Hollis snowboarder Will Wood takes 10th in national competition
Hollis snowboarder Will Wood finished 10th in the USASA Nationals, U-13 Breaker Age division in recent competition in Copper, Colo..
Wood, who began snowboarding at age 4 at Mount Sunapee, had finished in the top 39 at age 11 and then the top 20 at age 12.
In the U-13 slopestyle competition, Wood’s 40 foot jumps and technical rail rides gave him the edge he needed to break into the top 10.
“I threw a tweaked out, back 1, Japan air on my second run which got me in the top 10,” Wood said. “I held the holy grail as long as I could and stretched out the air time to maximize my score, and it worked.
“I’m really excited because all my trampoline and skateboard practice helped me pull off a couple great runs at the Nationals. I can hardly wait for opening day at Crotched next year to get back on the snow.”
YOUTH HOCKEY
Cavs Squirt Blue win title
The Southern New Hampshire Cavaliers topped the National Division top seed Medford Mustangs, 5-0, to win the Valley Hockey League championship.
Goaltender Matthew D’Ortona got the shutout in net. The Cavaliers put up three goals in the first and never looked back. The goals were scored by Ryan Kelley (game winner) assisted by Will Dodge; Andrew Ducharme (assisted by Matthew MacBean) and Ethan Gaffney assisted by Dodge.
After a scoreless second period, the Cavs added two more unassisted goals in the third by Ducharme and Dodge to seal the win.
Before that win, the Cavs topped No. 2 seeded Chelmsford, Mass., 5-1, in the American North Divisional championship game.
The Cavaliers line of Dodge, Ryan Bizier and Aidan Rowe came out strong. Rowe slipped a shot under Chelmsford goaltender’s right pad for the first goal just 14 seconds into the game with an assist to Dodge.
Defensemen Thomas Cahill and MacBean frustrated the Chelmsford offense with constant pressure in the neutral zone and along the boards.
During a quick change, Nate Bizier and linemates Andrea Ducharme and Ryan Kelley put the pressure on the Chelmsford defense. Chelmsford clearing attempt was halted at the blue line by Cahill, and Cahill’s dump in was picked up by Ducharme, who scored for a 2-0 lead.
The Cavs would take a commanding 3-0 lead into the second period on a blue line wrist shot from Ethan Gaffney. Second period action was a back and forth defensive battle. Defensemen Ben Foley’s awareness in the Cavs’ end supported goaltender D’Ortona during any scoring threats by Chelmsford.
The Cavaliers netted two more goals by Ducharme in the third with an assist going to Ryan Kelley. Chelmsford scored late in the game to account for the 5-1 final and the Cavs captured the divisional title before winning the league crown.
The Cavaliers Squirt Blue team was coached by Mike Dodge, Michelle MacBean, Mark Cahill and Jim Bizier.
