Kyle Gora, a Nashua Catholic wrestler from Hudson took first place for the 103-pound weight class in the fifth-and-sixth-grade division at the New England Youth Wrestling Championships in North Andover, Mass. Nearly 1,000 wrestlers competed.

Several other Nashua youth wrestlers competed and all made the podium in their perspective weight classes. They included:

Fifth-and-sixth-grade division – Zach Rioux (Boys & Girls Club of Nashua), third place, 91 pounds; Owen Finn (Elm Street Middle School), fourth place, 73 pounds.; Nathan Zalzal (Fairgrounds Middle School), fourth place, 138 pounds, Owen Duda (Elm Street), sixth place, 103 pounds.

Elementary division – Liam Finn (BGCN), sixth place, 77 pounds.

Seventh-and eighth-grade-division – Kevin Lyskawa (Nashua Catholic), third place, 94 pound.

Hollis Brookline Middle School eighth grader Clement Sherwood placed third in the 188-pound weight class. He is coached by Hollis Brookline junior Andrew Butler.

Squirt Blue wins two

The Cavs first won a shootout over Framingham, Mass., 13-7 behind Nate Bizier’s six goals and three assists. Other scoring came from Andrea Ducharme (hat trick, assist), Matthew D’Ortona (seven assists), Will Dodge (two goals and an assist), Ryan Bizier (goal, assist), Thomas Cahill (goal) and Aidan Rowe with an assist. Ben Foley got the win in net.

The Cavs then topped Newburyport, Mass., 3-1.

The second game of the weekend was a defensive matchup against Newburyport.

The strong blue line presence of Matthew MacBean and Thomas Cahill kept the Newbury offense away from Foley while Nate Bizier scored on a rebound off of a D’Ortona shot to put the Cavs on top 1-0 late in the first period.

Newburyport quickly tied the game on a power play. With the game tied forwards Ryan Kelley, Dodge and Ryan Bizier kept the pressure on Newburyport, during a quick line change an errant Newburyport pass was picked up by a pinching Cahill sending Ducharme in for the 2-1 lead.

The Cavs topped off the scoring with a Ethan Gaffney goal, assists going to D’Ortona, Nate Bizier and Ducharme.

Cavs Squirt 2 White

makes quarterfinals

The Cavaliers Squirt 2 White team advance to and defeated in quarterfinal round of Casco Bay Tournament in Portland, Maine, over the weekend.

The Cavaliers defeated the Casco Bay Squirts to start the tournament, 6-3. The Cavs came out very strong in the first period with Matt Choate assisting both Kevin Sullivan and Jesse Gertz to quickly go ahead by two goals.

CB answered with a goal of their own to start the second period, but Gertz scored his second of the game, assisted by Chase.

CB cut the lead to 2-1 but just as the period was winding down, Sullivan also scored his second of the game on a pass from defenseman Sal Vella to add to the Cavs lead.

With a minute left to play, the Mariners pulled their goalie and pressured Cavs goaltender Ryan McInnis. With about 30 seconds left to play, Gertz cleared the zone allowing Matthew Choate to break through the defense and put the insurance goal into the back of the net.

In the second game of round robin play, the Cavs topped the Maine Junior Black Bears, 6-0, thanks in part to the defense provided by Sal Vella, Michael Spinazzola and Chase Devins.

The Cavaliers came out strong offensively in the first period with an unassisted goal by Vella, a pair by Ty Soule and a fourth by Kevin Sullivan assisted by Soule. Sullivan and Soule put up another pair of goals in the third period,assisted by Evan Doughty.

The Cavs tied the undefeated U12 Casco Bay girls team 2-2 in the final game of round robin play. After a scoreless first period, Sullivan scored with an assist from Choate to cap off consistent Cavs pressure. CB tied the game and went ahead 2-1 late in the third before Jacob Roy scored with 40 seconds left to create the tie.

The Cavs ended up losing in a rematch with the CB girls in the quarterfinals, 1-0, thanks to a second period defensive lapse. Devins, Spinazzola and Vella all played well, as did McInnis in net.

The St. Chris squad all contributed with rebounds, steals, assists and overall strong defense. Chase Nickerson (10), Matthew Thibault (nine), Emeka Okorie (five), Alex Williams (five), Nasir Perry (four), Alex Nicholas (two) and Joey Stone (two) put the points on the board for the St. Chris Huskies. Williams was named MVP with several assists in addition to his five points.

Tigers finish undefeated

The Tigers completed consecutive undefeated seasons with a 37-31 win over the Celtics in the championship game. Emily Foltan led the Tigers with 13 points, while Theresa Elison had eight and Hannah Muchemore added seven.

