Nashua Elks and 2014 State Elks Southwest District Hoop Shoot Champions, 13-year-old Tilak Patel, 9-year-old Grace Cardin and 8-year-old Trevor Labrecque will travel to Portsmouth next weekend to compete in the New Hampshire State Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Championship.

Two years ago, Patel went all the way to compete in the Elks National Elks Hoop Shoot Finals in Springfield, Mass., finishing sixth in the 11-year-old division.

Registration and the drawing of shooting positions will be held on Saturday, followed by a pizza and pool party and there will be a “Breakfast of Champions” on Sunday, followed by the competition at the Connie Bean Community Center at 9:30 a.m. An awards dinner will be held that night.

As in all levels of competition, each boy and girl in the six respective age divisions will shoot 25 free throws for score with five extra tiebreakers as needed. The six New Hampshire champions will then go on to the New England Regional Hoop Shoot contest, which will be held in Portland, Maine, on March 22. Winners of the 12 Regional contests will compete in the National Finals in April.

NASHUA NIGHTHAWKS

Seventh Grade goes 2-2 in tourney

The Seventh Grade Nighthawks went 2-2 in the MLK Hudson Tournament, and went 2-2, with victories over Londonderry and Hudson.

In the opening game the Nighthawks defeated Londonderry 57-3 behind Casey McNally’s 12 points and five rebounds. Nashua also received solid games from Spencer Desrosiers (nine points), Chase Hart (eight points), Andrew Penkala and Stephen McLendon (seven apiece). The Nighthawks also received points from Melvin Campbell (six), Gabe Perrault (three points), Matt Wall (three), and Jeff Reza (two ). Tyler Downing collected two assists before leaving the game with an injury.

The Nighthawks dropped the second game to Bedford 53-41. Nashua was led offensively by Penkala, who scored 14 points, grabbed eight boards, dished two assists and had a steal. Also playing well were Hart (13 points), Reza (five) points), and Wall (four). Perrault and Desrosiers scored two points each, and Campbell and McLendon each chipped in with one. McNally played well and grabbed four boards and dished two assists.

The Nighthawks dropped the third game to Methuen 40-24. Nashua was led offensively by Penkala who scored nine points, grabbed five boards, and added an assist. Also leading the Hawks was Matt Wall with eight points, two boards, and three assists. The Nighthawks got other scoring efforts from Perrault (three points), and McNally and McLendon (two apiece). Also playing well the Hawks were Hart, Reza, Desrosiers, and Campbell.

The Nighthawks finished the tournament with a 40-37 victory over host Hudson. Nashua was led offensively by Chase Hart, with 11 points, four boards, two steals, two assists, and one block. The Nighthawks also received very solid performances from Penkala (eight points, eight boards) and McLendon (eight points).

Rounding out the scoring for the Hawks were Perrault (five), Wall (four), McNally (three), and Desrosiers (one). Nashua also received good games from Reza and Campbell.

Fifth Grade White bow in semis

The Nashua Nighthawks Fifth Grade White Team finished second in the East Division of the Hudson Recreation Department’s MLK Basketball Tournament. Nashua topped Pelham 32-26, lost to Hudson 27-21, and fell to Stratham in the semis 31-16, despite trailing by only five early in the second half.

Scoring throughout the tourney was led by Sam McElliott, Stephen Norris and Connor Dunning. Sid Dutta, Daniel Dockrill, Nick Drew, Isaac Acorn, Landon Moore, Kyle Gauthier, Sebastian Coelho and Jeffrey Lynch all played well. Norris was selected to the All-Tournament Team.

NASHUA BIDDY BASKETBALL

Boys Jr. Biddy

Nuggets 30, Cougars 21

The Nuggetts, led by Sri Korandia and Ryan Vogel, played well defensively. Leading scorers were Julian Gonzalez (eight points) and Shreyas Pedda with a season high six points.

Nuggets 33, Stars 25

Aidan Sullivan was outstanding with 10 points and several steals. Ryan Vogel has six points, and many key rebounds. The Stars played tough defense, and came within two points in the third quarter.

Bulldogs 25, Cougars 21

Dean Adams led scoring with 10 points, while Luis Vargas had five, Brandon Metivier and Oscar Trujillo had four each and AJ Mack had a basket to round it out. Ian Mack, Jaxon Chambers, Lee Hill, Eli Meesig, Keith O’Donnell, Tyler Rollo, Dylan McDermott, and Cody Necco showed hustle and played well defensively.

Isaiah Hedquist and Ryan Salemi had great games for the Cougars.

Boys Biddy

Sharks 42, Cougars 37; Sharks 35, Lakers 34

There were big games by Sharks Vishik Bhalla, Johnny Sullivan, Jaden Murphy, Zack Gauthier, Peyton Adams, Nikhil Prasad, Timmy Yang, Kyle Gauthier, Sam Fletcher, and Chris Keefe.

