrestling Association sixth grader Aiden Hanning put an exclamation point on his youth wrestling career by winning four straight matches, two by pin, on his way to a Junior Division championship at the recently held 13th annual Gene Mills Eastern Nationals in Syracuse, N.Y.

Nearly 1,000 wrestlers from as far south as Florida competed. Hanning won the gold by a 2-1 margin over his opponent, a New York state champion. He is the first MYA wrestler, according to program director Gary Krupp, to go all the way in the program from kindergarten age through sixth grade.

Hanning’s MYA season record was 25-6 with tournament finishes that include four championships, two silver medals, and one bronze.

Beyond the MYA, Hanning practices in Nashua with the Gate City Wrestling Club and the Nashua Boys & Girls Club, and in Lowell, Mass., at the Doughboys Wrestling Club. He amassed an impressive 38-12 non-MYA record while collecting another three gold medals and one silver.

MYA Executive Board elections

The Merrimack Youth Association (MYA) will be having elections for positions on the MYA Executive Board on May 14 at the MYA Building.

The Nominating Committee is now accepting names for two-year terms for president, treasurer, secretary, and member at large. To place a name in nomination, contact committee chairperson, Gary Krupp at 424-3732. All volunteers and parents of an MYA participant are eligible to vote in this election. All are welcome to attend the MYA monthly meetings on the second Thursday of every month in the MYA building.

Merrimack Youth Baseball Board Positions

Merrimack Youth Baseball is looking to fill the following board positions for the upcoming season: Treasurer, financial secretary and equipment manager.

Nashua Baseball Academy camp

The Nashua Baseball Academy will hold a vacation baseball camp from April 27 through May 1 from 9 a.m.to noon each day, rain or shine, at the indoor/outdoor facility at 265 Proctor Hill Road in Hollis.

The camp will focus on player development,skills training and will feature games and competitions. The fee is $125 and athletes can come selected days for a pro-rated fee.

New Hampshire Knights tryouts

The New Hampshire Knights baseball program is holding tryouts for the summer season for ;players ages 15-19 (determined May 1).

Tryouts are at Academy Field on Wednesday nights at 265 Proctor Hill Road in Hollis for the next several Wednesdays.

The team is made up of varsity athletes from southern New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts and plays its home games at Academy Field in Hollis.

The season will run from mid-June to early August with 22 regular season games and a playoff tournament.

The Knights were established in 2006, compete in the New England Independent Baseball League and finished second last year and were state champions the two previous seasons.

Nashua Chiefs tryouts

The Nashua Parks Recreation Department will be sponsoring the Chiefs baseball team in the NEIBL Baseball League, for ages 15-19. Tryouts will be held on May 9-10 at the Ledge St. Field (in front of the Boys & Girls Club) starting at 10 a.m. Players will register at the field prior to tryouts at 9:30 a.m. No pre-registration is required.

It is strongly recommended that players attend both tryout sessions. This league is for players who are between freshman in high school to freshman in college.

Games begin in June and go through end of July. Games are played throughout southern New Hampshire, northern Massachusetts, and up to Concord.

Greater Nashua Little League

Spring registration for Greater Nashua Little League is now open for youths ages 5-13.

Those ages 5-8 should register by April 15 by going to nashuall.nashualittleleague.org

The season dates are as follows: Minors/Majors April 1-June 30 and T-Ball/Farm May 1-June 30. Age requirements for those leagues are boys and girls ages 5-12

(as of April 30). The registration fee is $40 per child (maximum of $90 per family).

Nashua Cal Ripken registration

Those interested in playing Nashua Cal Ripken baseball this spring can currently register on line at nashuacalripken.org. Tryout information will be soon be posted on the site.

HBJC Football and Cheer registration

The Hollis Brookline Junior Cavaliers Football and Cheer Program registration is open for the 2015 season.

Onsite registrations will be held at the Brookline Fire Department back room from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on May 2 and June 6.

Prior to on site registering, applicants will need to register on the NHYFSC site (nhyfcs.org), print out required forms and bring them to registration.

Windham wrestling camp

The Windham High School wrestling staff will host a four-day youth wrestling camp June 22-25 from 3-6 p.m. for students entering grades K-9 (pre-K wrestlers also welcome at parent/coach discretion).

Designed for all levels of experience, the camp will focus on wrestling skills as well as sportsmanship, teamwork, nutrition, and proper training methods

Campers will receive personal tips, personal letters home, and other gifts from their counselors. Members of the Windham High School wrestling team will be on hand.

The cost of camp is $100 per wrestler, and additional siblings are only $25 each.

Hudson Girls Softball League

The Hudson Girls Softball League is now accepting player registration for the upcoming softball season. The league is open to all girls in the surrounding towns, and registration is available online HGSL.ORG

The 6U (six-and-under) 8U, and 10U divisions will not have tryouts as everyone will be put on a team. For more information go to the HGSL website, HGSL.ORG

Nashua Youth Soccer League registration

The Nashua Youth Soccer League registrations received now may be put on a waiting list. The league is open to boys and girls in Nashua and surrounding towns born between Oct. 1, 1995 and Sept. 30, 2009.

Umass Lowell girls soccer clinic

The UMass Lowell women’s soccer coaching staff and players will hold a one day clinic for girls in grades nine through 12 on Sunday, May 17, from noon-4 p.m. at the turf field at the Cushing Field Complex.

The registration fee is $100 and is refundable in the case of inclement weather or if the camp is cancelled.

Football league accepting new members

The Northeast Junior High Football League (NJHFL) is currently accepting new members for the 2015 season.

The NJHFL offers three distinct levels of football and cheerleading for those athletes in grades 2-8. The league also holds its own cheer competition that is open both to league members and non-members.

The NJHFL has 13 organizations, representing 29 teams from southern New Hampshire and northeastern Massachusetts. Currently, more than 900 players and close to 700 cheerleaders participate in the league annually. For more information or league contact info, please visit northeastjhfl.com

NH Knights openings

The New Hampshire Knights have openings on their 13U AAU team. Ages are determined on May 1. Last year this team finished third overall in the New England Regionals. Openings are for serious players only. Tryouts are by appointment. Contact Coach Loftus at nashuabaseballacademy@comcast.net.

NH Grizzlies openings

The New Hampshire Grizzlies U14 baseball team has a few openings left for the 2015 season. This is a full-year program with winter workouts. John Roper pitching lessons

The John Roper Pitching School, run by the former Major Leaguer and Nashua Pride hurler, has openings for private and semi-private pitching lessons. Pitching classes include pitchers fielding practice, pick-off moves, covering bunts etc. There is a maximum of 10 students per class.
