The Merrimack Youth Wrestling Program had several good showings in their ninth annual Tomahawk Throwdown tournament, as 180 wrestlers from kindergarten through 4th grade competed for 14 teams from New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

First grader Owen Forrest made a strong showing in his first tournament by pinning all three of his opponents to claim the first place crown.

Likewise, second grader Ivey Johnson pinned her way to a first place finish.

Second graders Christian Chestnut and Jackson Meehan, third graders Mitchell Krupp and Kennedy Dillon, and fourth grader Gavin Ross all racked up multiple wins to claim second place medals.

Third place medal winners included kindergartners Kael McAloon and Rhys Dewar, first graders Gryffen Gelinas, Cayden Dine and Mason Tremblay, and third graders Logan Maynard and Christian Makowski.

Fourth place finishers were kindergartner Colin Schuster, first grader Katelyn McCormack, third graders Marshall Koranda and Kevin Sheridan, and fourth grader Willem McNay.]

Nashua School of Gymnastics teams solid at Hudson qualifier

Nashua School of Gymnastics Levels 4 and 5 team competed at a local recent qualifying meet in Hudson with some impressive showings.

Level 4 (9-10 Division):

Megan White had an All Around of 36.150 (third place); she scored a 9.10 (first) on vault, 9.250 (fifth) on bars, 8.80 on beam and 9.00 (sixth) on floor.

Makenzie Berleth had an All Around of 36.050j, good for fourth as she scored a first at 8.250 on vault, 9.60 (first) on bars, 9.350 (first) on beam and 8.850 on floor.

Jillian Gillis had an All Around of 33.750 as she scored an 8.850 (fourth) on vault, 7.50 on bars, 8.00 on beam and 9.40 (fourth) on floor.

Level 5 (9-10 Division):

Cristina Cross had a first place All Around of 36.100 with a 9.20 (first) on vault, 8.10 on bars, 9.50 on beam and 9.30 on floor.

Level 5 (11-plus Division):

April Koczalka had winning All Around of 37.650; she scored a 9.40 (first) on vault, 9.150 (first) on bars, 9.650 (first) on beam and 9.450 (second) on floor.

Sue Mai White had an All Around of 35.400 (third place); she scored a 9.250 (third) on vault, 8.050 on bars, 9.050 on beam and 9.505 on floor.

Annika Sinclair had an All Around of 35.150 (sixth place) with and an 8.70 on vault, 8.350 on bars, 8.80 on beam and 9.30 on floor.

Gabbi Gillis had an All Around of 34.900, scoring an 8.20 on vault, 8.10 on bars, 9.40 (second) on beam and 9.20 on floor.

Lindsey Campbell had an All Around of 34.550; she scored a 9.30 (second) on vault, 7.80 on bars, 8.050 on beam and 9.40 (third) on floor.

Meanwhile, the Nashua School of Gymnastics Levels 7-10 competed at the Boston Classic Invitational. Individual results as follows:

Level 7 (Child Division):

Corey Foster had a third-place All Around of 36.775; she scored a 9.30 (sixth) on vault, 9.125 (third) on bars, 9.10 (fourth on beam and 9.25 (fifth) on floor.

Level 7 (Junior Division):

Emily Colburn had an All Around of 26.250 with a 9.20 (sixth) on vault, 7.80 on bars and 9.250 on beam.

Abbey Catalano had an All Around of 16.650, scoring an 8.80 on vault and 7.850 on beam.

Level 7 (Senior Division):

Emmie White had a fist place All Around of 36.40 as she scored a 9.20 (second) on vault, 8.80 (first) on bars, 9.050 (first) on beam and 9.350 (second) on floor.

The St. Chris Girls Mites (3-5) beat Infant Jesus 21-20 in overtime as Amelia Piercy (five points), hit the game winning free throw with 50 seconds left.

Ana Stawasz erupted for 16 points for St Chris. Cameron Iaquinta, Caroline Vanderburgh and Ava Soucy played well defensively. Julia Gadbois, Emily Dowling and Zarina Nicholas rebounded well.

The 2-3 Junior Mites White edged Presentation of Mary White, 11-7 behind Ebuka Okorie’s 10 points. Zachary Samarel hit a free throw.

The Celtics’ Jacob Wilcox led all scorers with 23 points while Josh Farrel scored 22 for the Blue Devils.

Daija Davis had nine points while Alexa Wilkins, Natalie Burgess and Sarah Widfelt each had six for the Tigers.

Iruka Obinielo led the Rockets with eight.

Tigers defeat Bulls

Kylie Dawe scored 10 points while Erin Bourgeios, Shatia Elison and Theresa Elison added six apiece. Sarah Gelinas scored four for the Bulls.

The Knights’ Morgan Laforge lead all scorers with 10 points and Katie Bevilacqua played well defensively as the Knights (3-3) won their third straight.

Spurs 29, Celtics 28

Janessa Lofton had 18 for the Spurs while Alexis Roberge led the Celtics with 11.

Panthers 40, Spurs 11

Alexis Vachon (10 points) and Olivia Johnson (six) paced the Panthers.

LaForge led the Knights with five points in the third quarter, but Mia Maden and Vachon (eight each) led the Panthers.

Taylor Ireland and Mia Maden (four each) led a Panther fourth quarter rally.

 The Jazz hold off a Cougar comeback as Cody Gagnon and Drevin Richard played well defensively. Avian Carilla led the Cougers with 11 while Sam McElliott had a game high 14 points for the Jazz.

