The Granite State Flash had 49 youth runners compete with over 3,000 runners in the USA Track & Field’s 2013 Junior Olympics Cross Country National Championships at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio.

The 7-8 Girls team finished a strong third place out of seven teams and just 20 points out of the win. And the 9-10 Boys team finished second place out of 24 teams. They had also finished second at Regionals.

Here are the local finishers:

Age 7-8 Girls 2 K (bronze medal): Masho Primmer (20, 8:31, Amherst), Ashereka Primmer (80, 9:26, Amherst), Kylie Donoghue (109, 9:42, Amherst).

Age 9-10 Girls 3K (15th place): Sophia Lunati (154, 13:21, Amherst).

Age 9-10 Boys 3K (silver medal): Mason Silk (20, 11:12, Amherst); Ryan Fischer (40, 11:37, Merrimack)

Age 11-12 Girls 3K : A-Team (fourth) – Caroline Fischer (4th, 10:53, Merrimack), Taylor Clark (55, 11:30, Amherst).

Age 13-14 Girls 4K (fourth): Bailey Carillo (77, 15:48, Merrimack); Grace Corbett, 113, 16:06, Merrimack); Rebecca Ntengeri (178, 16:28, Nashua); Elise Lambert (204, 16:40, Amherst).

Age 15-16 Girls 5K: Heidi Ntengeri (17th, 19:43, Nashua).

Jazz 48, Royals 38

The defending champion Jazz roll to their eighth straight win dating back to last season behind Sam McElliott and Drevin Richard. Stephen Mclendon led all Royals scorers with 23 points and Sam Barisano was solid defensively.

Jazz 28, Braves 27 (OT)

Gabe Perralt and J.J. Fiore played well, while the Braves were led by game high scorer Stephen Martin (eight points) and defensively by Jamie Bodwell. Starring defensively for the Jazz were Kevin Maldanado and Nik Bhalla.

Jazz 23, Knicks 15

The defensive-minded Jazz were led in scoring by Alec Smolski (six), Estevan Arango (five), Griffin Johnson and Hrishi Joshi (four each). Tyler Zwicker (10) and Jack Peters (four) led the Knicks.

Jazz 39, Cougars 19

The Jazz held off the Cougars for their second win as Steve Larkin led all scorers with 11 points. The Cougars were led by Brackett and Armeen with eight and five points respectively. Maldanado, Sam McElliott and Alex Koutsas (six apiece) helped the Jazz.

Jazz 39, Lakers 23

The defending city champion Jazz opened the season with a win as Gabe Perralt led all scorers with eight points. Kevin Maldanado and Alex Koutsas chipped in with six while Larkin and Nik Bhalla rebounded well. For the Lakers, Rylan Brito and Seth Bridge played well.

Cougars 37, Braves 35

The Cougars were paced by Nevan Roy with 11 points, Sid Dutta (eight), Adam Gosselin and Tyler Armeen (four each)/ Alex Fortier, Luis Ortiz, Avian Carrillo and Garrett Roe all contributed. Jack Brackett was force defensively and on the boards.

Leading the Braves were Rajit Khanna with 10 points, Stefan Martin (seven) and Alex Ortiz (six). Jordan Bodwell played well and scored six points. Rory Curran and Tom Cullerton also scored.

Nationals 58, Sonics 34

The Nationals were led in scoring by Angelo Soto (16), Andres Hulfachor (12), and Dallas Kastens (10). Ahmil Manautou, Tanner Plourde, James Liang and Jack Vogel also scored. Plourde was exceptional on defense, leading a team effort. The Sonics were led in scoring by Colin Manning (12) and Kaiden Giantsis (six).

Sharks 49, Celtics 6

Thirteen players scored led by Nikhil Prasad, Jaden Murphy, Chris Keefe, and Sam Fletcher with six each.

Johnny Sullivan, Vishik Bhalla, Kyle Gauthier, and Adam Akel added four apiece. Josh Taylor, Zack Gauthier, Peyton Adams, Timmy Yang, and Cody Flemming also scored while Zack Plourde and Damien Peterson chipped in solid defense.

Nationals 39, Sharks 13

Soto had 12 to lead the winners, while Andres Hulfachor (10), Dallas Kastens and Ahmil Manautou helped out. Plourde again played well defensively while the Sharks were led by Chris Keefe (six points) and Zach Gauthier (five).

Nuggets 26, Sharks 6

The Nuggets, led in scoring by Rhett Medling (eight), Julian Gonzalez (six), and Sean Sullivan (four), defended and rebounded well.

Nuggets 36, Bulldogs 13

Aidan Sullivan led the winners with several steals and 10 points. Other team leaders were Keval Botadra, Tanay Dalmia, and Ronit Khanna (four points apiece). Brandon Metiver (four points) led the Bulldogs.

Bullets 59, Eagles 44

The Bullets had a balanced attack led by Brendan Frost with 15 points, Colby Tempro with 11, Vince Priore with 10,
and Colton Welch with 8. Emeka led the Eagles with 16 points.

Bullets 45, Satellites 32

Vinnie Priore led the Bullets with 12 points while Ryan Ahmed chipped in 10. Spencer Desrosiers led the Satellites with 17 points.

Sharks 36, Thunder 17

The Sharks moved to 2-2 as Johnny Sullivan, Jaden Murphy, Vishik Bhalla, Nikhil Prasad, and Adam Akel combined for all 36 points.Sam Fletcher, Kyle Gauthier, Zack Plourde, and Damien Peterson played well defensively.