Kendall Bush, Grace Wilson, Alexa Wilkins, Yesha Patel and Daija Davis also scored for the Tigers. Also, Chloe Goforth, Erin Bourgeois, Sarah Widtfelt, Crissa Wainright and Elise Mikailov all played well.

The Celtics were led by Heather Bridge’s 14 points. Ashley Roberts added nine and Amber Dube four, while Alana Vautour and Anicia Durham also scored for the Celtics.

The Nighthawks White Team placed first in the Fifth-Sixth Grade Division of the Shamrock Basketball Tournament in Billerica, Mass.

In their first game, they defeated Tewksbury 27-23 as scorers included Sam McElliott (seven points), Sebastian Coelho (six), Stephen Norris and Isaac Acorn (five), and Sid Dutta and Connor Dunning (two each).

Nashua downed Billerica 62-44 in the title game, rallying from three points down at halftime behind McElliott’s 25 points and 11 from Acorn.

Additional scoring came from Norris (seven), Dutta and Dunning (five), Daniel Dockrill (four), Coelho (three) and Landon Moore (two).

The team included Isaac Acorn, Sebastian Coelho, Daniel Dockrill, Nick Drew, Connor Dunning, Sid Dutta, Kyle Gauthier, Geoffrey Lynch, Sam McElliott, Landon Moore and Stephen Norris.

Fifth-grade Green

The Nighthawks won their second straight Massachusetts Travel League state championship, capturing the invitation-only tournament with three straight wins.

The Nighthawks downed Newton (50-37), Shrewsbury (59-33, Shrewsbury’s first loss in two years) and Brookline (56-33) and Shrewsbury again in the finals, 44-33.

In the title game, Nashua took the lead in the fourth quarter and never looked back.

The team, coached by Stephanie Kane and Aaron Lopez, consisted of returning players Curtis Harris, Nathan Kane, Matt Keisling, Mikey Robbins, John Sullivan, and Joshua Taylor, plus newcomers Jalen Gilmore, Jaden Murphy, Liam Novak, and Cody Rocheleau.

The Nashua School of Gymnasitcs Level 4 team competed in the New Hampshire Sectionals in Bow. Individual results are as follows:

8-year-old division

Megan White had a second-place All Around of 34.525 with an 8.45 on vault, 8.875 on bars, 8.55 on beam and 8.65 on floor.

9-10-year-old division

Cristina Cross had a first place All Around of 37.625 as she scored a 9.175 (third) on vault, 9.40 (third) on bars, 9.5 (first) on beam and 9.55 (second) on floor.

Annika Sinclair had an All Around of 36.95, good for fourth place. She scored an 8.825 (seventh) on vault, 9.25 (tied for fifth) on bars, 9.425 (third) on beam and 9.45 (third) on floor.

Gabbi Gillis had All Around of 36.625 (fifth; she scored a 9.05 (fifth, tie) on vault, 8.875 on bars, 9.00 (eighth) on beam and first place 9.70 on floor.

Sue Mai White posted an All Around of 36.525 (sixth) with a 9.05 (fifth, tie on vault, 9.475 (second) on bars, 8.825 (ninth) on beam and 9.175 (sixth) on floor.

April Koczalka had an All Around of 36.15 (eighth); she scored an 8.975 (sixth) on vault, 8.825 (sixth, tie) on bars, 9.15 (sixth) on beam and 9.20 (fifth, tie) on floor.

Lindsey Campbell had an All Around of 16.90; she scored an 8.90 (ninth) on bars and 8.00 on beam.

11-year-old division

Cloe Rivest took first All Around at 35.45 as she scored a 9.25 (first) on vault, 8.70 (second) on bars, 8.475 (second) on beam and 9.025 (second) on floor.

Nashua Youth Soccer

League registration

Registration for the Nashua Youth Soccer League is open to boys and girls in Nashua and surrounding towns born between Oct. 1, 1994, and Sept. 30, 2008.

Registration can be completed at NashuaYouthSoccer.org. Registration closes on March 25. Registrations received by that date will be guaranteed a spot on a team. Registrations after March 25 may be put on a waiting list.

The season is tentatively scheduled to start on April 12. Coaches and volunteers are needed.

Spring registration for Hudson Youth Baseball is now open. HYB features six divisions (T-ball, Rookie, AA, AAA, Majors, and Babe Ruth Division) for boys and girls ages 4-15.

The Nashua Baseball Academy will hold group training for athletes to prepare for the upcoming spring season. Training is offered for players ages 12 and up.

Practices are twice per week for 90 minutes. The fee is $300 for 12 practices, or $25 for a 90-minute session. Scholarships are available based on need.
