Squirts AA2 tie Andover

Andover jumped off to a quick 1-0 lead scoring just minutes off the opening faceoff but the Cavaliers eventually forged a 4-4 tie in Valley League play.

The Cavaliers offense as well as the defensive pairing of Thomas Cahill and Bryson Giersch managed to hold off Andover while Cavaliers linemates, Colin Flood, Will Dodge and Jayke Lacasse put pressure on Andover’s defense.

Andover scored a power play goal late in the period for a 2-0 lead. With just under five minutes left in the first, forwards Jack Conmy, Ryan Bizier and Isaac Windsor started to break down Andover’s defense getting multiple shots on net.

Ryan Kelly and Matthew MacBean kept the play in Andover’s end not allowing the wingers to clear the puck. Bizier got a dump in off the boards and set it back to MacBean at the point, who scored his first goal of the season with a wrist shot cutting the lead in half.

Just moments later Dodge tied the game 2-2 to end the first. In the second period , the Cavs and Warriors exchanged offensive drives with Andover netting one more for a 3-2 lead. The Cavs’ Will Dodge tied the game half way through the third.

Andover pushed back with an odd man rush and went back on top 4-3. But Cavaliers Flood, Bizier and Dodge combined for the tying goal, giving Dodge a natural hat trick.

Down a man with under a minute to play, Cavaliers Goaltender Matthew D’Ortona made two huge saves to end the game with a tie.

Squirts 6, Chelmsford 3

The Cavs extended their win streak to three games as the forward line of Jesse Gertz, Nick Bono and Niko Mastakouras maintained constant first period pressure.

The Cavalier forward line of Nick Fortier, Chase Devins and Evan Doughty managed to score the first of the game with only three minutes left in the first period. A low rebound off the stick of Fortier with Doughty crashing the net from the slot secured the goal.

Chelmsford answered back quickly with a goal of their own less than a minute later. Barely off the high from the previous goal, Doughty quickly answered back less than 30 seconds later netting his second of the period.

With just a pair of minutes left in the period, Devins scored two quick goals to end the period. The first was off a rebound that settled right in the crease off of a hard shot on net from Bono, the second was a cycling pass from Bono to Emma Dunn to Devins who hit the back of the net from the blue line.

The second period started off a little chippy for the Cavaliers, who got good goaltending from Cavan Quinn.

Penalties to defenders Kevin Sullivan and Matt Choate (four minute double minors) led to a Chelmsford power play goal. Late in the period, Gertz hit Mastakouras in the slot with a backhanded pass and the latter converted it into his first goal of the year and a 5-2 lead.

The third and final period featured superb goaltending on both sides of the ice with Quinn making a great glove save on the first scoring chance of the period for Chelmsford.

The Cavs struck first again halfway through the period with Bono’s breakaway backhand goal. Chelmsford struck last with less than 30 seconds left in the game, but it wasn’t enough.
