The Cavaliers finished the Nashua Biddy Boys Basketball season undefeated at 20-0 with a 52-23 win over the 19-1 Saints for the city championship.

The Cavs opened the first quarter with a 16-6 lead, were up at halftime 28-12 and were coasting at 46-19 by the end of the third period.

The winners were led by Josh Lentz, who had 12 points, followed by eight each by Mason Matylewski and Gavin Belesca.

The Cavaliers had 11 players score, and their starters held opponents in 17 of the 20 games to a total of 74 points in the first quarter. Seven teams were able to score only two or less during that stretch. They never trailed in any game.

The team roster included Rishi Patel, T.J. Klein, Miles Rios, Brandon Metivier, Nathan Brodeur, Travis and Colin Holbrook, Josh Lentz, Cam Miele, Gavin Belesca, Stav Alkalay ,Jacob Soucie, Patrick Jackson and Mason Matylewski, The Cavs were coached by Darrel Barlow, Brian Lefebvre and Chris Lentz.

Merrimack wrestlers solid at Rebel Classic

The Merrimack Youth Wrestling Program had two wrestlers earn first place finishes in the kindergarten through eighth grade New England Rebel Classic Wrestling Tournament held at Pinkerton Academy recently.

The tournament was a Gene Mills Eastern Nationals qualifying event, drawing top teams from New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts.

Local individual results were as follows:

Team leader Aiden Hanning capped his stellar season by pinning two opponents and winning a decision against the third en route to a first place crown.

First grade standout Cayden Dine also took home the gold. He won a major decision against his first opponent, pinned his second and then bested his Tyngsborough, Mass. foe in a thrilling championship final. Dine threw a five-point move in the waning seconds to win the match by four points

Kindergartners Collin Schuster and Kael McAloon took home third and fourth place medals, respectively. Other competitors included Jackson Meehan, Ivey Johnson, Owen Forrest, Mitchell Krupp, and Anson Dewar.

Fairgrounds second in state cheering

The Fairgrounds Milddle School cheer team came in second at the recent State Cheering Championships at Nashua High School South despite having to change its routine shortly before the competition due to injury.

The team also captured a recent competion at Nashua High School North and second at an event at Bishop Guertin.

Members of the team include Hailey Boisvert, Catherine Covert, Julia Gobbi, Jadyn Grazioli, Alyss-ann Johnson, Jenessa Keyza, Alexa Lucas, Caitlyn Olsen, Bryanna Pelletier, Samantha Petrilio, Makenzie Raisanen, Amaya Rivera, Olivia Rockwell, Hailey Ronan, Mackenzie Sawyer, Sara Signorello, Kylie Vermette, Lia Whitesel and Sarah Widtfeldt.

Nashua softball

The Nashua Parks and Recreation Department is now accepting player registration forms for the upcoming softball season. Registration forms will be available in mid-March at the following locations: main offices of all Nashua public and private schools; Jeannotte’s Market; Bright Spot Convenience Store; Nashua Public Library; and the City Clerks Office at City Hall. Forms are available now at the Recreation Office at Greeley Park and online at www.gonashua.com.

The age divisions, based on player’s league age as of Jan. 1, 2015, and tryout dates are as follows:

Ages 7-8 will be part of the Rookie League. Players register with no tryouts and are assigned to a team.

Ages 9-12 will make up the Junior League, which is merging from two league – American and National – to one league. Players can register and tryout in one of two 6 p.m. sessions at Roby Park – 9 and 10 year olds April 7, and 11 and 12 year olds April 9 (makeup/rain date for all 9-12 year olds is 6 p.m. April 10, at Roby Park). Any 9 year old not making a Junior team will be assigned to a Rookie team. All returning Junior League players do not need to register or tryout, they return to their old Junior teams. Only new players need to register and tryout.

Ages 13-16 play in the Senior League. All 13 year olds and new players need to register and tryout at 6 p.m. April 14, at Roby Park (makeup/rain date is 6 p.m. April 16, at Roby Park). All returning players stay with their old team.

Nashua Babe Ruth

All Ray Oban players last year must re-register and tryout for Babe Ruth again this year. There is a high probability that there will be no Ray Oban League this year due to declining numbers. Deadline for registering is April 8.

Any new players to Nashua that are age 14 and 15 need to register and tryout at the dates listed below. All returning players are asked to fill out a registration form before the season starts.

Tryout dates are as follows (Subject to change depending on field conditions with snow): all 13 year olds at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 11, at Ledge Street Field; and 14 and 15 year olds at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 12, at Ledge Street Field.

MacMulkin sponsors Nashua Little League

MacMulkin Chevrolet Cadillac is sponsoring the Greater Nashua Little League this season through the Chevy Youth Baseball Program. This sponsorship will include both monetary and equipment donations.

Over the course of the season, MacMulkin will donate equipment to the league such as equipment bags, baseballs, softballs, catcher’s gear, batting helmets, ball buckets, umpire’s equipment, coach’s kits, break away bases, bat racks, batting tees and
first-aid kits. MacMulkin will also help participants attend clinics with local professional teams.

The 2015 program will provide assistance to approximately 300 organizations in the Northeastern region.

Little League registration

Spring registration for Greater Nashua Little League is now open for youths ages 5-13.

The season dates are as follows:

New this season is a boy/girl 13-year-old division, for those who are 13 as of April 30). There is limited space.

HBJC football, cheer

The Hollis Brookline Junior Cavaliers Football and Cheer Program registration is open for the 2015 season.

On site registrations will be held at the Brookline Fire Department back room from 10 a.m.-noon on March 29, May 2 and June 6.

Prior to onsite registering, applicants will need to register on the NHYFSC site (nhyfcs.org), print out required forms and bring them to registration.

Hudson softball

The Hudson Girls Softball League (HGSL) is now accepting player registration for the upcoming softball season. The league is open to all girls in the surrounding towns, and registration is available online HGSL.ORG

The age divisions based on player’s league age as of Jan. 1, 2015, and the tryout date is Apr. 4 at the Tabernacle Church on Rte. 102 in Litchfield.

The 6U (six-and-under) 8U, and 10U divisions will not have tryouts as everyone will be put on a team. Tryouts for the other age divisions are as follows: 12U, 8:30-10 a.m.; 14U, 10-11:30a.m.; 18U 11:30 a.m.-noon.

Nashua soccer

The Nashua Youth Soccer League registrations received now may be wait listed. The league is open to boys and girls in Nashua and surrounding towns born between Oct. 1, 1995 and Sept. 30, 2009.

UMass Lowell girls soccer clinic

The UMass Lowell women’s soccer coaching staff and players will hold a one day clinic for girls in grades nine through 12 on Sunday, May 17 from noon to 4 p.m. at the turf field at the Cushing Field Complex.

The registration fee is $100 and is refundable in the case of inclement weather or if the camp is cancelled.

Junior high football league registration

The Northeast Junior High Football League (NJHFL) is currently accepting new members for the 2015 season.

The NJHFL offers three distinct levels of football and cheerleading for those athletes in grades two through eight. The league also holds its own cheer competition that is open both to league members and non-members.

The NJHFL has 13 organizations, representing 29 teams from southern New Hampshire and northeastern Massachusetts. Currently, over 900 players and close to 700 cheerleaders participate in the league annually. The New Hampshire Knights have openings on their 13U AAU team. Ages are determined on May 1st 2015. Last year this team finished third overall in the New England Regionals.
