Fairgrounds sweeps City Title, Thibault Cup

Fairgrounds Middle School brought home the traveling Thibault Cup, awarded annually to the city’s top middle school wrestling team, by capturing the 7th annual Mark Thibault Nashua City Middle School Wrestling last weekend at Nashua High School North.

Sponsored by the Nashua Boys and GIrls Club, the event saw middle school wrestlers compete in round robin brackets for 15 weight classes, bringing the interscholastic wrestling season to a close. The Falcons, who led the team scoring with 94 points, were paced by two Middle School State Champions crowned the previous week –160-pound Brendan Kendall and 100-pound Pat Sullivan. The 2011 City Champions, Pennichuck Middle School (74 points), was the runner up, followed by Elm Street (58) and Nashua Catholic Jr. High (40). The individual city champions in 15 weight classes were:

Nashua youth wrestling team ties for third at Elementary State Championships

The Nashua Boys and Girls Club youth wrestling team placed third in a three-way tie at last weekend’s Elementary School Sate Wrestling Championships at Nashua High School North. Over 280 youth wrestlers from all over the state squared off in round robin brackets to choose individual and team state champs.

The Salem Boys and Girls Club took the state title, followed by the runner-up Manchester YMCA Eagles. The Nashua squad tied for third place with the Londonderry Youth Wrestling Association and Newport Parks and Recreation from Sullivan County.

Four Nashua wrestlers earned individual state championships: Fourth-graders Nathan Zalzal, Tariq Alston and Victor Ceballos, and third-grader Zach Rioux.

Earning second place silver medals were Ian Deluca, Liam Finn, Jahnious Jones, Luca Frioni, Owen Duda (tie), Owen Finn and Ryan Palmer. The Gate City’s third-place bronze medalists included Patrick Melanson, Teddy Moscatelli, Juan Torres, Troy Moscatelli and Alayna LaValley. The copper medalists for the BGCGN squad were Braden White, Aurora Holland, Alford Acari, Mickey Mathson, Rence Odell, Olivia Soucy, Michael Coulombe, Bryan Jimenez and Destiny Torres.

HOCKEY

Cavaliers Squirt AAA comes up short

In Valley League Youth Hockey action, the Cavaliers were defeated by Agawam (Mass.) Squirt team 7-4. The Cavs found themselves down 4-0 at the end of the first period, but never gave up and battled back to be down 6-4 late in the third period. The offense was led by Isaac Rogers, who recorded a hat trick, with TJ Vitullo recording the other goal with assists recorded by Sean Kelly and Anil Rao. Brandon Hugh shifted back to defense in the third period and was able to help shutdown the Agawam offense, but it was too late.

GYMNASTICS

NSG Levels 5, 6 win Friendship Classic

The Nashua School of Gymnastics’ Levels 4-7 teams participated in the girls Friendship Classic Meet at Granite State Gymnastics Center in Bow on Feb. 25. Levels 5 and 6 won their portion of the meet, while Level 4 finished third.

Level 4 (BUDDIES DIVISION)

Amanda Beauregard had an All Around Score of 35.550 (1st place); she scored a 9.1 (7th place) on vault, 8.15 (7th place) on bars, 9.35 (1st place) on beam and 8.95 (1st place) on floor.

Cristina Cross had an All Around Score of 35.425 (2nd place); she scored a 9.35 (1st place) on vault, 8.425 (4th place) on bars, 8.7 (6th place) on beam and 8.95 (1st place) on floor.

Nithya Arun had an All Around Score of 34.15 (6th place); she scored a 9.25 (3rd place) on vault; 7.85 (9th place) on bars, 8.425 (8th place) on beam and 8.625 (2nd place) on floor.

Sue Mai White had an All Around Score of 36.625 (2nd place); she scored a 9.375 (3rd place) on vault, 9.1 (3rd place) on bars, 9.125 (2nd place) on beam and 9.025 (2nd place) on floor.

The Compulsory Gymnasts (Levels 9 and 10) participated in the Little Bigger Invitational Meet at Winchester High School on Feb. 24.

Megan Middlemiss took 2nd Place All Around score of 34.45; 3rd place on bars, 3rd place on beam and 1st place on floor.

North registration March 10-11

Nashua North Cal Ripken Youth Baseball for children ages 5-12 is seeking players. Registration is open and forms can be found online at www.nnbaseball.com. Nashua South Cal Ripken is currently accepting registration information for the upcoming 2012 season.

Any boy or girl (ages 5-12) born between May 1, 1999 and April 30, 2007 is eligible to apply. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn the game of baseball and play against great competition.

West, Northwest merge to form Central league

Nashua Central Cal Ripken baseball is now accepting registrations for the spring season. Nashua West and Nashua Northwest have recently merged to create Nashua’s newest baseball league for players age 4½ thru 12. Registration can be completed online at www.nashuacentral.org or in person from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday through March 11 at the Nashua West Clubhouse (above the concession stand), located at the corner of Grand Avenue and North Seventh Street (Next to the Ledge Street School).

Nashua Little League

Registration now open for 2012

Nashua Little League offers levels for all boys and girls from age 5-12 years old. We also have The Challenger Division (5-18 year olds), a program for developmentally and physically challenged youth, helping them to enjoy the full benefits of Little League participation in an athletic environment structured to their abilities.

Spring baseball registration fee: $35 for the first child and $30 for each additional child (family cap is $75). Every child that applies by the March 11 deadline will be placed on a team. To register, visit www.nashualittleleague.org. This is for minors and majors only. Walk-ins are welcome.

NH U14 Black Flies holding tryouts

The 2012 New Hampshire Black Flies 14U AAU baseball team is seeking one or two players to complete the roster.

Based in Bedford, this highly competitive program offers a small roster size, indoor winter training at the Hampshire Dome and the Playball of Nashua, professional instruction and league play (both AAU and GSBL). The team will be ending the season in July with a trip to compete in the AAU National Championships, which will be held in Fort Myers, Fla., at the spring training facilities of the

Hudson Heat U10 needs to fill roster

The Hudson Heat dirls fastpitch U10 team is looking for a couple of girls, who are serious about softball, to fill out their roster for the upcoming tournament season. Hudson Heat Softball is a very successful organization focusing on teaching solid techniques and mechanics to play at a very competitive level. They are looking for girls born in 2001 or 2002, who are ready to train and compete at the highest level. MYA spring registration now underway online

Registration for the Merrimack Youth Association’s spring soccer season is open online at www.myasoccer.org. Early registration closes March 17. Late registrations will be accepted through April 1. The spring season runs from April 28-June 16.

Shooting Stars tryouts scheduled

The Shooting Stars Girls U16 AAU basketball program is holding tryouts on March 10 at the SportZone in Derry from 6-7:30 p.m. There is a $20 tryout fee.
