Celtics 67, Jets 37

The Celtics won their fourth straight game downing the Jets. Dylan Gamache led all scorers with 15 points, followed by Yandel Mateo with 14, and Conrad Coutu had all eight of his in the fourth quarter.

Blazers 81, Kings 45

The Blazers were led by Tyler Bernard’s 33 points, while Mike Lentz added 21 and Dominick Paladino dropped in seven. The Kings played a tough game on both ends of the floor with Kevin O’Brien netting eight points.

Blazers 95, Suns 49

The Blazers played a solid game led by five players in double digits, Nnaji Obinelo who dropped a season high 10 points. Jordan Donnelly added 19, and Tyler Bernard 22. The Suns were led by Mike Pelletier’s 11 points.

Blazers 83, Colts 74

Jack Dinsmore grabbed numerous rebounds and dropped 24 points, while Tyler Bernard had a game high 29 points for the Blazers. The Colts had strong efforts by Anthony Martin’s 18 points, and Cal O’Rourke’s 23.

Girls Biddy

Spurs 32, Panthers 28

Janessa Lofton had 15 points while Lydia Matheson had eight and Lauren Belair added six.

Spurs 28, Bulls 20

Belair and Renee Hickey each scored six points, while Lofton, Hannah Casey and Matheson added four apiece.

Rockets 27, Hawks 17

The Rockets played solid defense led by Olivia Baldassaro and Caitlyn Olsen. They had eight players score led by Brigette Keavey (seven), Caitlyn Olsen, Olivia Baldassaro and Carly Fryatt (four each) and Catherine Covert, Maddie Griffiths, Gwen Fabri and Iruka Obinelo (two apiece).

Girls Junior Biddy

Panthers 10, Astros 9

Olivia Johnson and Morgan Gillis led the winners with four points apiece. Yalinet Ortiz contributed two.

Panthers 22, Celtics 8

Panther points were scored by Caroline Sullivan (two), Jordan Fariz (two), Lyndsey Hovey (two), Rachel Medieros (four), Gillis (four), and leading all scorers was Johnson (six). Scoring her first basket of the season was Caroline Rider while great defense came from Avery Marchand, Cameron Iaquinta, Laney Treen, Mia Flegal, and Olivia Tall.

Warriors 22, Celtics 12

The Warriors lead by J.C. Choate with 16 points and Schama Sako with 4 points. Celtics were lead by Maeue with six points.

Boys Junior Biddy

Bulldogs 29, Celtics 20

Oscar Trujillo led the Bulldogs with 10 points, followed by Brandon Metivier (nine), Dean Adams (six), and Eli Meesig and Luis Vargas (two each). Ian Mack, AJ Mack, Lee Hill, Cody Necco, Keith O’Donnell, and Jaxon Chambers played well defensively.

Boys Biddy

Cougars 29, Thunder 19

Adam Gosselin scored 10 points and Alex Fortier five to lead the Cougars. Tyler Armeen and Avian Carrillo followed with four apiece while Glen Preston, Luis Ortiz, and Rafael Garcia each scored two. Ben Dufrense led the Thunder with seven points and Matt Rittenberg added five.

Cavaliers 50, Bullets 41

Twenty different players scored as the Cavs were led by Josh Lentz with 20, with 15 coming in the final quarter and a half. Also helping offensively were Stav Alkalay , Mason Matylewski, Gavin Belesca, Rishi Patel, Miles Rios, Luis Maldonado, Travis Holbrook, and Nathan Brodeur. The Bullets were led by Vincent Priore, Manav Botadra, while also helping out offensively were Colton Welch, Brendon Frost, and Colby Temro. The Cavs’ Miles Rios played well defensively.

Cavaliers 50, Lancers 45

Lentz led the Cavs with with 17 followed by Matylewski (11), The Lancers were led by Chris Inzerillo with 16 and Devin Bracetty wih 11.

Cavaliers 38, Bucks 30

Lentz led the winners with 14 while Tyler Monday had 10 for the Bucks, who also got help from Anubhav Darin, Ryan Santoro , Zach Hureau, Amos Roche, Liam Bourque, and Alex Damian.

Jr. Mites (grades 3-4)

St. Christopher Green 18, St. Joseph – 11

The St. Chris Green Jr. Mites benefited from a 12 point third quarter to improve to 5-0 on the season. With a game high of eight points, Bobby Canaway led the Husky offensive effort. Sam Dufoe and Chris Prangley each contributed four points. Faith Sutton, Kate Daley and Carlie Dufoe were strong defensively for St. Chris.

Girls/Mites (grades 5-6)

St. Christopher 32, Infant Jesus 20

Natalie Sheehy led all scorers for St. Chris with ten points. Kirsten McIntire contributed nine points of her own, while Kristen Coumas (six), Anna Stawasz (three), Grace Wilson (two) and Ava Therrien (two) put points on the board for St. Chris.

