Elm St. wins Division I title

The Elm St. Middle School Boys basketball defeated Merrimack Middle School 48-46 to win the Tri County Division 1 Championship.

After getting off to a slow start the Eagles (14-6) stayed within striking distance led by Richie Mercado’s defense and rebounding and trailed 22-20 at the half.

Merrimack’s Ian Cummings hitting consecutive three pointers to push the lead to ten. With Eagles team captain Alex Amigo on the bench to start the fourth quarter due to injury,reserve guard Andrew Teris hit a big three pointer to change momentum and cut the lead to seven.

Elm Street continued to get stops on the defense end with John Paul Champa coming up with steals, Wilbur Frias grabbing key rebounds, and Josh Reeder blocking shots.

Trailing by 5 with a little less than three minutes to play, Elm Street’s leading scorer on the year Alonzo Linton (18 points a game) took charge. Linton hit a jumper, a 3-pointer to tie, and then on great outlet pass from Mercardo converted a traditional three-point play to put the Eagles in the lead by three.

Mercado would then ice the game with a free throw to put the Eagles up four with 10 seconds left.

Elm St finished with a 14-6 record on the year.

Hollis Brookline wins Division II

Using a tough full court press, the Hollis Brookline Middle School boys basketball team (14-0) completed its first Tri-County undefeated season (14-0) with the Division II title.

The team was coached by Leonid Gershgorin and assistant coach Jason VanCoughnett. Team manager was Frank Pugh.

Players on the roster were: Eighth graders – Patrick Bloniasz, David Bonnett, JB Brackett, Patrick Close, Tyler MacDormand, Matt Simco, Scott VanCoughnett and Ryan Olson. Seventh graders – Kyle Simpson, Evan Simons, Mike Moscatelli and Joey Dias.

World Academy boys win title, girls improve

The World Academy of Nashua saw its boys basketball team go 12-0 and capture the Division IV Tri-County title, 52-34, with just three experienced players on the roster.

The girls team, meanwhile, also had only three experienced players but made it to the tournament, where it lost in overtime.

Nashua Nighthawks

Nighthawks fifth grade boys white recently took two out of three, starting with a 62-24 win over Stoneham White.

Landon Moore had a great night, topping the scoring with 11 points combined with 10 rebounds and two steals. Strong offensive efforts came from all players: Dockrill (10 points), Lynch (nine), Coelho, Dutta and Acorn (eight), Norris (six), and Gauthier (two). Coelho led in assists with five.

The Nighthawks then topped Billerica, 47-38. Top scoring came from Dunning (12), Norris (10), and Dutta (eight). Acorn led the team in steals with five and Norris led in rebounds with eight.

The Nighthawks, however, fell short vs. Wilmington, 40-33. McElliott had a very strong game with eight points, 16 rebounds and four steals. Dutta led all scores with 11 points and five steals

The first-place Nighthawks fifth grade girls kept their winning streak going with a 36-33 win over Lowell and a 45-25 win over Dracut.

In the win over Lowell, Arianna Motivala led the team with 12 points, including two 3-pointers, and 100 percent from the foul line. Julia Gagnon and Kathryn Lynn chipped in with six points each.

There was great defense on the press from Sarah St. Pierre, Jasmine Sylvester and Janessa Lofton. Peyton Ryan, Julia Sullivan and Jaden Smith controlled the boards on both ends. Katie Carr had a fabulous game with four points, great defense and was named Player of the Game.

In a 46-35 win over Amesbury, Arianna Motivala scored 21 points including two 3 pointers. Jaden Smith was awarded Player of the Game, chipping in 12 points.

The Nighthakws seventh grade boys lost to Billerica 51-39, despite Nevan Roy’s 10 points and three boards. Nashua also received solid efforts from Spencer Desrosiers (eight points and two boards), Andrew Penkala (seven points and five boards), Melvin Campbell (five points), and Chase Hart (four points).

Gabe Perrault and Jeff Reza also played well in the loss and contributed with solid defense.

The top-ranked Nighthawks fifth grade boys green team continued its winning streak, beating No. 2 Methuen as it pulled away in the second quarter en route to a 52-33 win.

Nathan Kane led all scorers with a season-high 16 points and nine rebounds. Curtis Harris added 14 points, hitting six of his eight foul shots.

Jalen Gilmore was another high scorer with 11, while among others contributing were John Sullivan with five points and a season and game-high 11 rebounds and Mike Robbins with two points and seven boards.

The Nighthawks fourth grade boys surged ahead to top Lowell Red, 42-34.

Rhett Medling and Michael Rostano lead the way with 10 points each.

Also scoring was Aidan Lynn with six points, Josh Kane and Alex Hulfachor with four each, Jake Taylor with three, Michael Popik and River Hart with two each and David Mullaney with one.

The St. Chris White Jr. Mites enjoyed their first win of the season by overcoming a 6-2 halftime deficit. Leading the way were Abhim Yadav (five points), Will Dodge (four) and Peter Wilson (two).

St. Chris improved to 7-0 on the season, battling back from a 12-10 halftime deficit. St. Chris was led offensively by Trevor Lebreque with 11 points and Sam Dufoe and (four), Chris Prangley (four each).

Defense was the key in this win with Anna Stawasz, Grace Wilson and Aliya Lewis providing the pressure that caused key turnovers. Kristen Coumas (12) was unstoppable on the boards. Natalie Sheehy contribued 10 points, while Sophia Lathram had eight and Jordan Boschetto scored her first basket of the season.