Jazz 41, Saints 18

The Jazz had 10 different players score with Gabe Perralt leading all players with 11 points. Steve Larkin chipped in with eight points and Alex Koutsas added six more for the Jazz.

Jazz 42, Trotters 33

The Jazz stayed undefeated at 9-0 with a hard fought win. Sam McElliott led all scorers with 20 points for the Jazz. Chase Nickerson led the Totters with 14 points. Nik Bhalla and Kevin Maldanado played excellent defense for the Jazz.

Bullets 38, Wildcats 16

The Bullets were led by Vinnie Priore with 18 points and Manav Botadra with 12. The Wildcats were led by Dhruv with six.

Bantam

Blazers 60, Bruins 40

The Blazers were led by Logan Mcintosh, who played outstanding defense while netting 12 points. Myles Johnson added 15 while Tim Brown had a team high 11 points for the Bruins.

Resurrection Mites Black 30, Immaculate C. 22

Resurrection overcame a first half deficit, led defensively by Ryan Stack and offensively by Josh Lentz (12 points), Connor Dunning (10), and Liam Novak (six). IC was led by JR Douglas (12 points) and Jake Smith (five).

SWIMMING

Executive Swim Club finishes fifth

Several local swimmers helped the Manchester-based Executive Swim Club finish fifth in the New England Senior Championships in Worcester, Mass, the largest meet in New England held in short course yards.

Matthew Grauslys, fresh off the Junior Nationals, set a New England record in winning the 100 Butterfly in 48.59. He also won the 200 butterfly (1:47.19) and 1000 freestyle (9:28.72), and swam in the top eight in the 500 freestyle (4:36.93), 200 backstroke (1:51.02), and 200 individual medley (1:52.95) to finish third in the highpoint standings.

Molly Fitzpatrick of Bedford and the Derryfield School swam to second place in the 200 breaststroke. Her time of 2:14.64 also qualifies her to compete in the Junior Nationals this summer held in Irvine, CA. She also swam to third place in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.23), and made the finals in the 200 freestyle (1:54.77) and 200 individual medley (2:06.98).

Elliot Chun of Bedford and Joe Moleski of Bishop Guertin swam in two championship finals. Chun,the 100 and 200 breaststrokes (58.72 and 2:10.79) and Moleski in the 50 (21.46) and 100 (47.26) freestyles. Moleski’s 100 fackstroke time of 53.49 also qualified for finals.

Natalie Giraldi of Bedford swam in the championship final of the 100 breaststroke, finishing in sixth in 1:06.38. Alex Bedard of Amherst swam in the championship final of the 100 Breaststroke, swimming a 59.91. He also swam best times in the 100 backstroke (55.36) and 200 breaststroke (2:16.61).

Andrew Allen, 14, competed in seven events for the Executive. He qualified for North Sectionals in both the 50 freestyle (22.43)and 100 butterfly (53.61), and swam best times in the 200 freestyle (1:46.79) and 200 individual medley (2:01.73).

Grant Levasseur of Litchfield competed in the finals of the 100 butterfly (52.77) as well as competing in the 200 butterfly (2:01.16), and the 100 (54.83) and 200 (1:58.78) backstrokes. Grant Drukker of Bedford qualified for Sectionals in the 100 butterfly (53.85) as well as swam best times in the 100 Breaststroke (1:03.50), 50 (23.20) and 100 (49.33) Freestyles. Matthew Falcone of Hollis competed in two finals in both breaststroke events. His 100 time(1:01.04) and 200 (2:13.32) were personal bests, as well as his 100 backstroke (58.01).

Andreas Harb of Derry swam a 55.01 in the 100 backstroke, qualifying for Sectionals, and swam two other best times in the 50 Freestyle (23.40) and 200 backstroke (2:01.45). Greg Levine of Bedford swam three personal bests in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes (1:04.56, 2:17.89) and 500 Freestyle (4:58.92).

Ana Milosavljevic of Londonderry swam a best time in the 50 Freestyle (25.08). Morgan Stickney of bedford competed in the Championship final of the 1650 free, as well as competed in the 200, 500, and 1000 freestyle events.

Nina Levine of Bedford competed in the 100 Butterfly (1:01.72) as did Mackenzie Donovan in the 50 freestyle (26.80).

Levasseur, Chun, Grauslys, and Moleski swam to a third place finish in the 400 Medley Relay. Their time of 3:29.46 is just shy of the Junior National time standard. Allen, Drukker, Grauslys, and Moleski finished in the top six for the 400 and 800 freestyle Relays. Milosavljevic, Fitzpatrick, Levine, and Giraldi scored points in the Women’s 400 Medley Relay, as did the team of Bedard, Levasseur, Levine, and Chun in the Men’s 800 Freestyle Relay.

