A large turnout of area youths competed in the 42nd annual Greater Nashua Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest at the Elm Street Middle School Gym with six Nashua youths – 13-year-old Tilak Patel, 12-year-old Samantha D’Amico, 11-year-old Erin Bourgeois, 10-year-old Sebastian Coelho, 9-year-old Grace Cardin and 8-year-old Trevor Labrecque winning their respective divisions.

In the 12-13 Boys Division, Patel and Eric Grabriel ended in a tie for first place with 18 each out of 25 free throws. A five-shot tie breaker saw last year’s Elks 12-13 champion Patel sinking 3-of-5 to two shots for Grabriel. Paytead Adams finished in third place.

In the boys 10-11 division, 10-year-old Coelho and 10-year-old Joey Morse ended in a tie with 14 free throws each, but Coelho went 3-for-5 in the tiebreaker, winning by a free throw. Daniel Dockrill finished third. Rounding out the three boys division winners was 8-year-old Trevor Labrecque who droped in 13 to win the 8-9 division title. Ryan Bourgeois was second and Jason Zhu was third.

D’Amico, 12, won the 12-13 girls championship sinking 16 of 25 free throws. Jasmine Sylvester was second with 15 and Rita Dow placed third.

Eleven-year-old Bourgeois dropped in nine to win the 10-11 Girls Division. Daija Davis was second with Makenzie Belzil finishing third.

Rounding out the three girls divisions winners was Cardin (8-9 division) with 13 free throws. Ariana Sola was second with 12 free throws, and Morgan Gillis placed third.

The six 2013 area champions will now compete in the New Hampshire State Elks South District Hoop Shoot Championships in Nashua at 9 a.m. on Jan. 4 at the Elm Street Middle School gym. There will be an awards luncheon at the Nashua Lodge of Elks Home immediately after the South District contest.

District winners will advance to the State Finals in Portsmouth on Feb. 2 with winners advancing to the New England Regional Hoop Shoot in South Portland, Maine, in March. The Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Finals take place in Springfield, Mass., in April.

Boys Biddy season starts

The Cavaliers open up season play with a win over the Knicks, 37-31, as they were led by Mason Matylewski with 10 points , Gavin Belesca, eight ( all in the second half); Stav Alkalay and Josh lentz with five and four points respectively.

The Knicks were led by David Tejada and Matt Thibault with six apiece. The teams combined for 18 different players scoring

The Cavaliers also won 39-31 against the Bullets They were led by Mason Matylewski and Josh Lentz with nine and eight points, respectively. Stav Alkalay and Gavin Belesca contributed with six each.

Travis Holbrook, Luis Maldonado , and Nathan Brodeur played well defensively. The Cavs sealed the victory when they outscored the Bullets 21-11 in the third quarter. The Bullets were led by Manav Botandra with 11 points and Colton Welch with seven.

Nighthawks 6th-graders split with Mass. teams

The Sixth Grade boys Nighthawks team split their season opening games, beating Westford Maroon 45-39 but losing to Billerica Green, 42-32.

The offense was a collaborative effort from Brendan Douglas, Yassine Jakib, Ivan Nyantenji, Jordan Bodwell and Brendan Choate. The defense was a team effort as well with a great job by Stav Alkalay, Brad Dietrich, Joey Burturla, Kaiden Gianitsis, Toby Therrien and Xarrack Frater.

Swimming

Seawolves compete in Fla.

The Hampshire Hills Seawolves traveled to Plantation, Fla., recently and competed at the Speedo Winter Championship meet at Central Park

Competing for the team was Margaret Dean (Amherst), Jamie Freud (Amherst) and Kaitlyn McManus (Milford). Over 1,250 swimmers in the meet were competed in this signed age bracket competition trials and finals meet.

Dean had the best times in 50/200 Fly and 50 Free, Freud in the 100/200 Back and 200IM, while McManus excelled in the 50 Breast and 100 Free. Freud (200 Back and 200IM) and Dean (200FL) reached the finals (top 10 swimmers). McManus best finish was 16th in the 100 Breast.

Hockey

Cavs White tops Stoneham

The Cavaliers Squirt II White topped the Stoneham squirts 6-1 as center Ty Soule enjoyed a hat trick. He got the scoring started early with just 49 seconds into the first period after Evan Doughty intercepted an errant clearing pass from the Stoneham goalie and hit Soule coming through the slot. Soule beat the goalie high for the score.

Stoneham came right back and peppered Cavaliers goaltender Ryan McInnis, but Soule scored again seven minutes into the first on a breakout pass from defenseman Chase Devins for a 2-0 lead.

Stoneham quickly answered with a goal by Travis Lapinsky. But the Cavaliers offense consisting of Jesse Gertz, Chase Devins and Jacob Roy continued applying pressure on the Stoneham defense deep into the first period. Roy and Devins scored, both assisted by Gertz.

In the second period, Cavs defensemen Matt Choate, Kevin Sullivan, Michael Spinazzola and Sinead Macaraeg held Stoneham at bay .

Stoneham came out strong in the third period and had several scoring chances, but ultimately ran out of steam halfway into the third period. Soule netted an additional two goals, assisted by Jacob Roy and Chase Devins late in the game.

Cavs Blue top Hyde Park

The Southern New Hampshire Cavaliers Blue Squirts defeated Hyde Park, 8-6.

The SNH Cavaliers netted the first goal just seconds into the start of the game when Andre Ducharme centered the puck from behind the net to forward Aidan Rowe.

Hyde Park stormed right back and scored two quick goals to go on top 2-1.

Cavs forwards Jack Conmy, Nate Bizier and Ducharme quickly got the momentum back. Ducharme’s toe drag across the Hyde Park goal put the goalie off balance opening up the glove side for Bizier to find the back of the net.

