Stars defeat Jets for Nashua Junior Biddy basketball crown

The Stars captured the city championship with a first half flurry and then held on to top the Jets, 31-23 in the Nashua Junior Biddy championship game.

Members of the champion Stars, coached by Brian Sullivan, included Camden Burgess, Ashton Carroll, Christian Divernieri, Javari Ellison, Eddie Gaffney, Nate Hill, Karsten Lemire, Javante Lopez, James Pomeranz, Elijah Rodriguez, and Jack Sullivan.

Members of the runnerup Jets, coached by Matt Johnson, were: Zachary Castonguay, Alex Johnson, Daniel Guarente, Derek Finlay, Askin Sivaprakash, Carter Gauthier, Daniyal Soharwadi, Gavin Theriault, Nithin Kalidindi, Brady Sullivan, and Kevin McMenimen.

Elks Hoop Shoot regionals next Saturday

Two nine-year-pld Nashua Elks/New Hampshire State Elks Hoop Shoot Champions, Ryan Haskill and Morgan Gilis will be among 36 boy and girl state champions, who will be competing in the New England Regional Hoop Shoot in Portland, Maine, on Saturday March 28 at 9 a.m.

The event, which is open to the public, is being held at Scarborough High School and is one of 12 being held around the country to determine 72 national finalists.

Nine years ago, the Greater Nashua Elks enjoyed their first National Hoop Shoot Champion when then 12-year old Caleb Donnelly of Hudson won the 12-13 Boys Division and was crowned as National Champion. Donnelly was playing in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament this past week for Northeastern University.

Each contest consists of 25 free throws. Over one million boys and girls have competed in this year’s program. The six regional winners from the Maine competition will have a chance to stake their claim to one of six spots on the Elks “Hoop Shoot” plaque in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. when the national finals take place there next month.

There will be an awards banquet to follow the event Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Wyndham Portland Airport Hotel.

Nashua softball registration

The Nashua Parks and Recreation Dept. is now accepting player registration forms for the upcoming softball season. Registration forms will be available in mid-March at the following locations: Main Offices of all Nashua public and private schools, Jeannotte’s Market, Bright Spot Convenience Store, Nashua Public Library and City Clerks Office at City Hall. Forms are available now at the recreation Office at Greeley Park and by visiting gonashua.com.

The age divisions are as follows (A player’s “league age” is age as of January 1, 2015):

Rookie League- Ages seven-eight years. Players in the Rookie League register and there are no tryouts. Players are assigned to a team. Junior League – ages 9-12 years.

Nine year olds can register and tryout for the Junior League. Any 9-year-old not making a Junior Team will be assigned to a Rookie Team. Please note the Junior National Division will merge with the Junior American Division to form one Junior League.

All returning Junior League Division players do not need to register or tryout, they return to their old junior teams. Only new players need to register and tryout.

Senior League – ages 13-16 years. All 13-year-olds and new players need to register and tryout. All returning players stay with their old teams.

Tryout dates, subject to change depending on field conditions and snow, are:

Nine and 10-year-olds – Tuesday, April 7, 6 p.m., Roby Park.

11-12-year olds –Thursday, April 19, 6 p.m., Roby Park.

Makeup for all 9-12-year-olds – Friday, Apr. 10, 6 p.m., Roby Park.

13-16-year-olds – Tuesday, April 14, 6 p.m., Roby Park.

Nashua Babe Ruth registration

All players league age 13 must sign up and tryout to play on a Babe Ruth team. A player’s “league age” is his/her age as of May 1, 2015.

All Ray Oban players from last year must re-register and tryout for Babe Ruth again this year. There is also high probability there will be no Ray Oban League this year due to declining numbers.

Deadline for registering is April 8. Any new players to Nashua age 14 and 15 need to register and tryout at the dates listed below.

All returning players are asked to fill out a registration form before the season starts.

Nashua Cal Ripken registration

Those interested in playing Nashua Cal Ripken baseball this spring can currently register on line at nashuacalripken.org. Tryout information will be soon be posted on the site as well.

Nashua Youth Soccer League Registration

The Nashua Youth Soccer League registration is open until March 23 for boys and girls in Nashua and surrounding towns born between Oct. 1,1995, and Sept. 30, 2009.

Registrations received by March 23 will be guaranteed placement on a team. Registrations received after that date may be put on a waiting list.

The season is tentatively scheduled to start Apr. 11.

Nashua Umpire Training Academy

The Nashua Baseball Umpires Association will hold its annual training program for anyone interested in becoming a certified Cal Ripken Baseball umpire.

The program has begun and runs through April 12 consists of training on in-depth rules, field and plate mechanics. For specific class information including class times, locations and cost, go to

Umass Lowell girls soccer clinic

The UMass Lowell women’s soccer coaching staff and players will hold a one day clinic for girls in grades 9-12 on Sunday, May 17, from noon to 4 p.m. at the turf field at the Cushing Field Complex.

The registration fee is $100 and is refundable in the case of inclement weather or if the camp is cancelled.

Football league accepting new members

The Northeast Junior High Football League (NJHFL) is currently accepting new members for the 2015 season.

The NJHFL offers three distinct levels of football and cheerleading for those athletes in grades two through eight. The league also holds its own cheer competition that is open both to league members and non-members.

The NJHFL has 13 organizations, representing 29 teams from southern New Hampshire and northeastern Massachusetts. Currently, more than 900 players and close to 700 cheerleaders participate in the league annually. For more information or league contact info, visit northeastjhfl.com

NH Knights openings

The New Hampshire Knights have openings on their U13 AAU team. Ages are determined on May 1, 2015. Last year this team finished third overall in the New England Regionals.

NH Grizzlies openings

The New Hampshire Grizzlies U14 baseball team has a few openings left for the 2015 season. This is a full-year program with winter workouts. John Roper pitching lessons

The John Roper Pitching School, run by the former Major Leaguer and Nashua Pride hurler, has openings for private and semi-private pitching lessons. Pitching classes include pitchers fielding practice, pick-off moves, covering bunts etc. There is a maximum of 10 students per class.
