Red Sox 5, Cardinals 1

Red Sox pitching was strong as Nate Demers and Pat Holt combined for nine strikeouts. The bats were also alive with clutch hits from Zach Wilson and Troy Corkham.

Twins 10, Royals 0

Peter Dyszczyk pitched four innings, allowing just two hits and striking out 10 for the shutout. At the plate, Dyszczyk had five RBIs, including three on a home run over the left-center field fence and a triple. Mike Fletcher had two hits, as did Courtney Olsen, who had a two-run double. Danny Girouard had two hits and Zak Almeidia had one hit and an RBI.

Cardinals 9, Royals 1

In the NLL official opening game and first game on the newly renovated Sunset Heights field, the Cardinals beat the Royals in a complete-game, 11 strikeout effort from pitcher Bryce Eckenrode. Defensive highlights included a double play turned by Gabe Perrault and Spencer Dozois and three outs made by first baseman Aiden van Batenburg.

A’s 5, Cardinals 4

In his major league debut, Robbie Long pitched 31?3 innings and collected six strikeouts for the Cardinals.

Long went 2 for 2 with a walk, single and a triple. Spencer Dozois and Gabe Perrault came in as relievers. Matt Eskenas was solid behind the plate in defeat.

Twins 5, A’s 0

For the Twins, Adam Fenlason pitched a complete game shutout. Only letting up 2 hits and striking out 18 batters. At the plate Adam went 2-2 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Mike Fletcher, Court Olsen and

Peter Dyszczyk combined for 5 hits and 3 runs. For the A’s Trey LeGraw and Tyler Rogers got hits for the A’s. Kevin Collins and Colin Dexter played well defensively. A’s pitchers pounded the strike zone striking out 11 while only walking one.

MINORS

Mets 11, White Sox 10

Josh Abel stepped to the plate with the bases load and knocked in the game-winning run, as the Mets rallied from behind to beat the White Sox. Efrain Beltran took the mound in relief to secure the win. Alyssa Legee had an RBI double.

Giants 14, Mariners 0

A superb effort by Alex Messig spurred the Giants to a 14-0 win over the Mariners. Messig got the win for the Giants thanks to 12 strikeouts. The Giants’ pitcher tossed five innings of one-hit ball. At the plate, he reached base four times in the game, including a double in the third inning. The Giants got to the Mariners pitching, as seven hitters combined for seven hits, 11 RBIs and 11 runs scored.

Brewers 14, Mariners 3

Owen Duda pitched a great game giving up three runs on five hits and six strikeouts. The bats of John Sullivan and Tyler Jagentenfl continue to be hot. Steve Vertigans hit a double and the Brewers’ Sam Fletcher and Nick Roscoe turned a double-play. Brandon Metivier tripled, drove in and scored one run. Caleb Plourde had an RBI double.

Phillies 8, White Sox 3

The Phillies opened the 2012 season with an 8-3 victory in front of a big crowd at Haines Street Field. The Phillies had nine hits, led by Alex Ortiz with a triple, two singles and three RBIs. On the mound, Colin Toohey had a great debut, allowing no runs on one hit and five strikeouts over two innings of work. Colby Klein also pitched two strong innings allowing only one run.

Phillies 12, Padres 7

The bats were active for the Phillies, who rattled off 14 hits on the day. Adam Gosselin led the way with a single, double and triple while Antonio Castro and Alex Ortiz each had three hits. Cody Cargill also had a big day at the plate with two hits and three RBIs. On the mound, the combination of Gosselin and Ortiz struck out 16 and allowed just four hits on the day.

Padres 5, Mets 4

What a game by both teams as it took a walk off run in the bottom of the 6th to decide this one. Peyton Adams earned game ball honors after throwing 31?3 innings giving up one run (a Zack Gauthier solo home run), striking out eight and scoring the winning run. Jack O’Malley started the game and struck out six. The offense was led by Mike Cawthorn, Steve Smith and Jaden Murphy. Great defense was played by both teams.

Phillies 11, Mets 7

Their offense came alive with nine runs in the fourth inning, and the Phillies went on to beat the Mets. Alex Ortiz had three hits, including a double and four RBIs on the day while Adam Gosselin collected two hits and three RBIs. Johnny Befumo and Cody Cargill also continued to swing the bat well. Colin Toohey had another strong outing on the mound with two innings of work, allowing only two runs and striking out four. Befumo pitched the final two innings to secure the victory only giving up one hit, while striking out six.

