Six Nashua youths – 13-year-old Peyton Adams, 12-year-old Bianca Gershgorin, 11-year-old Sebastioan Coelho, 10-year-old Ariana Sola, 9-year old Ryan Haskell and 9-year Morgan Gillis – won their respective age divisions at the 43rd annual Greater Nashua Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest at the Elm Street Middle School Gym.

The top shooter in the contest was Haskell with 18 out of 25 free throws in the 8-9 Boys Division. Runner-up Trevor Labrecque dropped in 16 free throws and third place went to Anant Madarapu.

Coelho won the 10-11 Boys Division with 17 free throws, edging out runner-up Devin Sawyer’s 15 free throws. Third place went to Zach Kouchalakis. Rounding out the three Boys division Winners was 12-13 Boys Champion Adams with 17 free throws, edging Nathan Kane (16 free throws). David Dow placed third.

Twelve-year old Gershgorin won the Girls 12-13 Division with 17 free throws. Rita Dow was second and Lauren Belair placed third. Sola won the 10-11 Girls Division with 15 free throws with runner-up honors going to Moutita Rana. Third place went to Grace Cardin. Rounding out the three Girls Division winners was 8-9 Champion Gillis, who beat out second place finisher Kelechi Okorie.

The six 2014 area champions will now compete in the New Hampshire State Elks 2015 South District Hoop Shoot Championships on Sunday, Jan. 11 at Spaulding High School in Rochester. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the South District Hoop Shoot starts at 9:30.

District winners will advance to the State Finals in Portsmouth on Feb. 1 with winners advancing to the New England Regional Hoop Shoot in South Portland, Me., in March. The Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Finals will take place in Springfield, Mass., in April.

Bulldog Dean Adams led all scorers with eight points Cayden Ninteau added six. Lee Hill and Keith O’Donnell had four each.

Bulldogs 25, Sharks 22 (OT)

Dean Adams led all scorers with 19 pts, Hunter Ward added four and Eli Meesig had two. Ian Mack, Shea Ninteau, Cayden Ninteau, Lee Hill, Tyler Rollo, and Keith O’Donnell all played well defensively.

Nuggets 34, Sonics 10

Nuggets’ Shreyas Pedda led all scorers with 12 points while Kaval Botadra dumped in eight. Aidan Sullivan and Sean Sullivan both added four. The Sonics were led by Caden Sims (four points) with support from Arish Khanna and Zack Newell (two each).

Nuggets 29, Stars 20

Aidan Sullivan played well defensively for the winners, while Ronit Khanna led the way on offense with 11 points.

HOCKEY

Cavalier AA1 6, Cape Ann 1

With forward Chase Devins out due to injury, the forward line of Jesse Gertz, Niko Mastakouras and Joe Rodwell started the first period with immediate pressure on the Cape Ann defense and goaltender.

Interference penalties against Matthew Choate and Sinead Macaraeg didn’t do damage and with ust a few minutes left in the first period, the Cavs were able to put the first two goals of the game up less than a minute apart. The first came on a breakout play from Mastakouras to Gertz, who scored. The second goal was made by Kevin Sullivan who managed to split the defense ahead of Evan Doughty carrying the puck. Doughty hit Sullivan in stride and the latter converted for a 2-0 lead.

The Cavs stared the second period with Nick Fortier, Emma Dunn and Rodwell on the ice. Backchecking from Emma Dunn forcing turnovers allowing the speed of Gertz to take advantage for the second time in the game on a breakout pass from Fortier. With just seconds remaining in the period, Sullivan, able to get a faceoff with to Rodwell put one through the legs of the Cape goaltender for the Cavs fifth.

Cavs goaltender Kyle McGrath was superb, giving up just a meaningless late goal.

Nashua School of Gymnastics

Level 5 wins, 7 third at Mass. meet

Nashua School of Gymnastics’ Levels 4-10 gymnasts competed in the recent Future Stars of the Red Carpet at Gym Street in Wilmington, Mass. The Level 5 gymnasts won their team title with 108.10 points.

The Level 7 team finished third with a score of 106.05.

Jillian Gillis had an All Around of 32.125; she scored an 8.60 on vault, 7.075 on bars, 8.15 on beam and 8.30 on floor.

April Koczalka captured the All Around with a 36.525 as she scored a 9.25 (first) on vault, 9.00 (first) on bars, 9.15 (first) on beam and 9.125 (second) on floor.

Annika Sinclair had an All Around of 35.475 (second place); she scored an 8.45 on vault, 8.80 (second) on bars, 9.10 on (second) beam and 9.125 (third) on floor.

Four girls competing for MYW

Locally, the grade K-6 Merrimack Youth Wrestling program boasts four girls on its roster this season. Catherine Hovan, Ivey Johnson, Katelyn McCormack and Kennedy Dillon represent 10 percent of the full 40-wrestler squad.

Hovan, 10, is the most experienced of the group, having been with the program for three years. She also is a blue belt in Judo. Johnson, 7, is in her second year with the program. McCormack, age 6, is in her first year, as is 9-year-old Dillon.

NH Knights openings

The New Hampshire Knights have a few openings for their 13U team thatfinished third in the New England AAU Regionals last year as a 12U team. This team will be attending Baseball Heaven in New York in the

NSL leagues, camps available

North Shore Lacrosse will offer both leagues for youth, and a winter training camp for high school players.
