Cal Ripken baseball, Blast lacrosse results

CAL RIPKEN BASEBALL

Rangers 16, Rockies 13

The Rangers scored five in their half of the third, a key to this back-and-forth contest. It was highlighted by Matt Robert hustling out an infield hit to reach safely and Devyn Lavoie lacing a waist-high line drive RBI down the third-base line.

Nick Root and Daniel Bentley hit back-to-back singles leading off the Rockies’ fourth and Wilson brought them home with his second hit of the game. Rangers’ reliever DiGesse continued to throw strikes, sitting down two Rockies and making a great defensive play on the assisted put out at first for his third out.

Royals 8, A’s 5

The Royals were led by Liam Novak (2 for 3 with two runs scored), Cody Rocheleau (two RBIs) and Stephen Loranger (double). Mason Linscott (single, two runs), Parker Obenhofer (homer) and Will Whelan (single, RBI) led the A’s.

Diamondbacks 12, Orioles 9

Anthony Infante hit an inside-the-park homer for the Diamondbacks, who won the game on Robbie Cullerton’s RBI double. Sam McElliot pitched two strong innings for the Orioles, who also got a triple from Sam McEliot.

Red Sox 6, Giants 5

Tyler Griffin led the Red Sox to victory with two hits and three innings of pitching. Braden McDonald and Eren Labonte had two hits each for the Giants.

Royals 4, Athletics 2

The A’s were led in hitting by Zach Rioux (two hits) and the Royals by Liam Novak (2 for 2, 3 RBIs) and Reel (two runs scored). A late A’s rally was cut short by a great catch in right field by Christian Digregorio, robbing Nolan Foss of his third hit of the game with a runner on third.

Dodgers 5, Giants 4

The Dodgers had hits from David Mullaney, Nolan Mederos and Brady Swisher, and Mullaney stole home three times. Hayden Leone, Leo Kopicki, and Michael Rutstein all had RBIs for the winners.

Giants 11, Cardinals 8

The Giants pulled out a back in forth game with an offense led by Eren Labonte, Josh Lentz and Peter Bauer. Matt Thibault
(3 for 3, two runs, two
RBIs), Alex Lambalot, Drew Frost and AAA call up Zach Hureau all had key hits for the error-prone Cardinals.

Royals 6, Phillies 4

Colton Welch and Varun Lingadal held the Phillies scoreless through four innings with eight strikeouts, allowing only three baserunners. Up 2-0, the Royals expanded the lead to 6-0 in the fourth on four straight hits including RBI doubles from Lingadal and Liam Novak.

In the sixth the Phillies made it interesting with two-run homers from Matylewski and Hector Rodriguez.

Dodgers 11, Rangers 6

In the season opener for both AAA teams, the Dodgers started with a three-run first inning highlighted by Nolan Mederos’ RBI single. David Mullaney scored three runs for the Dodgers. Nick Tilton scored the Rangers first run of the season and Nick DiGesse and Mason Tanner each had strong hits in a Rangers’ fourth inning rally that fell short.

Pirates 7, Tigers 6

Colin Holbrook pitched three tough innings for the Pirates and had a key hit.

Nationals 8, Cardinals 5

Nathan Smith shut the door on an early Cardinal rally, had a big hit and the Nats got a key two-run single from Seth Brooking. Braden Welch scored a big run for the Cards all the way from second base, escaping a rundown.

Astros 7, Giants 4

The Astros rallied from a 4-2 deficit, keyed by a Joe Hitzman hit and three shutout innings from Andrew Barry.Leo Kopico and Dylan Homesey had doubles for the Giants.

LACROSSE

Girls U13 Blast White top Merrimack

Emily Morneau started in center for the Blast with support from the other midfield players Britney Pearson, Bailey Morin, Emily Colburn and Kirsten McIntire in a 10-9 win over Merrimack.

