Nashua’s Fontanez takes New England Silver Mittens title

BOXING

Matt Fontanez, a freshman at Nashua South High School and Nashua PAL boxer with trainer Bill Murphy, fought three times in the last two weeks capturing the New England Silver Mittens Championship in Lowell. Mass.

Fontanez now moves on to the Junior Olympics next week.

Fontanez fought three times, first in Billerica, Mass. And and the last two in Lowell, Mass., winning each fight by unanimous decision (30-27 in points). Opponents were from from Providence R.I., Springfield Mass and Boston.

BASKETBALL

Merrimack sixth grade champions

The Merrimack travel sixth grade basketball team completed its 4-0 Manchester Suburban League championship run with a 33-17 win over Amherst at the RIM in Hampton.

The win in the finals came courtesy of tough defense and good ball movement. Earlier in the playoffs, Merrimack beat Londonderry 44-38, Amherst 31-19, and New Boston 43-25.

The team included: Tyler Seaver, Matt Dagan, Mason Walters, Greg Smith, Connor Mann, Devin Mitrano, Johnathan Paulhamus, Noah Clark, Sean Powers, Mike Johnson, Ryan Ivester, Ricky Hussey, (Manger) Kevin Seaver, (Coach) Tal Dagan & (Coach) Chad Seaver.

NE Flames Seventh Grade Girls A Team

The Flames competed in the Power Rankings Event this past weekend in Derry. The girls split the games winning two and losing two.

The Flames opened with a 10-point loss to the NE Blaze. Katie Chaisson from Pelham led all scorers with 10 points while Nashua’s Jasmine Sylvester had nine. The Flames then went on to defeat the Mass. Rebels, 43-33 as Chaisson led all scorers with 11 points. Nashua’s Arianna Motivala had seven, while Nashua’s Jaden Smith added five points. Katie Carr, also of Nashua, controlled the defensive boards in both games while Nashua’s Julia Gagnon and Peyton Ryan, along with Pelham’s Olivia Gagnon played well defensively.

Pelham’s Becca Marion also played well with several assists.

The Flames then suffered a seven-point loss to the MA Rivals by seven points. Motivala led all scorers with 10 points while Gagnon added four and Jasmine Sylvester of Nashua added five points. Carr controlled the defensive boards.

The Flames won the final game of the tourney over the Merrimack Valley Roadrunners. The Flames were in control the entire game and up by 15 points at halftime.

Motivala led the way with 14 points, while Sylvester had 13, Gagnon 12 and Smith, eight. Smith and Carr controlled the offense and defense boards while Motivala, Gagnon and Chaisson caused many quick turnovers on defense.

SWIMMING

The Executive Swim Club recently won the New Hampshire Swim Association Championship at Upper Valley Aquatic Center in White River Junction, Vt. The Executive, which also won the title in 2010, 2011, and 2013, totaled 3,919.5 points, more than 1,400 over host Upper Valley. Rounding out the other top five teams were Exeter Swim Team, RAYS of Londonderry, and Manchester Swim Team.

Other area teams participating were FINS of Nashua, YMCA of Greater Nashua and Salem Sea Lions. Setting meet records over the three day meet were: Colin Allen, 12, of Bedford (50 backstroke 27.23, 50 freestyle 24.41, and 200 individual medley 2:13.04), Julian Chun, 12, of Bedford (50 breaststroke 31.97 and 100 freestyle 54.77), Matthew Grauslys, 17, of Manchester (200 individual medley 1:51.43, 100 butterfly 49.02, 200 freestyle 1:42.10), Andrew Allen, 14, of Bedford (100 butterfly 53.80, 100 freestyle 49.83 and 200 freestyle 1:48.24), and Elliot Chun, 17, of Bedford (100 breaststroke 58.80).

Two Executive relay teams also set records: The 13-14 boys 200 freestyle relay (Andrew Allen, Agrim Sharma, Trent Levasseur, Michael Giraldi 1:34.87), and the 15-19 boys medley relay (Grant Levasseur, Chun, Grauslys, Joe Moleski 1:35.86).