Down three points with eight seconds left, St Chris couldn’t convert on a potential game-tying 3-pointer. Grace Wilson (seven points) was high scorer for St. Chris while Anna Stawasz and Sophia Lathram (11 boards) rebounded well and played well defensively.

The Warriors were led by J.C. Choate with 16 and Lauren Mahaney with eight. points. Eva Gonzales led the Astros with seven.

Lydia Mathson led the Spurs with five points, followed by Renee Hickey and Lauren Belair with four points each.

Shelby Richards scored 11 points to lead the Knights, while Hailey Sullivan and Julianna Martin each contributed six points and Kara Kelliher had four.

Morgan Laforge, Rebecca Zhu, Christyllis Nasella, Madison Sewade, Alyssa Johnson, and Kaylah Ravagno all played great defense to hold off the Rockets who were led by Maddie Griffith’s eight points.

The Jazz rolled to their 10th straight win, led by Steve Larkin’s 16 points and 10 from JJ Fiore. Spencer Lebreque played well for the Celtics.

The Jazz remained unbeaten with their 12th straight as Sam McElliott finished with 13 points. John Sullivan led the Sharks with 14.

The Bullets were led by Vince Priore with 26 points.

Isaac Colon, Sam Charron and David Tejada had strong games for the Knicks who were led in scoring by Matt Thibault with 11, Nick Quirion with eight, and Manny Mendoza with seven. Nick Robbins’ 16 led the Pistons.

The Jazz moved to 14-1 as Alex Koutsas led all scorers with 12 points. The Sonics were led by Andrew Schott’s 10. Nikhil Bala added 10 for the Jazz.

Sam Charron scored nine of the Knicks’ first 11 points, finishing with 14. Ben Sitar, David Tejada and Matt Thibault provided steady rebounding. Vincent Priore led the Bulletts with 19 points.

Free Throw Champions

Eight boys and girls from Nashua ages nine to 14 were named district champions of the 2014 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship and have earned the right to compete at the state competition.

In the boys divisions, the nine-year-old champion was Aidan Lynn, 10-year champion Ethan Teris and the 11-year-old champion was Keith Dow. In the 12-year-old girls division, Kayleigh Eckenrode won while Trevor Kelly won the boys title. Hannah Flaherty and Colin Manning won the girls and boys 13-year-old crowns. Andrew Teris won the 14-year-old boys title.

Each of these winners will now compete in the State Knights of Columbus competition to be held on March 2 at St. Elizabeth Seton in Bedford.

YOUTH HOCKEY

Nashua Panthers rally for tie

Trailing 1-0 in the third period, the Panthers resiliency paid off as Ryan Catalano lit the lamp to tie the game at 1-1, which proved to be the final score against Agawam in a Valley League Hockey game in in Tewksbury, Mass.

Catalano’s goal was assisted by TylerMartin and Anne McIntosh.

Also playing well up front were Dylan Carr, Brayden Goode, Julie McLaughlin, Joey Turner, and Isaac Winsoras Nashua outshot Agawam 19-12.

In goal, Cameron Reinbold was stellar with 11 saves with defensive help from ChristopherGillis, Brenner Plaehn, and MatthewTourangeau.

SNH Cavaliers Squirt White 2

The Cavaliers downed Marblehead 2-1 in Valley League play on goals by Ryan McInnis and Sal Vella. Chase Devins (two) and Sinead Macaraeg had assists.

Defensemen Ty Soule, Jesse Gertz and goalie Jacob Roy played well, Vella’s game-winner coming with 7:20 left in the second period for a 2-0 lead. Marblehead finally beat Roy 7:30 into the final period, but that was it.

Spring registration is now open for Greater Nashua Little League.

Boys and girls ages 5-12 who attend school in Nashua, or live in Nashua, Hudson, or Dunstable, Mass. are eligible to play. Nashua Little League offers T-Ball, Minors, Majors and Challenger divisions.

Registration is only $40 per child with a family cap of $90. Every child who registers will be placed on a team. Registration must be received by March 8. Nashua Baseball Academy Camp

The Nashua Baseball Academy will hold a Presidents Day Baseball Camp on Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 265 Proctor Hill Rd. in Hollis for ages 8-14.

Features include hitting instruction, fielding, pitching and catching. The camp is open to the public. It is $50 for the day and $35 for members ($25 if you bring a non-member).

The Nashua Baseball Academy will hold group training for athletes to prepare for the upcoming spring season. Training is offered in age brackets 12 and under and 13 and older.

Practices are twice per week for one-and-a-half hours and fundamentals and mechanics are covered in a team like setting. Boys are taught a skill, involved in repetitive exercises to practice the skill and then compete in fun games to test and improve skills.

Knights, Devils openings

The New Hampshire Knights and New Hampshire Diamond Devils have a few openings to fill out 2014 rosters.

The programs offer off season training, a 30 game schedule, travel tournaments and complete uniforms including jacket and batting helmet. The 12-U Diamond Devils are the Southern New Hampshire All Stars and will be competing in Cooperstown, N.Y., in August.

Umpires needed

The Nashua Baseball Umpires Association is looking for additional umpires for the Spring 2014 baseball season. Experience is not necessary as the NBUA will train all candidates, as young as 12 years old.