Nicole Yeaton and Aliya Lewis were tenacious on defense, causing a number of turnovers. Jordan Boschetto and Claire LaPlante showed great hustle for the Huskies. St Chris is now 3-2 on the season.

Boys/Mites (grades 5-6)

St. Christopher Green 36, St. Joseph 17

Despite St. Joseph’s impressive 3-pointers from outside, St. Christopher came away with the win, improving to 5-2 on the season. Toby Therrien of St. Chris returned from an injury with eight points and two rebounds. Matt Thibault was high scorer for St. Chris with 11 points. Alex Nicholas led the Huskies in rebounds with five.

Nighthawks basketball

Fifth Grade Green win two

The 12-0 Nighthawks continued their winning streak, defeating Westford 50-26 and Windham 61-36.

The Nighthawks overcame a slow start against Westford with a strong second half. Strong performances came from Nathan Kane (10 points), Michael Robbins and Jalen Gilmore (nine each), Jaden Murphy (eight), John Sullivan and Matt Keisling (five points each), and Curtis Harris and Cody Rocheleau (two apiece.).

In the team’s second game, the Nighthawks had close to 50 rebounds, with Liam Novak’s 11. Robbins, Kane, Sullivan, Taylor, Harris, and Gilmore each pulled down at least four rebounds apiece. Offensively, each member of the team contributed, beginning with a Robbins hit a 3-pointer in the opening minute.

Harris was high-scorer with 14 points. Also scoring for the Nighthawks were Robbins (10), Sullivan (eight), Gilmore (six), Keisling (six), Kane (five), Rocheleau (four), Novak (four), Murphy (two), and Joshua Taylor (two). Other highlights are Gilmore’s five steals, Kane’s blocked shots, and numerous assists from Harris, Robbins, and Gilmore.

Nighthawks Fifth Grade Boys White

The Nighthawks fall to Reading Black, 34-28.

Scoring came from Daniel Dockrill, Connor Dunning, Sam McElliott, Sid Dutta and Stephen Norris. Coming off the bench and contributing with some strong rebounding were Nick Drew and Landon Moore. Also contributing defensively, including steals and blocked shots, were Geoffrey Lynch, Kyle Gauthier, Isaac Acorn and Sebastian Coelho.

Nighthawks Seventh Grade Boys

The Nighthawks lost to North Andover, Mass. 51-20. Nashua was led offensively by Nevan Roy and Andrew Penkala with four points each. The Hawks also received points from Casey McNally and Stephen McLendon with three points each; and Chase Hart, Matt Wall, and Melvin Campbell with two each. Gabe Perrault, Jeff Reza and Spencer Desrosiers played well in the loss.

Nashua Nighthawks Seventh Grade Girls

The Nighthawks seventh grade girls beat Billerica 46-18 over the weekend. Eight of the ten players scored. Jasmine Sylvester led all scorers with 14 points including three 3-pointers. Jaden Smith and Arianna Motivala chipped eight points each while Julia Gagnon had six points. Defensively the Nighthawks caused numerous turnovers while Peyton Ryan had several assists.

Janessa Lofton was awarded Player of the Game as she played aggressive defense and had a handful of rebounds at both ends.

The next day, the seventh grade Lady Nighthawks used a pressing defense to knock off previously undefeated Salem.

Seven of ten Nashua Players scored. Arianna Motivala was awarded player of the game with her tough defense and team high 12 points. Also contributing to the offense was Jaden Smith (nine points), Jasmine Sylvester (eight), and Peyton Ryan six points. Julia Gagnon, Jasmine Sylvester and Katie Carr had a great defensive game.

Baseball

Greater Nashua Little League

Spring registration for the Greater Nashua Little League, Nashua’s only “Official Little League,” is now open. GNLL features Major, Minor, Farm and T-Ball divisions for boys and girls age 5-12 who reside in Nashua, Hudson and Dunstable, Mass.

GNLL is the only league in town eligible to play in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. The league offers fall ball.

The 2014 GNLL board announced that the city has assigned Memorial Veteran’s Park as part of its fields this year. Three fields next to and in front of The Boys & Girls Club of Nashua (formerly known as the West LL fields) are also used.

Tryouts are held at Play Ball on Congress St. in Nashua on Feb. 9 and March 2.

Knights, Devils baseball openings

The New Hampshire Knights and New Hampshire Diamond Devils have a few openings to fill out 2014 rosters.

The programs offer off season training, a 30 game schedule, travel tournaments and complete uniforms including jacket and batting helmet. The 12-U Diamond Devils are the Southern New Hampshire All Stars and will be competing in Cooperstown, N.Y. in August.

