Cavs Squirt Blue wins Gold

The Southern New Hampshire Cavaliers Squirt Blue team win the Pot of Gold Championship in Woodstock, Vt., downing the Connecticut Seahawks Squirts 3-1 in the title game.

The Cavaliers Squirt Blue swept the tournament beating all challenging teams. The Cavaliers defeated the SAM Moose Squirts 9-3, Western Junior Colonials 5-4, and Connecticut Seahawks Squirts 5-1 right before a rematch in the finals.

Members of the championship team included: goaltender Matthew D’Ortona; defensemen Matthew MacBean, Benjamin Foley, Ethan Gaffney and Thomas Cahill; forwards Ryan Kelly, Jack Conmy, Aidan Rowe, Andre Ducharme, Ryan Bizier, Nate Bizier, and Will Dodge. Coaches for the Cavaliers were Mike Dodge, Michelle MacBean, Mark Cahill and Jim Bizier.

Cavaliers Squirt 2 White on top

The SNH Cavaliers Squirt 2 White team defeated Marblehead 4-3 on Sal Vella’s late goal in Valley League play, the teams’ third matchup of the season.

The Cavaliers defensive pair of Michael Spinazzola and Vella used their speed to keep the Marblehead offense from gaining the offensive zone. In the first period, the Cavs outshot Marblehead, 6-3. While the Cavaliers goaltender Ryan McInnis managed to block all the shots put on him, Jesse Gertz scored first for the Cavs after driving his own rebound pass between the goalpost and the goaltender’s leg pad.

In the second period, McInnis kept Marblehead off the board on a pair of break-aways and a pair of 2 on 1 opportunities, but Marblehead capitalized on its fifth scoring chance by just beating McInnis glove side high. Just a minute later, Jesse Gertz answered with his second of the game on a backhand tip on a Jacob Roy shot from the defensive point to give the Cavs a one-goal lead.

Two minutes into the third period, Marblehead capitalized on another odd-man rush to tie the game 3-3.

Penalties kept both teams from creating scoring chances for most of the third period . However, Vella was able to pick off a clearing pass with a minute left in the game. Vella skated with the puck to the outside just around the defense curling back at the last second getting a shot off towards the far post that just cleared the opposing goalie’s blocker for the game-winner.
