NEGTC holds first local event in several years

The coaches and gymnasts of New England Gymnastics Training Center hosted their first boys competition in six years. Teams from as far as Vermont competed in levels 4 – 9, consisting of six events. The gymnasts of NEGTC had strong scores winning 11 of 13 top gymnasts in the All Around events. NEGTC level 4 gymnasts, Christian Divernieri and Camden Veino, had good showings in the Vault (14.5) and Floor Event (14.3) respectively. Their fellow level 4 teammate, Hudson resident Ty Baker, won 1st All Around with a score of 82.2. Level 8 gymnasts Andrew Sevigny and Colby Routhier of Nashua placed first and second respectively with scores of (11.6 and 10.7) on Rings and (12.1 and 10.7) on Parallel Bars. Sevigny won 1st All Around with an overall score of 70.2.

NEGTC hosts New Hampshire’s largest boys gymnastic team. Their boys competed again last weekend in the 2012 West Point Gymnastics Open at the Military Academy In West Point, N.Y.

Prep-Op team solid at qualifying meet in Hudson

Nashua School of Gymnastics Prep-Optional gymnasts competed in a local qualifying meet Jan. 22 at NEGTC in Hudson. Many of the gymnasts placed in the top 3 in the all-around and in individual events.

Coryn Flavin had an all-around score of 36.025 (1st). She scored 9.10 (1st) on vault, 9.55 (1st) on bars, 8.45 on beam, 8.925 (3rd) on floor.

Compulsory Levels take part in ‘Oh the Places You’ll Go’ Invite

Compulsory Levels 4-6 and Level 7 gymnasts were solid at the ‘Oh the Places You’ll Go’ Invitational in Andover, Mass., last weekend.

Levels 4 and 5 took third place. Additionally Corey Foster received a Specialty Award for Best Recovery.

HOCKEY

Mite

Nashua 1 goes 2-0 for the weekend

The Panthers Mite 1 team earned 2 impressive victories over the weekend.

The first game was an evenly matched defensive battle, with Nashua emerging on top of a 2-0 score against Billerica. It was a scoreless battle for most of the game until Corey Girouard hit the top corner of the net in the closing minutes; Sean Morrissey added insurance goal shortly after. First time goaltender Brooke Yabroudy stoned the Billerica offense, preserving the shut out with an impressive breakaway save in the second period.

The Mite 1’s turned in their best performance of the season with a 9-1 win over Amesbury, where every player on the roster figured in the scoring. Girouard led the attack with 4 goals, while Dominic Carozza and Daniel Woodford knocked in two each.

Brian Chisholm had a goal and an assist, and two assists each were also notched for Morrissey, Sam Clauson, Dylan Troiano, and Matt Licata. Joey Pillsbury had one helper and Yabroudy was solid between the pipes again.

Squirt

Cavaliers AA keeps winning streak alive

In Valley League Youth Hockey action, the Cavs faced a tough Reading Squirt team but managed a 4-3 win. The Cavs jumped out to an early lead but the Reading team would not go down without a fight.

Cavs offense was generated by Parker Mabbett with all four goals while line-mates TJ Vitullo and David Wang and Cavs other forward line of Isaac Rogers/Brandon Hugh/Austin Ciszek did a good job moving the puck.

The Cavs defensemen Sean Kelly, Anil Rao and Ben Goolsby played well, while goalie Chirs Sullivan came up with a big save with seconds remaining on the clock to prevent the tie.

Cavaliers AA takes two

In Valley League Youth Hockey action, the Cavs came up with two big wins, outscoring their opponents 14-3. In their first weekend matchup the Cavs, came out a little slow in the first period, but exploded for seven goals in the final two periods to beat the Winchester Squirt Team 8-0.

The Cavs defensemen Sean Kelly, David Wang(1A), Anil Rao (1A) and Chris Sullivan had one of their best performances of the year, preventing Winchester from generating any movement with the puck which set the stage for the Cavs front lines. Cavs front lines of Isaac Rogers (2Gs)/Brandon Hugh (1G)/Austin Ciszek (1G) and TJ Vitullo (1G)/Parker Mabbett (2Gs)/Max Sears (1G) did an excellent job cycling the puck to create scoring opportunities.

Cavs goalie Ben Goolsby came up big recording another shutout. In their second matchup the Cavs were down 0-1 at the end of the first to a tough Medford Squirt team. The Cavs coaching staff focused their team efforts on solid defense and puck control for the final two periods to notch a 6-3 win.

The Cavs defensemen David Wang, Anil Rao and Chris Sullivan came up with another big performance, while their forwards dominated the play in the offensive zone. Isaac Rogers exploded for 4 goals, while TJ Vitullo and Parker Mabbett each recorded a tally, and fellow linemates Austin Ciszek (2As), Brandon Hugh (1A) and Max Sears (2As) had excellent games.

Ben Goolsby remained strong in net for the Cavs, turning away several Medford scoring opportunities.

BASKETBALL

Nashua Nighthawks

4th Grade

The 4th Grade Nighthawks lost a close game to Timberlane (34-33). Stav Alkalay had 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 4 points. Yassine Jakib had 7 rebounds, 1 steal and 6 points. Jordan Bodwell had 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 5 points. The rest of the team played their hearts out.

5th Grade

The 5th Grade Nighthawks participated in a basketball tournament in Merrimack.

The young Hawks played a majority of their games against older 6th grade teams, but battled the entire way. In the first game the Nighthawks defeated the host team from Merrimack 53-38.