NORTH/SOUTH LEAGUES

South Phillies 5, North Cubs 2

The North Cubs played head-to-head with the South Phillies until the fifth inning. The Cubs’ Conner Erickson went three-plus innings allowing just two runs while striking out four. Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth, the Phillies connected on a couple of infield hits, followed by a single that led to a three-run inning. The Cubs two runs came off the bat of Patrick McCarthy who was 3 for 3 on the night with a solo homer in the first and a two RBIs. Evan Holland came on in relief to settle things down. The Cubs had an opportunity, but with the tying run at the plate Jacob Hughes’ line drive to first base ended the threat. The Cubs also where caught at the plate twice, once on a passed ball and the other on a attempted steal turned rundown.

North Angels 16, South Athletics 4

The North Angels bats came alive with 13 hits and 16 runs to beat the South Athletics. The Angels were led by Anthony Forgione (three hits, four RBIs) and Jacob Murphy (three hits, one walk, two RBIs).

Defense and pitching keyed the win with great glove work by Ben Pelletier at shortstop, Shaun Michaels all around the diamond and Andrew Frost in center field. The pitching staff kept the A’s bats in check with seven strikeouts, just two walks and five hits.

The A’s offense was led by Stephen and Thomas Mclendon, who reached base five out of six plate appearances. The A’s sent four pitchers – Kevin Bhasrgar, Mclendon, Pranva Parhalig and Robbie Paulous – to the mound.

North D’backs 6, South Royals 3

Anthony Paquin pitched six complete innings with 11 strikeouts , three walks and only two hits for the Diamondbacks. He also contributed offensively, going 2 for 2 with a walk, three RBIs and a run scored. With singles from Tony Gallinaro, Will Brooks and Paquin, the D’backs opened with three runs on three hits in the first inning.

The Royals’ lead-off hitter reached on a walk but was gunned down trying to steal by D’backs catcher Mason Dane. Jack Gould had a perfectly executed squeeze bunt and Rory Curran played well defensively at second base.

North Angels 19, South Giants 9

Angels pitcher Anthony Forgione went the distance in a mercy rule-shortened game. Andre Laplante (hit, three walks, two runs scored), Forgione (three hits, three runs), Jacob Murphy (two hits, two runs), Ben Pelletier and Dallas Kastens led the Angels offense.

The Giants inched back and took the lead 9-7, but the Angels erupted for 12 runs in the top of the fourth with eight walks in the inning as Joe Pappas, Kori Haggett, Todd Richardson each scored twice. Also contributing where Sean Michael, Gedyion Prince, Cody Fleming and Andrew Frost.

South Orioles 7, North Cubs 6

Cubs pitcher AJ Mele went the distance with nine strikeouts, five hits and four walks, but it wasn’t enough as the first-place Orioles hung on to capture the one-run victory.

Sam Powers, Pat McCarthy (3 for 3, two doubles, two runs scored), Mele (two hits), Evan Holland, Kevin Hughes and Connor Muise led the Cubs offense. Hughes also played well defensively at catcher.

South Giants 13, North D’Backs 4

Tony Gallinaro, Mason Dane (2 for 2, two runs scored), Jack Gould and Nick Tzannos led the Diamondbacks offense. Jack Gould and Will Brooks combined on the mound for the D’backs.

North D’Backs 8, South Orioles 3

Tony Gallinaro (five strikeouts, three hits, no walks) went the distance for the Diamondbacks.

The defense was outstanding with big plays by third baseman Jack Gould and 9-year-old second baseman Rory Curran. The Orioles offense was led by Chris Hart (one hit, two runs) and Matt Savoia (three hits).

CENTRAL LEAGUE

MAJORS

Braves 9, Athletics 7

The Athletics were led by great performances on the hill by Dominick Paladino and Mason Matylewsky. The Braves jumped out quick with two runs in the first, but the Athletics quickly responded with a monster home run by Gaven Forcier. Cameron Nixon, Deven Brasil and Nate Nugent combined efforts for the Braves to hold off the A’s.

Athletics 8, D’backs 7

The A’s hung on to defeat the Diamondbacks behind Mason Matylewski’s arm and bat. He pitched three innings giving up one hit and striking out six. He also knocked in two runs. Sam Charron had an impressive sacrifice bunt, scoring Zach Bodwell from second base. Hector Rodriguez pitched four strong innings for the D’backs. They also got strong performances at the plate from Kyle Evans and Tanner Plourde.