Cavaliers 39, Satellites 31

The Cavs led 16-8 at the half and took control with an 18-4 third quarter run.

They were led by Mason Matylewski with 19 and Josh Lentz (10). Also in the scoring was Rishi Patel, Mason Grant, Gavin Belesca, and Stav Alkalay. Satellites were led by Spencer Desrosiers with nine.

Also scoring were Joe Bodi, Austin Ouellette, Josh Bailey, Caleb Plourde, Colby Klein, and Mike Desrosiers.

Cavaliers 39, Eagles 16

The Cavs were led by Miles Rios with 10 , Mason Matylewski, eight, and Travis Holbrook, Josh Lentz, and Rishi Patel (six each). Gavin Belesca helped out while Nathan Brodeur, Cam Miele, Patrick Jackson and Jacob Soucie played well defensively.

The Eagles were led by Alex and Anthony Pournaras , as well as Matt Keisling and Geoff Lynch

Rockets 22, Knights 10

Maddie Griffins led the Rockets defensively. Samantha Gadbois (six points), Caitlyn Olsen and Brigitte Keavey (four each), Catherine Covert, Olivia Baldassaro, Gwen Fabri and Kayleigh Monis led the offense. Morgan Laforge and Kara Kelliher played well for the Knights.

Hawks 27, Panthers 17

Rita Dow led the Panthers’ scoring with 10 points, while Elizabeth Deck, Cali Coffin, and Alexis Trudel also scored. Also playing well were Hayam Sabir, Paige and Taylor Anger, and Taylor Ireland.

The locals picked up their fifth consecutive win, led offensively by Chase Hart (15 points) and Nevan Roy (14).

The Nighthawks also received help from Matt Wall (eight points), Spencer Derosiers (three), Gabe Perrault (three), and Andrew Penkala (two).

Andover Gold 47,
Nighthawks 29

Nashua was led offensively by Penkala’s 14 points. Also scoring for the Nighthawks were Derosiers (five), Hart (four), Perrault (three), Roy (two), and Melvin Campbell (one).

Also playing well for Nashua during the two games were Stephen McLendon (three reounds, two steals), Jeff Reza (two rebounds, one assist), Tyler Downing (six assists, two steals, one board), and Casey McNally (seven boards, two steals, one assist).

FIFTH GRADE GREEN

The Nighthawks captured the 30th Annual Bob Adiconis Thanksgiving tourney held in North Andover, Mass., beating Methuen 41-21, Newburyport 53-16, North Andover 39-33 and Lowell,
68-24.

They are also 3-0 in regular season play with wins over Salem (44-24), Dracut (46-24) and Andover Gold (60-26).

Team members include Jalen Gilmore, Curtis Harris, Nathan Kane, Matt Keisling, Jaden Murphy, Liam Novak, Michael Robbins, Cody Rocheleau, John Sullivan, and Joshua Taylor. They are coached by Stephanie Kane and Aaron Lopez.

FIFTH GRADE WHITE

The Nashua Nighthawks 5th Grade White team
defeated Chelmsford,
56-40 to open the regular season.

After a fairly close first half, which ended with a 3-pointer by Sid Dutta (his first of the night), the Nighthawks dug in deep in the second to secure the win. They had 17 steals in the contest.

Sam McElliott was the top scorer with 14, followed by Stephen Norris (11), Dutta (10, including 2-for-2 from 3-point range), Connor Dunning (nine), Isaac Acorn (eight) and Daniel Dockrill with four.

Nashua dominated the boards with 35 rebounds. Dunning led with eight boards, followed by McElliott and Dockrill with (five each), Acorn (four), Norris, Dutta, and Moore (all with 3), Drew (two) and Coelho and Lynch with one each.

HOCKEY

Cavalier Squirt II White 6, Wellesley (Mass.) 3

The first period started off as a jousting match between the offensive lines of both the Cavaliers and Wellesley. The offensive line of Kevin Sullivan, Matt Choate and Evan Doughty started off strong with several scoring opportunities, but were successfully defended by the strong Wellesley goaltender.

As the first period was winding down, Ryan McInnis managed to secure the puck behind the net and make a clean pass to Ty Soule skating through the slot for the first goal of the game.

Two minutes later McInnis scored a goal of his own, assisted by
Sal Vella, who won a puck battle in the corner then successfully getting the puck to the front of the net to help the Cavs to a 2-0 lead.

Just a minute into the period, Wellesley’s Andrew Taplin managed to break free of the Cavs defense and put one by goaltender Jacob Roy. The Cavaliers answered quickly just a minute later with a strong shot from Choate that managed to thread the Wellesley defense and get by the goaltender.

With just 22 seconds left in the period Cavaliers defenseman Chase Devins broke up a Wellesley 2-on-1 then fired the puck cross ice to Sal Vella making a break towards the net. Vella scored to extend the lead to 4-1.

Once again, Wellesley came out strong to start the third period with Matthew Giess scoring just 50 seconds in.

Roy, meanwhile, stayed strong in the net. Halfway through the period, the Cavs duo of McInnis and Vella scored again, quickly followed by another
goal from Soule on a pass from McInnis from behind the net. Wellsley scored with just a minute left in the game, but it wasn’t enough.