 The Sonics were led by Kaiden Giantsis’ game high 20 points, but Aneesh Kamilla and Devon Rouleau played well for the Jazz.

Luis Ortiz led the Cougars with 15 points. Tyler Armeen led the team in assists and steals, while Dylan Nolet led the Royals with 17 points.

Cavs 59, Bucks 21

Stav Alkalay led the winners with 14 points while Jacob Soucie rebounded well. The Bucks were led by Michael Popik’s seven points.

Cavs stayed undefeated as Josh Lentz had 17 points. Lukas Fong led the Stars with 12.

Sean Sullivan led all scorers with 11, while Ronit Khanna added six. Severen Johnson and Bailey Landsteiner each had six for the Spurs.

Lee Hill had the game-winner while teammate Dean Adams led all scorers with 17, including a game-tying basket as time expired in regulation.

Five Nashua champs earn spots at State Championship on Feb. 1

Five Nashua Elks Southwest District Champions – 13-year-old Peyton Adams and 9-year-old Ryan Haskell, 12-year-old Bianca Gershgorin, 10-year-old Ariana Sola and 9-year-old Morgan will compete for the 2015 State Elks State Hoop Shoot Free Throw Championship next Sunday, Feb. 1 in Portsmouth.

Each boy and girl in their respective age division will shoot 25 free throws with five extra tie-breakers as needed.

The six state champions will compete in the New England Regionals in Portland, Maine, on March 28 with the winners advancing to the national finals in Springfield, Mass., in April.

SNH Cavaliers AA2 win two

The Cavaliers first topped the Manchester Flames, 4-2 as the line of Colin Flood, Will Dodge and Isaac Windsor clicked for all four Cavaliers goals.

In the first period, defensemen Bryson Giersch and Aidan Rowe set the tone. Dodge scored first, assisted by Windsor, while Flood scored the second, assisted by Dodge.

Forwards Jack Conmy, Jonathan Childs and Ryan Bizier also kept the pressure on.

Manchester came back in the second to cut the lead in half with a 2-on-1 break in beating, goaltender Matt D’Ortona. But Flood scored his second goal to make it 3-1, assisted by Dodge. The pair reversed roles for a 4-1 lead, with defenseman Matthew MacBean also picking up an assist.

In the next game the Cavaliers AA2 blanked the Cavaliers Squirt AA1 team, 7-0.

AA2’s Ryan Kelley and Jake Lacasse played well early as a Lacasse steal set up a Dodge score.

For AA1, Chase Devins, Jesse Gertz and Emma Dunn had several scoring chances and Mike Spinazzola and Sinead Macraeg played well defensively. Cavan Quinn also played well in goal for AA1.

The Cavaliers AA2 went on to score six goals in the next two periods: Windsor (two), Jonathan Childs (two), Flood (one) and Dodge with a goal and two assists. Rowe and MacBean also had assists while D’Ortona earned the shutout in goal.

Mite

Cavs AA defeat Newburyport

The Cavalier Mites topped Newburyport 5-0 for their second straight win.

The offensive forward line of Jake Morowski, Brendon Doughty and Alex Gertz got things started very early in the period with just 15 ticks off the clock. Morowski converted a Doughty centering pass for the game’s first goal.

Meanwhile,the defensive pair of Saige Devins and Dan Byrne continued to keep the pressure on. Gertz turned his own intercepted pass into a goal making it 2-0. Morowski netted his second of the game on a pass from Gertz just a minute later.

The Cavs got solid goaltending from Noah Soule while the forward line of Andrew Byrne, Aine Kelly and Daniel Byrne played well.

Brendon Doughty and Andrew Byrne each netted a goal for the Cavs in the third period.

Junior high league starting

The Northeast Junior High Football League (NJHFL) is currently accepting new members for the 2015 season.

The NJHFL offers three distinct levels of football and cheerleading for those athletes in grades two through eight. The league also holds its own cheer competition that is open both to league members and nonmembers.

The NJHFL has 13 organizations, representing 29 teams from southern New Hampshire and northeastern Massachusetts. Currently, over 900 players and close to 700 cheerleaders participate in the league annually.

Nashua Cal Ripken registration

Tryouts for the 2015 season are scheduled for March 21 at the Nashua Sports Academy. All players that register for AAA and Majors who did not play on a roster for the league they signed up with last season must attend the tryouts. This year the teams in both AAA and Majors will stay together this year with the coach who they played for last year, with new players who are selected in the draft.

Nashua Baseball Academy is holding group training sessions

The Nashua Baseball Academy is currently having group training at the Hollis Training Facility, 265 Proctor Hill Road.

There is currently group training for ages 12 and under and ages 13 and older. The group meets twice a week for one-and-a-half hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays for five weeks and the focus is proper hitting, conditioning and throwing mechanics in a team-like setting

The session for ages 12 and under is 4-5:30 p.m. and 13 and older is5:30-7 p.m. They are free for members; the cost is $300 to non-members.

The New Hampshire Knights have openings on their 13U AAU team. Ages are determined on May 1st 2015. Last year this team finished third overall in the New England Regionals.

North Shore Lacrosse

North Shore Lacrosse will offer both leagues for youth, and a winter training camp for high school players.

The high school winter training camp will be Sundays through mid-March. Classes will be limited to a max of 25 players only, with Mark Anastas as one of the head coaches/instructors.