The 12U Diamond Devils, 13U NH Knights and 14U NH Knights have openings for accomplished players with All Star experience that can play at least two positions. The teams will not conflict with school ball or local recreation programs. Features of the program include professional coaches, video analysis, strength and conditioning, small roster sizes and a flexible schedule. Tryouts are ongoing. Nashua Baseball Academy

The Nashua Baseball Academy will hold group training for athletes to prepare for the upcoming spring season. Training is offered in age brackets 12 and under and 13 and older.

Practices are twice per week for one-and-a-half hours and fundamentals and mechanics are covered in a team like setting. Boys are taught a skill, involved in repetitive exercises to practice the skill and then compete in fun games to test and improve skills.

The fee is $300 for 12 practices, or $25 for a one-and-a-half hour session and scholarships are available based on need. Nashua School of Gymnastics third

The Nashua School of Gymnastics Level 6, 9 & 10 teams competed at the Manhattan Classic Invitational, with the Level 6 team taking third 3rd place with a score of 108.775. Individual results as follows:

Level 6 (Junior A Age Division)

Corey Foster had an All Around of 34.65 (eighth); she scored an 8.80 on vault, 8.75 (fifth) on bars, 7.90 on beam and 9.20 (fifth) on floor.

Level 6 (Junior B Age Division)

Devon Rosier had an All Around score of 36.025 (seventh); she scored a 9.30 (second, tied) on vault, 8.40 on bars, 8.80 (seventh) on beam and 9.525 (first) on floor.

Emily Colburn had an All Around of 35.55 (eighth); she scored an 8.85 on vault, 8.45 on bars, 9.25 (second) on beam and 9.00 on floor.

Jenna Hatula posted an All Around score of 33.75 with an 8.60 on vault, 7.95 on bars, 8.10 on beam and 9.10 (eighth) on floor.

Abbey Catalano had an All Around total of 33.40 that included an 8.50 on vault, 7.70 on bars, 8.60 on beam and 8.60 on floor.

Hannah Speight finished with an All Around tally of 33.20 with an 8.20 on vault, 7.85 on bars, 7.95 on beam and 9.20 (fifth) on floor.

Level 6 (Senior A Division)

Kyra Rivest had a second place All Around of 35.65 with a 9.30 (second) on vault, 8.50 (tied for third) on bars, 8.55 (seventh) on beam and 9.30 (fourth) on floor.

Olivia Bouthot had an All Around score of 35.60 (third); she scored an 8.95 on vault, 8.95 (first) on bars, 8.575 (sixth) on beam and 9.125 (seventh) on floor.

Reece Greenleaf had an All Around score of 35.15 (fourth); she scored a 9.15 (third) on vault, 8.50 (tied for third) on bars, 8.625 (fourth) on beam and 8.85 on floor.

Emmie White had an All Around score of 34.975 (6th); she scored a 9.05 (sixth) on vault, 8.45 (fifth) on bars, 8.15 on beam and 9.325 (third) on floor.

Madelyn Campano had a seventh place All Around score of 34.725 (seventh); she scored a 9.00 (seventh) on vault, 8.15 (seventh) on bars, 8.40 (eighth) on beam and 9.175 (fifth,tied) on floor.

Abby Fitzpatrick posted an All Around Score of 33.35 with an 8.95 on vault, 7.85 on bars, 7.55 on beam and 9.00 (eighth) on floor.

Lexi Sarro totaled an All Around of 32.375 with an 8.55 on vault, 7.90 on bars, 6.75 on beam and 9.175 (tied for fifth) on floor.

Level 9 (Junior Division)

Isabel Pearson had an All Around of 30.275 with a 7.65 on vault, 6.70 on bars, 7.40 on beam and 8.525 on floor.

Level 10 (Senior Division)

Megan Middlemiss had a ninth place All Around of 29.50. She scored an 8.25 on vault, 5.00 on bars, 8.40 on beam and 7.85 on floor.

Hockey

Cavaliers Squirt 2 White split pair

The Cavaliers Squirt 2 White team defeated the Lynn Comets 5-1 but later suffered a 5-4 loss in a rematch against the Seacoast Spartans.

In the first game against Lynn, both the Cavs and Comets started each period strong defensively. For the Cavs, Sinead Macaraeg and Michael Spinazzola controlled the puck. With only five minutes left in the first period, Sal Vella managed to break away from the Comet and drive a rebound of a strong shot from Ryan McInnis into the back of the net.

The Comets roared right back though just a minute later on a Connor Stevens goal assisted by Jaxon Thomas. Later,, Ty Soule along with Vella capitalized on a 2-on-1 when Vella sent a centering pass through the crease to Soule who stuffed it in.

