HOCKEY
Valley Hockey League
MITE: Belmont (Mass.) 4,
Cavaliers 0
Despite the offensive efforts of Stephen Toom, Will Dodge and Karenna Beckstein the Cavaliers could not find a crack in the superb defense and goaltending of Belmont, Mass., which grabbed an early 1-0 lead and held off the Cavs on its way to a 4-0 victory.
The defensive play of Michael Spinazza and Kelci Waters kept the game close with hard back checking and hustle in the Cavs’ zone. The Cavs’ offensive trio of Jesse Gertz, Evan Doughty and Chase Devins managed several shots on net to start the second period, but once again Belmont’s goalie (21 saves) was solid.
Starting the third period down 2-0, the Cavs’ offense looked strong. Toom and Dodge had several scoring opportunities but could not buy a goal. The Defensive duo of Sal D’Amico and Jack MacEachen, fought hard to keep the puck out of the offensive end but the Belmont offense proved to be too much for goaltender Matthew D’Ortona. Belmont scored two more goals to close out the scoring.
SQUIRT: Cavaliers 4,
Andover (Mass.) 0
Goalie Thomas Kelly recorded his first shutout of the season as the Cavaliers topped Andover, Mass., 4-0.
Paul Vachon found the back of the net early in the first period with a quick backhand past Andover’s goalie. He then added another goal late in the first for a 2-0 lead.
Cole Giersch, Dylan LaLiberte, Peter Lennox and Mathew Lynch made up the Cavaliers’ offensive lines and conducted what was the best passing game seen this season. The score would remain 2-0 until the third period when Lynch scored on an assist by defenseman Jackson Gates.
The Cavaliers stayed strong due to the efforts of Gates, Torin White and Anthony Viola. All were relentless keeping the puck in the offensive zone and back checking. Late in the third period Colin MacDonald scored putting the Cavs ahead by four to close the scoring.