HOCKEY

Plymouth edges Nashua Panthers

Dylan Carr and Tyler Martin each scored two goals apiece, but despite a strong start the Nashua Panthers were nipped 6-5 late to visiting Plymouth at Skate 3 in Tyngsborough, Mass.

Trailing 5-3, Plymouth rallied with three third period goals for the win. Julie McLaughlin added Nashua’s other goal. Ryan Catalano and Brayden Goode each recorded two assists and Anne McIntosh added another assist.

In goal, Cameron Reinbold made 22 saves to help keep the game close.

Nashua’s Isaac Winsor created several scoring opportunities and defensively the foursome of Christopher Gillis, Brenner Plaehn, Matthew Tourangeau and Joey Turner played well.

Nashua jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to Carr who on his first goal stole a pass and walked in, beating the Plymouth goalie. Carr scored again a minute later a off a nice backhand pass by Goode, who won a corner battle for the puck.

Nashua finished off a strong first period as McLaughlin scored on a great shot to give Nashua a 3-1 lead.

In the second period, Martin continued the strong start for Nashua increasing the lead to 4-1 on a goal assisted by Catalano. Soon after, Plymouth responded with the next two goals to make it 4-3.

Martin once again ended the Plymouth surge with a rebound goal, making it 5-3 late in the second period, assisted by Catalano and Goode.

Cavaliers II White loses its first

The Cavaliers Squirt 2 White team suffered a 4-1 loss at the hands of the Seacoast Spartans.

The Cavaliers started the first period strong with the offensive line of Ty Soule, Ryan McInnis and Sal Vella working together to create several two-on-one opportunities in the offensive zone, but were thwarted by the Spartans goalie.

With four minutes into the period, Oscar Whitcomb of the Spartans managed to make a pair of quick moves to break free of the Cavaliers defense. Defenseman Matt Choate managed to spin around and get a stick on the puck trying to break up the play, but it managed to tumble over the glove of goaltender Jacob Roy into the back of the net.

The Cavaliers managed to charge right back though 1:30 later when Chase Devins bounced a pass off the boards to center Jesse Gertz who used his speed to outrun the Spartan defense. Gertz scored with a quick shot gloveside.

With five minutes left in the period Ryan McInnis managed to tip a deflected shot from Sal Vella past the Spartan goaltender, but the potential score was negated by a high sticking call.

Strong defensive play on both sides of the puck kept both teams scoreless for the majority of the second period. With three minutes left in the second period though Riley Adams scored for the Spartans on a centering pass from Jeremy Conlin.

The Cavaliers managed to keep the game within striking distance for most of the third period while Evan Doughty, Soule and Vella managed to put several good shots on the Spartan goaltender. With 4:21 left in the game, Seacoast’s speedy Will Maher intercepted a Cavalier centering pass, stick handled his way through the Cavs defenders and put the puck just out of reach of Roy.

The Cavs pulled Roy with two minutes left to add an extra attacker on a Spartan power play trying to bring the game within reach. Bryson Vater of the Spartans managed to clear the puck out of their defensive zone with just 26 seconds left to Maher who added the empty net insurance goal.

Cristina Cross had an All Around of 37.15 (first place); she scored a 9.20 (fourth) on vault, 9.35 (tied second) on bars, 9.40 (first) on beam and 9.20 (tied first) on floor.

April Koczalka had an All Around of 36.40, tied for second. She scored a 9.25 (third) on vault, 8.80 on bars, 9.30 (tied for second) on beam and 9.05 (tied fourth) on floor.

Annika Sinclair had an All Around of 36.40, tying for second. She was tops on vault at 9.35, had an 8.70 on bars, 9.25 (third) on beam and 9.10 (tied for third) on floor.

Sue Mai White had a fourth place All Around of 36.00 with a 9.15 (fifth) on vault, 9.15 (tied fifth) on bars, 8.50 on beam and 9.20 (tied first) on floor.

Lindsey Campbell had an All Around of 35.70 with a 9.30 (second) on vault, 8.80 on bars, 8.70 on beam and 8.90 (tied for sixth) on floor.

NE Future Stars Hockey registration

The New England Future Stars will be holding tryouts for the summer season next week with sessions for the Squirt, Peewee and Bantam Boston Brahmas, South Middlesex Coyotes and Raynham Raiders getting under way.

Online registration with a discount is available until the day prior to each tryout.

Tryouts for the Boston Brahmas will be held on Monday at Jim Roche Arena in West Roxbury, Mass, with Squirts at 5:30 p.m., PeWees at 6:40, Bantams at 7:50 p.m. The south Middlesex Coyotes will be held also on Monday at the Burlington (Mass.) Ice Palace with Squirts at 5:40 p.m., PeeWees at 6:50 p.m. and Bantams at 8 p.m.
