Girls win Pelham Tourney

The Nashua Lady Nighthawks seventh grade team won the Pelham Holiday Slam Tournament by defeating Windham, Bow, and Pelham twice.

The team outscored its opponents 252-95 with an aggressive but disciplined defense.. Aaliyah Forman and Kirsten McIntire had a solid four games, combining for several offensive rebounds while scoring 12 and eight points respectively in the championship game win over Pelham.

Erin Carney, Abby Coy, Bianca Gershgorin, Hannah Muchemore, and Addison Smith also played well throughout the tournament.

In the championship game, Carney had a game high 27 points, while Muchemore chipped in with 15. The Lady Hawks were scheduled to return to River Valley League regular season play this weekend.

Six Nashuans competing in Elks Hoop Shoot

Nashua’s 13-year old Peyton Adams, 12-year old Bianca Gershgorin, 11-year-old Sebastian Coelho, 10-year old Ariana Sola, Ryan Haskell and Morgan Gillis, both age nine, will be seeking to win the 2015 New Hampshire State Elks South District Hoop Shoot Championship at 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 11 at Spaulding High School in Rochester.

The 2015 South District Champions will advance to the 2015 NH State Elks State Championship Hoop Shoot in Portsmouth on the weekend of February 1.

State winners will be advancing to the New England Regional Hoop Shoot in South Portland, Maine, on March 22. The Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Finals will take place in Springfield, Mass.in April.

Contestants in the South District competition will be from Elk Lodges of Nashua, Manchester, Concord, Keene, Portsmouth, Dover, Rochester and Derry/Salem. An awards luncheon will be held after the competition.

Cavaliers AA1 beat
Wilmington twice

The Cavaliers downed Wilmington twice, 8-7 and 7-4. In the first game, the Cavs rallied from a 7-6 deficit to win on Chase Devins’ goal with just two minutes left.

Early on, the Cavaliers jumped to a 2-0 lead thanks to the strong and speedy defensive pairs of Matt Choate and Sinead Macaraeg plus Michael Spinazzola and Nick Fortier, as well as the forward line of Kevin Sullivan, Chase Devins and Niko Mastakouras.

The first was netted by Sullivan who received a breakout pass from Devins at center ice and broke through both Wilmington defenders and pushed it into the back of the net. The second goal was netted by Devins who received a tap out from Mastakouras in traffic just in front of the net.

The Wildcats came out much stronger and motivated in the second period scoring just 50 seconds into the period to keep the game from getting away from them. The Cavs defense took matters into its own hands to answer back with Choate and Spinazzola rushing forward with the puck less than a minute later. The Wildcats and Cavs went goal for goal the remainder of the period netting nine between the two teams with Evan Doughty and Nick Bono getting in the mix each with a goal of their own for the Cavs.

The slugfest continued into the third period with the game within reach for the Wildcats. Wilmington scored first to tie it up, but a breakout pass from Fortier to Sullivan quickly gave the Cavs the lead once again.

With six minutes remaining, the Cats tied it up again and with just two minutes left in regulation, a two one one rush from Sullivan and Devins put the game winner on the board.

In the second game less than 12 hours later, the Cats still had plenty of fight left in them scoring first in less than three minutes in after a Cavs goal by Joe Rodwell was waved off due to a player kicking the fallen stick away from a Wildcat player.

The Cavaliers again responded quickly with Sullivan scoring, assisted by Jesse Gertz. Gertz scored another less than seven seconds later to make the score 2-1. With three minutes left in the period, the Cats tied it right back up again refusing to back down.

The Cats came out hard to start the period scoring first, but the Cavs answered quickly with Gertz scoring his second for the game assisted by Emma Dunn. The Cavs scored another two unanswered, unassisted goals by Nick Fortier and Nick Bono.

With four minutes into the third period, Gertz completed his hat trick assisted by Doughty and Mastakouras. The Cats brought the game to within two. But, with just over a minute left in the game, a speedy Gertz intercepted a pass back to the point and broke away for his fourth of the game on an empty netter.

Skating Club Open House

The Southern New Hampshire Skating Club will hold an open house at the JFK Coliseum in Manchester on Sunday rom 12:30-1:50 p.m. All interested skaters and families are welcome to attend an information session and group lesson.

The schedule of events includes information and off-ice activities from 12:30 until 1:20 p.m. Skaters will take part in on-ice activities from 1:20 until 1:50 p.m., which will include a group lesson, games, and open skating opportunities. Skaters of all ages from two years, 9 months through mature adult are welcome.

All participating skaters will receive a free gift for attending, and will be served free food and beverages.

BASEBALL

The Nashua Baseball Academy will be hosting upcoming clinics at the Hollis Training Facility, 265 Proctor Hill Road.

There will be a catchers clinic Monday, Dec. 29 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring quick feet/quick release throws, drop and block and proper sign giving. It is free to members, while a fee of $35 will be charged for non-members.

There will be a pitchers clinic on Tuesday, Dec. 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. featuring power windup, stretch, new pitches and pickoff moves. It is free for members, $35 for non members.

On Tuesday, Jan. 6 there will be group training for ages 12 and under and ages 13 and older. The group meets twice a week for one-and-a-half hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays for five weeks and the focus is proper hitting, conditioning and throwing mechanics in a team-like setting

The session for ages 12 and under is 4-5:30 p.m. and 13 and older is 5:30-7 p.m. They are free for members; the cost is $300 to non-members.

NH Knights openings

The New Hampshire Knights have a few openings for their 13U team

thatfinished third in the New England AAU Regionals last year as a 12Uteam. This team will be attending Baseball Heaven in New York in the

spring. All home games are played at Academy Field in Hollis, so there is little travel.

The New Hampshire Grizzlies U14 baseball team has a few openings left for the 2015 season. This is a full-year program with winter workouts.

North Shore Lacrosse

North Shore Lacrosse will offer both leagues for youth, and a winter training camp for high school players.

The high school winter training camp will be Sundays starting January 11 through mid-March. Classes will be limited to a max of 25 players only, with Mark Anastas as one of the head coaches/instructiors.