Winning events in addition to the record setters were: Evan Allen of Bedford ( age 8-and-under 25 and 50 freestyles), Alex Bedard of Amherst (age 15-16 100 breaststroke, 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke), Jenna Charlat of Bedford (9-10 50 and 100 freestyles, 50 butterfly), Michael Douglas (15-16 200 freestyle ), Matthew Falcone of Hollis (15-16 200 individual medley), and Sydney Grogan (8-and-under 25 butterfly ).

GYMNASTICS

Nashua School of Gymnastics

The Nashua School of Gymnastics level 6 competed at the New Hampshire Sectional Meet at Granite State Gymnastics in Bow with Devon Rosier leading the way with a first place finish.

Individual results as follows:

Level 6 (11-12-year-old age group)

Rosier posted a first place all-around score of 37.425 as she scored a 9.225 (first) on vault, 9.175 (first) on bars, 9.425 (first) on beam and 9.60 (first) on floor.

Jenna Hantula had a third place all-around score of 36.175; she scored an 8.95 (third) on vault, 8.95 (third) on bars, 9.15 (third) on beam and 9.125 on floor.

Emily Colburn had an all-around score of 35.70; she scored an 8.675 on vault , 8.65 on bars , 9.15 (third) on beam and 9.225 (3rd) on floor.

Abbey Catalano posted an all-around score of 35.30 with an 8.70 on vault, 9.10 (second) on bars, 8.90 on beam and 8.60 on floor.

Level 6 (13 years old)

Emmie White had an all-around score of 36.20 (third). She scored an 8.95 (third) on vault, 8.90 on bars, 8.875 on beam and 9.475 (first) on floor.

Lexi Sarro had an all-around score of 35.95 (fifth); she scored an 8.45 on vault, 9.05 (fourth) on bars, 9.275 (second) on beam and 9.175 (fourth) on floor.

Hannah Speighthad an all-around score of 35.90; she scored an 8.50 on vault, 9.00 (fifth) on bars, 9.375 (first) on beam and 9.025 on floor.

Abby Fitzpatrick had an all-around score of 35.30 as she had an 8.90 (fourth) on vault, 8.775 on bars, 8.60 on beam and 9.025 on floor.

Olivia Bouthot had an all-around score of 35.175; she scored an 8.275 on vault, 9.10 (third) on bars, 8.60 on beam and 9.20 (third) on floor.

Madelyn Campano had an all-around score of 34.125 as she scored an 8.65 on vault, 8.725 on bars, 7.95 on beam and 8.80 on floor.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Nashua Youth Soccer League registration

Registration for the Nashua Youth Soccer League is open to boys and girls in Nashua and surrounding towns born between Oct. 1,1994 and Sept. 30, 2008.

Youths can register on line at NashuaYouthSoccer.org. Regular registration closed on March 25, but registrations from now on may be put on a waiting list.

The season is tentatively scheduled to start on April 12. Also, coaches and volunteers are needed.

Team NH Baseball

Nashua PAL Football

The Nashua PAL Force is currently accepting coaching applications as well as athlete registrations for the upcoming football and cheer season.

Hudson Youth Baseball

Spring registration for Hudson Youth Baseball is now open. HYB features six divisions (T-ball, Rookie, AA, AAA, Majors, and Babe Ruth Division) for boys and girls ages 4-15.

Granite Heat AAU baseball

The Youngsville Granite Heat AAU teams are looking for two more U13 baseball players and four more U14 players.

Players must be team age as of May 1 2014, and the season starts March 29.

Nashua Baseball Academy

The Nashua Baseball Academy will hold group training for athletes to prepare for the upcoming spring season. Training is offered in age brackets 12 and under and 13 and older.

Practices are twice per week for one-and-a-half hours and fundamentals and mechanics are covered in a team like setting. Boys are taught a skill, involved in repetitive exercises to practice the skill and then compete in fun games to test and improve skills.