The Blast took the quick lead with an immediate pass from Pearson to attack Taylor Guilfoil. The first few minutes passed rapidly where Guilfoil assisted Sarah Signorello for a shot then Guilfoil assisted Colburn for her first score of the season. Pearson played hard running the field and had another assist to McInitire. Payson Mooso had a great pass to McIntire for her second score. Merrimack didn’t let down, and pushed defensive players Theresa Ellison, Madison Sewade, and Mooso to work hard to protect goalie Anyssa Mitchell, who had two saves.

By the start of the second half, Merrimack had the lead 6-5, but the Blast’s McIntire scored unassisted and then turned an assist the next play for Signorello to get her second score.

Working at attack, Cara Lecklider passed to Guilfoil for her second score followed by an unassisted goal by Signorello, making it her third point.

Attack players Ida Gnanou and Kaylie Keegan came up with many ground balls and Mitchell provided an assist where Guilfoil scored her third for the day. Switches to the Blast offense and defense allowed Sophie Searles, Nicole Yeaton, Grace Wilson, Olivia Kingston, Olivia Howley to get some stick time.

Mooso also played in goal for Nashua, making three saves.

Blast Purple U11 Girls Hampton 10, Nashua 6

Nashua bowed at Hampton to fall to 3-2 in the New Hampshire Youth Lacrosse Association League, thanks to several unforced errors that allowed the Blast to be outshot 20-12.

Hampton jumped out to a 4-0 lead as the Blast’s first goal did not come until Julia Cote scored unassisted 17 minutes into the first half. Olivia Johnson scored a minute later assisted by Cote.

Hampton scored again a minute before halftime to push the lead to 5-2 but Nashua answered before the intermission on a Charllotte Moloney goal, assisted by Johnson, to cut the lead to 5-3.

The Blast came out in the second half and put up two unassisted goals by Cote to tie the score at 5-5. But, Hampton responded by scoring the next two goals before Cote notched her fourth goal of the game, unassisted to make the score 7-6.

Two more goals by Hampton extended the host’s lead to 9-6. Cote had what appeared to be a goal but it was waived off with a crease violation, keeping the score at 9-6.

The Blast had another opportunity, but another apparent goal was not upheld.Nashua goaltender Halee Mele faced 20 shots making 10 saves.

Blast sweep tournament

The Blast played four modified games winning all four in convincing style in a non-league tournament at Longmeadow, Mass.

The Blast began with a 9-0 win over West Hartford, Conn. as Olivia Johnson scored three goals, Kiley O’Brien one goal, Bree Cooley a goal and an assist, Charlotte Moloney one goal, Lindsey Hult one goal and an assist, Lillia Szewczyk a goal, and Caitlyn Harrington one goal. Alyssa Ann Johnson, Iruka Obinelo and Lauren Grondin led the defensive effort.

The second game the Blast beat Longmeadown 6-2 as Cooley had two goals, Liv Hlebichuk one goal, Hult and Olivia Johnson one goal apiece, Hannah Martin one goal, Grace Bellevance two assists, and Julia Mendes one assist.

The third game saw the Blast beat the Longmeadow White team 7-2. Johnson scored four goals, O’Brien three goals, Harrington and Bellevance with an assist each. Makenzie Smith and Elinor Addonizio led the team defensively.

In the final game the Blast beat Amherst, Mass., 7-1. Hult tallied three goals and an assist, O’Brien two goals and an assist. Hlebichuk and Mendes had a goal apiece while Cooley and Amelia Pearcy each had an assist.

Halee Mele played well in goal in the first three games while Olivia Johnson did well minding the net in game four.

Blast U15 Purple boys fall to Windham

The Blast (2-3) struck first with a goal by Todd Redman(four goals, one assist) and led 12-8 at one point but eventually fell 13-12.

Max Wright played an excellent game between the pipes for the Blast with 12 saves. Shafer Rancourt and Nate Radin had great performances on defense despite the tough loss. Devin Linscott and Troy Bottari both had three goals, while Zach Clancy added two goals and an assist.

Registration and tryouts for the Nashua Independent Baseball Team Chiefs, formerly known as Senior Babe Ruth, will continue Sunday at 9 a.m. at Ledge St. Field next to the Nashua Girls and Boys Club. This league is open to players ages 16 and players who do not turn 20 before Aug. 8, 2014
