Division 2 sixth grade state final: Force 30, Keene 13

Nashua’s defense keyed the way as the PAL Force program recorded a 30-13 win over Keene to stake claim to the New Hampshire Division 2 championship.

Nashua’s defense came on strong in the first quarter causing Keene to fumble the ball into the waiting arms of Tyler Gagnon. Offensively, Gagnon then was able to run the ball for three consecutive plays just short of the first down.

Nashua’s defense would then take over and James Mackenzie kept Keene from gaining ground. Kevin Maldonado then stripped the ball from Keene’s offense and was able to run 45 yards into the end zone for a Nashua touchdown. Nashua’s defense then took the field with noticeable tackles by Gagnon, Kevin Maldonado, Andre Laplante and Austin Ouellette. Gagnon then saw an opportunity and recovered another fumble for Nashua.

Ouellette carried the ball 99 yards from Nashua’s own 1-yard line and secured another Nashua touchdown for a lead. Keene secured a touchdown of their own on the next drive leaving the score at 12-6. Laplante returned the favor with an 85-yard carry into the end zone leaving the score at 18-6 Nashua.

The second quarter would start with Nashua’s defense wearing down Keene’s offense even more with notable tackles by Mackenzie, Logan Boucher, Aidan Gillis, Gagnon, Nevan Roy and Michael Gillespie. The offense was equally impressive with gains by Justin Cardullo, Ouellette, Gagnon, Nate Nugent, J.J. Fiore, Kevin Maldonado, Laplante and Ouellette. In the third quarter, Nashua’s offense came back from the half stronger with Gagnon leaving the ball at Nashua’s 32-yard line on the kick return. Mackenzie then carried the ball another 11 yards for the first down. Ouellette then ran the ball 70 yards into the end zone for a Nashua touchdown. Nashua’s defense was then able to prevent Keene from gaining momentum with tackles by Roy, Maldonado and Gillis.

Nashua kept Keene from getting the ball into the end zone, but this left Nashua sitting on their own goal line on offense. Ouellette took the energy from the roaring sound of the Nashua fans and ran the ball the entire length of the field for a Nashua touchdown and a 30-6 lead over Keene, which was able to find the end zone prior to the end of the third quarter.

Leading the drive in the fourth quarter was Gillis, who had a fumble recovery allowing Nashua to regain momentum and possession of the ball. After turning the ball over on downs, it was the Force defense coming up big again. Harley Ciardi held back Keene’s offense and was able to get the ball back on downs. Ouellette carried the ball for 8 yards on the next play and then for a first down the following play. Mackenzie then took over running the rest of the downs and gaining yards and first downs, but also running the clock down to nothing.

at Londonderry Classic

The Nashua PAL Force Division 8 cheerleading team earned second-place honors on the mat at the 2012 Londonderry Classic this past weekend. They move on to compete in the Regional competition later this month in hopes of qualifying for a chance at the national title. The Force – coached by Kaitlynn Charest, Robyn Jolicoeur, Donna Brooks, Nicole Jarry, Maddie Brooks, Taylor McNeil and Kassandra McNulty – consists of Hannah Thompson, Kaylee Miller, Kelcey Acevedo, Erika Long, Alize Santiago, Ava Rodriguez, Julianna Silva, Paige Jolicoeur, Janessa Morales, Emily Wall, Grace Brooks, Alyssa Stanton, McKenzie Cummings, Alivia Espinal, Elizebeth Poitras, Nevaeh Spence and Garbriella McNulty.

Nashua Elks

Division 1 sixth grade state final: Pelham 21, Crusaders 7

In a rematch of last year’s state championship game, the Crusaders and Razorbacks clashed at Stellos Stadium. Once again, Pelham came out on top.

Nashua scored its only touchdown of the day in the first quarter on a 42-yard screen pass from quarterback Andrew Penkala to Jaylan Pacheco. Penkala then scored the extra point on a quarterback keeper to tie the score 7-7 heading into the second quarter.

The Nashua offense received strong running performances from Pacheco, Penkala, Casey McNally, Brendon Frost and Jake Robbins.

The Crusaders also received a big day in the trenches from linemen Justin Arnesen, Braden McDonnell, Zach O’Neil and Brandon Martin. Also performing well on offense were receivers Jeffrey Allen and Gabe Perrault.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Crusaders received top plays from Mark Lagasse (sack), Penkala (fumble recovery), Robbins (pass deflection), Frost (interception), Pacheco (several tackles), Cole Desmond, Quincy Cotto, Jacob Babb and O’Neil. Nashua also received multiple tackles from Tanner Plourde, Nathanael Tejeda, McDonnell, McNally, Perrault and Martin.

Nashua special teams was active all game and received a great effort from kicker Josh McElligott, who also returned a kick. In addition to McElligott, Nashua also received special teams contributions from Fortier (return), and tackles from Plourde and Penkala.

Levels 4-6 second
at Harvest Meet

Nashua School of Gymnastics Levels 4-6 competed in their first meet of the year – the Nov. 4 Harvest Meet at Brentwood Gymnastics – and placed second. Gymnasts needed an All-Around score of 31.00 to qualify for Sectionals.

