Mites: Melrose (Mass.) 7, Cavaliers 3
Melrose put up five goals in the first period – despite the aggressive efforts of the Cavaliers’ defense – and held on for the win.
The Cavaliers’ offense, consisting of Sal D’Amico, Will Dodge and Sinead Macaraeg dug deep late in the first controlling the puck and netting a goal. Dodge scored with an assist by D’Amico to end the period 5-1.
The second opened up with great team work by the offense, as Mike Spinazzola, Jack MacEachen, Evan Doughty and Kelci Waters got the puck into offensive zone but came up short of a goal do to Melrose’s hard back-checking back checking of Melrose.
The Cavs’ defense of Stephen Toom and Matthew D’Ortona worked the boards in an effort to keep the Melrose offense at bay.
Cavaliers goalie Chase Devins stopped a barrage of shots on net.
Doughty worked the neutral zone, while Toom started the Cavs’ scoring with an unassisted goal at 7:34 of the period.
Jake Dodge and Jesse Gertz kept the Melrose play out of the Cavs’ end through the third period.
With under a minute left in the game, the line of Maceachen, Toom and Macaraeg would combine for a goal by Toom.