Orioles 9, HB Nationals 5

The Orioles played strong defense led by Tim Dagnault and Zac Carter. Hollis/Brookline fought hard, but with solid hitting by Timmy McMinimen and Seth Marcano the Orioles came out on top, scoring seven of their runs in the third inning.

AAA

Dodgers 11, Cardinals 8

The Dodgers’ Nate Tejada and the Cardinals’ Drew Frost both pitched well. Leading the way for the Dodgers offensively was Ben Levine (three hits) and Nate Boardman (two hits).

Braves 13, Royals 8

The Braves were led on the mound by Quinn Hilger with 7 strikeouts and Alex Lambalot and the Royals with Sean Quinlan and Spencer Champagne. Peeroum Hay (2-3, triple, 3 RBIs, 2 runs), Yassine Jakib (2-3, 2 doubles, 2 runs) and Liam Novak (2-3, 2 RBIs, 2 runs) led the Braves with Jack Woermer hitting a nice double for the Royals.

Dodgers 7, Royals 3

Javier Lopez stuck out six on the mound and went 2 for 3 at the plate to lead the Dodgers to victory. Nate Tejada also pitched well. The Royals attempted a late-inning comeback led by Dylan Homsy (2 for 3), but came up short.

Tigers 8, Braves 5

Kaiden Gianitsis struck out 12 batters in four innings of work to lead the Tigers over the Braves. Rafael Garcia went 3 for 3, Dylan Dichard went 2 for 2 with a walk and three runs and Gianitsis blasted a two-run triple for the Tigers.

Chass Savage struck out the side in the sixth inning to record the save. The Braves Andy Tate went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and Thavary Hay struck out five in two innings.

Orioles 11, Dodgers 2

Dodgers were led by good pitching from Jadakis Lopez and a two-run double by Ben Levine. The Orioles were led by Varun Lingadal, who pitched two shutout innings with five strikeouts.

He also had a bases-clearing triple and scored on a throwing error. Zaki Quereshy also contributed with two great innings pitched and three RBIs.

Royals 11, White Sox 9

The Royals got off to a fast start scoring seven runs in the first inning. Leading the way for the Royals were Aiden Belanger (1 for 3), Max Ackerman (2 for 2, two runs) and Jack Woermer (2 for 2, three runs). The White Sox had great pitching from Destiny Torres and Ryan Somers.

LACROSSE

Hollis Brookline

U11 Boys: White team goes 1-1 last weekend

The Hollis Brookline U11 White team went 1-1 over the weekend. In their first match-up, a non-conference game against undefeated Bedford, HB scored a come-from-behind 6-5 win.

Ian Babcock had an excellent performance in net, while defensemen Jack Sinclair, Matthew Wojcik, Henry Burns and Teddy Mosentelli shut down Bedford in the fourth quarter. HB midfielders Dylan Terenzoni, Ronnie Hillard, Scott Walsh, Liam Baldwin, TJ Vitullo, Sal Vella, Andrew Kotarski and attackmen Hunter Hudzik, David Wang, Tommy Gardiner, Nicholas Dapolito sparked a second-half offensive flurry. HB came up short in Game 2, falling 13-1 to undefeated Laconia.

Nashua Blast

U11 Girls: Blast 2, Laconia 2

The Nashua Blast Girls U11 team travelled to Laconia and came home with a 2-2 tie. Kirsten McIntyre did a great job taking faceoffs, while Molly Caron, Cassidy Lavoie, Julia Sullivan, Taylor Guilfoil and Angie Clancy were strong up front.

Nashua finally broke through on a late first-half goal by Campbell Haller on an assist from Coryn Flavin. The rest of the middies feeding the attack in the first half were Payson Mooso, Grace Lambert, Britney Pearson and Kelsie Leith.

Helping them keep the ball in Laconia’s end were the defensive efforts of Abbey Rowe, Hannah Fortin, Emily Morneau, Alison Hartshorn and Victoria Gates. Izzy Bolduc posted a shut out in the first half between the pipes for the Blast.