The defensive pairing of Ethan Gaffney and Thomas Cahill kept the pressure in the offensive zone. Gaffney stopped a clearing of the puck at the blue line and buried the shot, putting the Cav’s back on top 3-2.

Late in the period, on the power play, the forechecking of Ben Foley and Will Dodge caused a turnover and Rowe capitalized on the loose puck and scored as the period ended 4-2.

The Cavaliers offense continued with an unassisted goal by. Ducharme, but with the score 5-2 Hyde Park started its comeback. Hyde Park scored gloveside on goaltender Matt D’Ortona and continued to pick at the lead, scoring on a power play then breaking through the Cavaliers’ defense on a shorthanded bid to tie the game at 5.

Back on a penalty kill, Matthew MacBean, Rowe, Gaffney and Bizier pushed Hyde Park back into its own end. A Bizier shot to the front of the net was deflected in by Rowe to put the Cavaliers back on top 6-5.

Hyde Park jump right back tying the game at the start of the third, 6-6. At the 10 minute mark of the third, Ryan Kelley, Bizier and Foley rushed the puck breaking through the neutral zone. Kelley put one on net and Bizier scored the seventh of the game for the Cavs.

With less than two minutes left in the game, Hyde Park burst thru center ice on a clear breakaway and the Cavs were called for a trip to set up a penalty shot for a game-tying chance. But, Cavs goalie D’Ortona came out challenging the shooter, the shot went wide blocker side and the Cavs stayed up 7-6.

Dodge scored an empty netter to end the game.

Gymnastics

NSG Level 4, 6 win meets in Wilmington, Mass.

The Nashua School of Gymnastics Levels 4 and 6 teams took first places in the Future Stars of the Red Carpet Meet at Gym Street in Wilmington, Mass. The Level 4 team posted a score of 106.325, while Level 6 had a team score of 110.10 and also received the judges award for The Best Dressed Team.

Level 4 Age 8-under

Megan White had an All Around of 31.10; she scored a 7.65 on vault, 7.35 on bars, 7.65 on beam and 8.45 (fourth) on floor.

Level 4 Age 9

Cristina Cross had an All Around of 35.325 for second place, took third on vault with an an 8.725 on vault, third on bars (8.75), second on beam at 9.00 and 8.85 on floor, good for fourth.. Lindsey Campbell had an All Around of 34.20 for fourth place. She scored a 9.00 (second) on vault, 8.65 (fifth) on bars, 8.00 on beam and 8.55 (eighth) on floor.

Level 4 Age 10

April Koczalka was second All Around at 35.375. She scored a 9.00 (second) on vault, 8.675 (third) on bars, 8.85 (second) on beam and 8.85 (third) on floor. Sue Mai White had a fourth-place All Around of 34.75 as she scored an 8.7 (fifth) on vault, 8.65 (fourth) on bars, 8.70 (third) on beam and 8.70 (sixth) on floor.

Gabbi Gillis had a fifth place All Around of 34.50 with a third on vault (9.00), 8.10 on bars, 8.50 on beam and 9.00 (second) on floor. Annika Sinclair was sixth All Around at 33.825 scoring an 8.175 (seventh) on vault, 8.75 (second) on bars, 8.10 on beam and 8.80 (fifth) on floor.

Level 4 Age 11

Cloe Rivest had an All Around of 32.375 with an 8.775 (fifth) on vault, 7.50 on bars, 8.025 on beam and 8.075 on floor.

Level 6 11-and-under

Corey Foster was first All Around at 35.575 as she scored a 9.00 (second) on vault, 8.30 (first) on bars, 8.75 (second) on beam and 9.525 (first) on floor.

Level 6 Age 12

Devon Rosier was first All Around at 36.90 with a first (9.60) on vault, 8.45 (fourth) on bars, 9.35 (first) on beam and 9.50 (first) on floor. She also received the judges’ award for The Best Presentation. Emily Colburn, meanwhile, had an All Around Score of 34.725 (fourth) as she scored an 8.30 (fourth) on vault, 8.35 on bars, 8.90 (second) on beam and 9.175 (third) on floor.

Abbey Catalano was fifth All Around at 33.275 scoring a 7.80 on vault, 8.30 on bars, 8.375 on beam and 8.80 on floor. Also, Jenna Hatula had a score of 26.325, good for seventh. She tallied an 8.60 (third) on bars, 8.75 (third) on beam and 8.975 on floor.

Level 6 Age 13-and-over

Kyra Rivest too first All Around at 36.35 with a 9.20 (first) on vault, 8.85 (second) on bars, 9.05 (first) on beam and 9.25 (second) on floor. She also received the judges’ award for The Most Powerful Vault.

Olivia Bouthot was second All Around at 35.175 with an 8.40 on vault, 9.10 (first) on bars, 8.45 (fifth) on beam and 9.225 (third) on floor. Emmie White was fourth All Around with a second on vault at 9.02, 8.45 (fifth) on bars, 8.35 on beam and 9.20 (fourth) on floor. She also received the judges’ award for The Most Entertaining Floor Routine.

Reece Greenleaf was fifth All Around at 34.875 as she scored a 8.80 (fourth) on vault, 8.675 (fourth) on bars, 8.375 on beam and 9.025 on floor. Hannah Speight had an All Around of 33.425 (sixth); she scored a 8.00 on vault, 8.10 on bars, 8.25 on beam and 9.075 (sixth) on floor. Right behind her was Lexi Sarro, seventh All Around at 33.40 after a 7.60 on vault, 8.45 (sixth) on bars, 8.65 (fourth) on beam and 8.70 on floor.

Madelyn Campano had a score of 17.15 (10th); she scored a 8.75 (third) on bars and 8.40 (sixth) on beam.