With 2:18 left in the second period, Jesse Gertz got an off balance bouncing shot past the goaltender. Gertz also assisted Matt Choate with 1:10 left in the third period. The Cavaliers added a fifth goal with 40 seconds left in the game with Chase Devins assisting Ty Soule.

The second game was a rematch with the top seeded Seacoast Spartans. Cavs goalie Ryan McInnis was able to keep the Spartans at bay for the majority of the first period, but they managed to sneak one by him with 1:38 left in the period. The Cavs ended the period strong as well with Soule hitting Vella in stride for a breakaway goal with just 17 seconds remaining.

The Cavaliers momentum continued into the second with the offensive line of Vella, Soule and Kevin Sullivan putting the pressure on. With 3:02 left in the period, Vella put a shot on net which was deflected by Sullivan, who eventually drove a rebound into the back of the net.

The third period turned into a shootout. Within a three minute span, Evan Doughty scored two goals, which the Spartans promptly answered with three of their own.

The Spartans managed to get a bouncing puck past McInnis with just over three minutes remaining for the game-winner. With two minutes of constant pressure thanks to an extra skater, Chase Devins and Jacob Roy managed to ring the post with hard shots, but no goals.

Cavs Pee Wees go 1-0-1

In Valley League Youth Hockey action the Southern NH Cavaliers picked up a win and a tie, the latter coming vs. Waltham, 5-5.

The Cavs scoring was led by Max Sears and Chris Haley each notching a pair of goals, with Austin Ciszek, adding the other goal. The locals’ defense of Ruthvik Yenisetti, Sean Kelly, Nic Miller and goalies Ben Goolsby and Nick Hall thwarted Waltham’s chances.

The Cavs later turned in one of their best performances of the season in a 7-3 win over Stoneham.

The forward lines Joe Roth/Chris Haley/Austin Ciszek and Anthony Viola/TJ Vitullo/Isaac Rogers dominated offensively. Roth and Haley each notched a pair of goals with Rogers, Ciszek and Vitullo adding a goal apiece.

Goalies Hall and Goolsby were outstanding, while Cavs defensemen Damien Barahona, Miller and Kelly played well.

Nashua Panthers

Panthers drop two

A much improved Panthers team fell 5-4 at the hands of Triton in a Valley League Hockey game at Hudson’s Cyclones Arena.

The line of Tyler Martin (two goals, assist), Brayden Goode (goal, assist) and Isaac Winsor (two assists) was on fire to start the game. The trio scored three times in the first 10 minutes to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead.

Martin scored the first two goals of the game two minutes apart. Goode and Winsor assisted on the first goal and Winsor and Brenner Plaehn assisted on the second goal.

Goode made it 3-0 on a great pass from Martin one-timing the goal in front of the net.

But, Triton responded with five straight goals to make it 5-3 in the third period. The Panthers did not roll over as Joey Turner turned on the jets with a great backhand goal assisted by Julie McLaughlin. The Panthers kept surging, led by Turner, but eventually fell just short.

Later, the Panthers fell to Keene 8-2 at Skate 3 in Tyngsborough, Mass. in a Granite State League clash.

Dylan Carr scored the first goal of the game for Nashua assisted by McLaughlin and Anne McIntosh. Martin scored the second goal assisted by Winsor and Matthew Tourangeau.

In a rematch the next day on the road, the Panthers fell to Keene 4-1, despite trailing just 2-1 entering the third period.

Panthers goalie Cameron Reinbold kept Nashua in the game with 23 saves. Defensively the foursome of Christopher Gillis, Pleahn, Tourangeau and Turner played well.

Nashua Panthers fundraiser

Olympian Dave Silk to appear in Nashua

The Nashua Panthers are inviting people to watch the movie “Miracle” at Chunky’s in Nashua, and after the movie fans will have a chance to meet Dave Silk, who is portrayed in the movie “Miracle” and was a member of the 1980 US Gold Medal Hockey Team that won the Gold Medal and upset the Russians along the way.

All money raised will benefit the Nashua Panthers Squirt A team that is hoping to play in a youth hockey tournament in Lake Placid, N.Y. from March 13-16.

Tickets to the event are $20 and include an 8×10 “Miracle” photo, autograph and photo opportunity plus the chance to participate in a question and answer session with Silk after the movie.

Only 150 tickets will be available to ensure intimacy and time constraints. There will also be a silent auction and raffle.

Skeffington Scholarship Fund election

A general election for the Peter J Skeffington Scholarship Fund, Inc. Board of Directors will be held on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Merrimack Youth Association Building on Daniel Webster Highway in Merrimack.

Requirements for eligibility are you must have been, or are currently participating as a coach, manager, official or Board of Director member with the Merrimack Youth Association programs.