Halfway through the second half, the Blast added another goal by McIntyre on a great assist by Mooso. Pearson and Julia Sullivan took over the faceoff duties in this half, and Bolduc came out of the net to lead the defense for the Blast. Abbey Rowe did another great job in net, but the ladies from Laconia managed to score two goals in second half to tie up the game.

GDTC’s 37th annual Fun Run Progam starts in June

The Greater Derry Track Club is hosting its 37th annual Kid’s Summer Fun Run Program. The weekly training and racing series starts on Tuesday, June 26, and runs on consecutive Tuesday nights through Aug. 7. The series will be held at Londonderry High School.

Baseball

NECC Catching Camp set for two weeks of training

The New England Catching Camp still has space available for the 2012 Summer Camps. There will again be two weeks of camp to choose from.

The four-day, 16-hour camps will be held July 23-26 and Aug. 6-9. This camp has drawn hundreds of baseball and fast-pitch softball catchers from across the country over the last 11 years, and is the only camp in New England exclusively for catchers. NECC will be offering a session for player’s ages 8-12 from 8 a.m.-noon and ages 13-18 will meet from 1-5 p.m. daily.

The camp will be held at Lions Field in Hudson, and will focus on all the skills needed to excel at the games most demanding position.

The sessions will include training on receiving, blocking, throwing, all fielding skills, as well as proper stretching and conditioning.

Swimming lesson registration open

The Nashua Parks & Recreation Department is now accepting summer swim lesson registrations. Registration forms will be available at the Recreation Office in Greeley Park and online at www.gonashua.com.

Parents can sign up their child for two of the three sessions prior to July 6. After July 6, registrations will be accepted for remaining session(s). Swim lessons are $20 per child or a maximum of $60 per family per session.

Each session runs two weeks and lessons are one-half hour in length. All lessons take place between 9 a.m.-noon. Session dates are: June 25-July 6; July 16-27; and Aug. 6-17.

Sign ups for sports/study camps now underway

Registration forms are available at all Nashua private and public schools at the main office, Nashua Public Library, City Clerks Office at City Hall, Jeannotte’s Market, Bright Spot Convenience Store, and at the Recreation Office at Greeley Park. 2012 Nashua PAL camps scheduled for early June

The Nashua PAL Force City Football Camp, a week-long camp which focuses on strength and speed technique along with the dynamics of offensive and defensive positions, is scheduled for June 11-15 from 6-8:30 p.m. each day at Artillery Field (behind Holman Stadium). All participants must currently be in grades 2-7. There is a $20 cost per participant.

The Position Specific Camps, which focus more on fundamental and techniques of specific offensive and defensive positions along with more one-on-one instructional time are schedules as follows:

Offensive skills positions of quarterback, receivers and running backs, along with defensive the positions of linebackers, safeties and corners on June 18 and 19 at Artillery Field (behind Holman Stadium) from 6-8:30 p.m. All participants must currently be in grades 2-7. There is a $10 cost per participant.

Offensive and defensive linemen on June 21 and 22 from 6-8:30 p.m. at Artillery Field (behind Holman Stadium). All participants must currently be in grades 2-7.

BST Summer Academy accepting applications

BST Basketball is now accepting registration for its Summer Academy program. The Summer Academy program is for boys of all skill levels, grades 4-12 (classes: 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021). The program is Monday and Wednesday evenings, starting Monday, June 18, at SNHU-Manchester. Grades 4-7 workouts run from 5-7 p.m., followed by grades 8-12 from 7-9. Nashua PAL honoring Bob Ryan at annual dinner

Renowned sports journalist, TV personality and author, Bob Ryan will headline the second Nashua Police Athletic League Award Dinner on June 28 at Conway Arena.

Ryan will be named PAL’s Man of the Year. The event, which runs from 6-9 p.m., will also recognize local sports journalists, PAL athletes, volunteers and coaches. Sponsored by The Telegraph, organizers hope the evening will be a significant fundraiser for PAL, which provides coaching and mentoring to local youth athletes.

Ryan, a 2011 inductee into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame, is known for his work at The Boston Globe, ESPN and Basketball Times.

Local journalists of the year awards will be presented for print and broadcast. PAL will recognize youth athletes of the year in football, boxing, cross country and cheerleading. A PAL coach of the year and volunteer of the year will also be named.

Tickets to the event are $60 a piece or $400 for a table of eight and can be purchased at Conway Arena and at Nashua PAL, 52 Ash St., Nashua.
