Merrimack wrestlers compete in Salem tournament

The Merrimack Youth Wrestling Program sent eleven wrestlers to compete recently in the Jon Spohn Memorial Wrestling Classic held at Salem High School.

Individual results:

Third grader Kevin Sheridan lost a tough match but then rebounded to pin his next two opponents, netting a third-place finish.

Kindergartener Kael McAloon racked up three victories en route to his third-place finish.

Jackson Meehan, a first grader, won two matches by pin on the way to a fourth-place mark.

Kindergarteners Collin Schuster and Rhys Dewar, first grader Cayden Dine, third grader Mitchell Krupp, and sixth graders Anthony Maglio, Anson Dewar, and Aiden Hanning all won at least one match on the day.

Seventh grader, Diego Vizcarra, also participated in the tournament.

BASKETBALL

St. Christopher teams win

The St. Christopher School CYO Girls Mites won their second game of the season at Resurrection, 21-10. Ana Stawasz was hot off the block scoring all 10 of her team’s first-half points.

Cameron Iaquinta played hard and was able to add five points to the board. Zarina Nicholas, Claire LaPlante, and Aliya Lewis all contributed two points each. Amelia Piercy, Ava Soucy and Emily Dowling played solid half court defense and were instrumental in forcing many turnovers.

Julia Gadbois and Kate Hansen also rebounded well for the 2-4 Huskies.

The 5-0 Boys Mites Green also won against St. Kathryn at St. Joseph’s, 33-17, led by Keith Dow and Daniel Dockrill with eight points each. Other scorers included Trevor Labrecque, David Dow, Spencer Labrecque, Bobby Canaway, Danny Kevisha, Sammy Dufoe, and Reilly Hansen.

The Boys Mites White lost to Resurrection-Orange, 37-7 to fall to 0-4.

With only six players, the Junior Mites-White earlier fell 20-2 to PMA Maroon, with points scored by Zachary Samarel.

Junior Biddy:

Nuggets, 30, Mustangs 5

Sean Sullivan led the winners with eight points, followed by Aidan Sullivan and Shreyas Pedda with six each. Liam O’Keefe led the Nuggets’ defensive effort.

Nuggets 43, Sharks 23

Pedda led all scorers with 16. Joshua Mathson, Lewis Mazerolle, David Taylor, Sebastian Laleau and Collins Laleau played well defensively.

Kaval Botadra led all scorers with 14 points

HOCKEY

Cavaliers Squirt AA2 top Agawam

The Southern New Hampshire Cavaliers Squirt AA2 team recovered from a 5-3 loss to the Cavaliers Squirt AA1 quad to rout Agawam, 8-0.

Early on Cavs forwards Colin Flood, Will Dodge and Jayke Lacasse controlled play as Flood scored the game’s first goal, assisted by Dodge and Lacasse.

Lacasse was credited for another goal in the second period unassisted giving the Cavaliers a 2-0 at the end of two. In the third, Cavs defensemen Bryson Giersch as well as Thomas Cahill kept the pressure on, with Flood scoring, assisted by Cahill.

Forwards Isaac Windsor (two goals), Ryan Bizier and Jack Conmy scored four of the six third period goals. Assists went to Bizier and Aidan Rowe (two).

Cavs goaltender Matt D’Ortona made two late back to back saves to keep the shutout alive. Lacasse scored his second of the game in the third giving him a three-point game with assists from Flood and Dodge.

Cavaliers Squirt AA1 triumph

Down five players, the Cavaliers managed to edge the Chelmsford Squirts Lions in Valley League playe 3-2.

The first period was highlighted by strong Lion goaltending while Cavs.

Michael Spinazzola, Jesse Gertz and Nick Fortier controlled the neutral zone.

The Cavaliers had several scoring chances on a defensive rush by Gertz and another pair by Joe Rodwell and Chase Devins, but came up empty. Emma Dunn got the Cavs on the board stuffing in a rebound of a Gertz shot.

Gertz scored the second of the game for the Cavs with three minutes remaining in the period. Less than a minute later, the Lions answered back on a centering perfect pass from Michael Roberge to Michael Caruso, who beat Cavs goaltender Cavan Quinn, despite Quinn getting a glove on it.

With eight minutes remaining in the game, Gertz intercepted a breakout pass and fired it on net. Lions netminder Joe Gourley stopped the shot, but the puck remained unseen in the crease where Gertz pushed it over the line for a 3-1 Cavs lead. Chelmsford closed it to 3-2, but Gertz blocked a couple of shots down the stretch to preserve the win.

BULLETIN BOARD

Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest

Parish of the Resurrection Knights of Columbus Council 11573, and St. Joseph the Worker Council 123111, has scheduled its annual District Basketball Free Throw Contest at the Resurrection Parish Gym on Broad St. in Nashua for Jan. 17 from 9-11 a.m.

The competition is open to all boys and girls ages 9-14 and will be the best of 25 free throws with winners advancing to the state championship March 1, at St. Elizabeth Seton Parish Activity Center in Bedford,

Certificates of participation and trophies for the winners will be awarded. Final sign-in time for the event is 9:15 a.m. Jan. 17.

AAU basketball tryouts set

The C4 Boys AAU basketball tryouts for grades 4-11 will be held Jan.17 at Nashua Sports Academy, 90 Northwest Blvd., Nashua.

Umass Lowell Softball Clinic

The UMass Lowell softball program will be hosting a winter hitting and pitching clinic Jan. 24.

The clinic, which is open to female athletes in grades s7-12, will run from 9 a.m. -6:30 p.m. with six different sessions to choose from. Options include hitting only, pitching only, and hitting and pitching. Participants will be trained by the UMass Lowell players and coach Danielle Henderson and her staff. Sessions will be held at Mahoney Hall on UMass Lowell’s South Campus. Registration information can be found by visiting goriverhawks.com.
