NASHUA – The World Cup Soccer Club of Greater Nashua is putting the finishing touches on preparations for its 37th Annual Columbus Day Tournament this weekend.

Taking place at fields throughout Greater Nashua, more than 250 teams from throughout the region will compete in more than 30 different age and talent groups. Starting in 1976, the event has steadily expanded, now even featuring teams from Canada.

“We’re always trying to provide the best play for the players in our area,” tournament director Dan Wyborney said, “Plus it brings people to (Nashua) and gives us an opportunity to showcase our city.”

Nashua will have a handful of teams themselves, but the event and organization goes beyond just a providing a competitive tournament.

“This is about the kids,” Wyborney said, “This is an opportunity for kids in the inner-city that need the extra help.”

Considering the number of participants, the coordinators rely heavily on volunteers. Teams from Nashua ask the athletes’ parents to volunteer at least four hours throughout the weekend, and most families are happy to help.

“It takes a lot of coordination, a lot of work,” Wyborney said, “It takes a lot of help… but the families are more than willing.”