Level 4 (Ages 6-8)

Lindsey Campbell had an all-around of 36.125 (1st place); she scored a 9.45 (1st) on vault, 8.6 (2nd) on bars, 8.9 (1st) on beam, and 9.175 (1st) on floor.

Megan White had an all-around of 35.325 (2nd place); she scored a 9.05 (4th) on vault, 9.025 (1st) on bars, 8.4 (2nd) on beam, and 8.85 (2nd) on floor.

Level 4 (Age 9)

Nithya Arun had an all-around of 35.325 (5th place); she scored a 9.05 on vault, 8.5 (4th) on bars, 9.0 (3rd) on beam, and 8.775 (4th) on floor.

Level 4 (Age 10)

Cloe Rivest had an all-around of 34.5 (2nd place); she scored a 9.35 on vault, 7.65 on bars, 9.15 (1st) on beam, and 8.35 on floor.

Level 5 (Ages 7-8)

Cristina Cross had an all-around of 31.525 (2nd place); she scored a 7.825 on vault, 7.4 on bars, 8.8 (1st) on beam, and 7.5 on floor.

Level 5 (Age 9)

Sue Mai White had an all-around of 33.5 (1st place); she scored an 8.575 (1st) on vault, 8.1 (5th) on bars, 8.3 (2nd) on beam, and 8.525 (3rd) on floor.

April Koczalka had an all-around score of 31.975 (4th place); she scored an 8.175 (3rd) on vault, 8.65 (1st) on bars, 7.9 (4th) on beam, and 7.25 on floor.

Level 6 (Ages 9-10)

Samantha Gates had an All Around Score of 33.075 (2nd); she scored an 8.175 on vault, 8.40 (1st) on bars, 8.725 (2nd) on beam and 7.775 on floor.

Corey Foster had an All Around Score of 31.475 (4th); she scored an 8.725 (3rd) on vault, 5.60 on bars, 8.70 (3rd) on beam and 8.45 (3rd) on floor.

Sarah St. Lawrence had an All Around Score of 8.10 (7th); she scored an 8.10 on beam.

Level 6 (Age 11)

Breanna Vivier had an All Around Score of 33.40 (3rd); she scored an 8.525 on vault, 7.65 (4th) on bars, 8.85 (3rd) on beam, and 8.375 (3rd) on floor.

Emily Colburn had an All Around Score of 25.55 (7th); she scored an 8.75 (2nd) on vault, 7.40 on bars and 9.40 (1st) on beam.

Abbey Catalano had an All Around Score of 24.70 (8th); she scored an 8.60 (3rd) on vault, 7.40 on bars and 8.70 (4th) on beam.

Level 6 (Ages 12-plus)

Reece Greenleaf had an All Around Score of 33.675 (1st); she scored an 8.35 on vault, 7.85 on bars, 8.75 (1st) on beam and 8.725 (2nd) on floor.

Madelyn Campano had an All Around Score of 33.10 (5th); she scored an 8.775 (2nd) on vault, 8.00 (3rd) on bars, 8.50 on beam and 7.825 on floor.

Hannah Speight had an All Around Score of 32.675 (6th); she scored an 8.475 on vault, 7.05 on bars, 8.75 (1st) on beam and 8.40 (3rd) on floor.

SNH Cavaliers I 3,
Salem/Swampscott (Mass.) 3

Trailing 3-0 to Salem/Swampscott, the Southern New Hampshire Cavaliers charged back to tie the game 3-3.

T.J. Vitullo got things moving for the Cavs, scoring off a feed from Joe Roth. A little over a minute later, winger Max Sears picked up his first of two goals to close the game to 3-2 late in the third period.

Cavs defensemen Max Porter, Alec MacEachen and Sean Kelly had an outstanding final period smothering the opposing team’s offense, while goalie Ben Goolsby made several key saves to keep the game close.

Cavs forwards Isaac Rogers, Nic Miller, Roth, Sears and Vitullo did an excellent job controlling the puck in the final period.

With a little over three minutes remaining, Vitullo fed Sears, who gave the Cavs the tying goal.

With the momentum in their favor, the Cavs continued to pressure the opposing team for the final few minutes, but could not notch another goal to secure the win.

SNH Cavaliers 6,
Masconomet AA 2

Jake Dodge started off the scoring with an unassisted goal just three minutes into the game, and the Cavaliers never looked back.

Evan Doughty scored his first of the season, assisted by Stephen Toom, who scored an unassisted goal less than a minute later and the Cavs were on a roll.

The tough defense of Sinead Macaraeg, Kelci Waters and Karenna Beckstein proved to be too much for Masco.

Will Dodge kept the Cavs’ offense going with an unassisted goal and followed it up less than two minutes later with a goal assisted by Jake Dodge for a 5-0 lead after one period.

Masco tried for a comeback early in the second period, scoring only once, while Salvatore D’Amico scored his first goal and ended the second period with the Cavaliers up 6-1.

The third period was all defense, Chase Devins and Jessie Gertz played outstanding with their persistent forchecking, while Matthew D’Ortona‘s goaltending was outstanding only allowing two Masco goals.