Nashua was led offensively by Andrew Penkala (14 pts, 6 rebounds, and assist) and Nevan Roy (12 pts and 5 assists).

The team also received offensive contributions from Jeffrey Reza (9 pts, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists); Patrick Gillis (7 pts, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists); Casey McNally (4 pts); Jake Robbins, Chris Inzerillo, and Matt Wall, each with 2 points; and Gabe Perrault. Also playing well were Chase Hart and Andre LaPlante, who each played steady defense and also collected key assists duing the victory.

In the second game, the Nighthawks battled hard against the 6th Grade squad from Londonderry, but in the end fell 42-28. Nashua was led by Nevan Roy with 8 points and 7 rebounds. The Hawks also received good games from Chase Hart (5 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists), Matt Wall (4), Andre LaPlante (4), Patrick Gillis (3), Chris Inzerillo (2) and Gabe Perrault (2).

In the last game of the tournament Nashua lost another tough game (49-38). Nashua received big offensive contributions from Chase Hart (9pts) and Jeffrey Reza (9pts), who were both active from 3-point range. Also playing well were Matt Wall (6pts), Andre LaPlante (5pts), Casey McNally, Chris Inzerillo, and Tyler Downing (3 assists). Controlling the boards for Nashua were Nevan Roy (12 rebounds and 3 pts) and Andrew Penkala (6 rebounds and 2 pts). Defensively, the Hawks received solid efforts from Gabe Perrault, Jake Robbins, and Patrick Gillis.

The 5th Grade Nighthawks participated in the MLK 5th/6th Grade Tournament at the Derry SportsZone and came in third place. Nashua opened against the 6th Grade Spartans. The young Hawks battled, but came up on the losing side of the scoreboard. The Nighthawks received a good game from Andrew Penkala (7). In the second game, the Hawks defeated Melrose, Mass.

Gabe Perrault led Nashua with 12. Also playing well were Jeff Reza (8pts), Chase Hart (7), Matt Wall (5), and Casey McNally (4). Tyler Downing (2) had 2 assists, 2 rebounds, and a steal. Chris Inzerillo (2 pts) controlled the paint with 5 rebounds and steady interior defense. In the final game, Nashua beat the 5th Grade Spartans (36-32). Nevan Roy had 6pts. Also playing well were Patrick Gillis (6), Reza (15), and Hart (4). Andre LaPlante played well at the point and had multiple assists and steals.

The 5th Grade Nighthawks lost to North Andover 41-23. This was the team’s first loss of the regular season. The Hawks received points from the following players: Gabe Perrault (6 points), Chase Hart (4), Matt Wall (4), Jeffrey Reza (3), and two points each from Patrick Gillis, Casey McNally, and Andrew Penkala. Nevan Roy (12 rebounds) and Chris Inzerillo controlled the boards. Tyler Downing and Andre LaPlante played tough defense from their point guard positions, and also collected several assists.

6th Grade

The 6th Grade Nighthawks defeated Billerica 56-24. Nashua applied pressure most of the game and collected 19 steals, 5 of which belonged to Yanis Nyantenji, along with 10 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Tyson Thomas led Nashua with 10 points. Alonzo Linton followed with 8 points and John Champa with 7 points. Razz Alkalay and Alex Amigo were strong on the defensive end.

In the second game of the weekend, Nashua defeated Lowell 45-37. Alonzo Linton had 14 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals, and 1 blocked shot.

Yanis Nyantenji collected 8 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Matthew Franco scored 5 points and added 7 rebounds, Xahn Frater grabbed 16 rebounds and 8 assist. Sclyler Boykin and John Champa played aggressive defense and caused several turnovers and collected multiple steals.

The 6th Grade Nighthawks defeated North Andover 48-31. Alonzo Linton led Nashua with 11 points and 5 rebounds. Tyson Thomas had 10 points, including a 3-pointer and 6 steals. Xahn Frater had 10 points and 6 rebounds. Yanis Nyantenji was a force under the basket with 11 rebounds and 4 blocked shots.

7th Grade

The 7th Grade Nighthawks defeated Westford 48-38. DJ Frechette led all scorers with 21 points.

Kevin Genao (11 points), Jishnu Siddabathula (6 points), and Stephen Signorello (4 points) helped carry the offense. Max Osgood and Owen Amigo lead the physical battle on the rebounding and defensive side of the ball.

Nashua fell to Billerica in a hard fought game. Kevin Genao (6 points), Alex Moody (4 points), and Jishnu Siddabathula (4 points) contributed to the offense. On defense, Max Osgood, Joey Bernard, Owen Amigo, and Devin Gates played tough.

8th Grade

The 8th Grade Nighthawks won their first game of the regular season in an exciting game against North Andover (77-75). The game went into overtime, with Nashua winning on a buzzer beater by Ben Seegel.

The Nighthawks received a great team effort, with offensive support and scoring from Shane LeGraw, Chad Olivieri, Spencer Bergeron, Collin Morrow, Jack Barnes, Max Serra and Casey Fisher. Defensively, Nashua received good games from Garett Bozek, Ryan Penkala, and Brint McDonald.

BASEBALL

Nashua Little League

Registration now open for 2012

Nashua Little League offers levels for all boys and girls from age 5-12 years old. We also have The Challenger Division (5-18 year olds), a program for developmentally and physically challenged youth, helping them to enjoy the full benefits of Little League participation in an athletic environment structured to their abilities.

Spring baseball registration fee: $35 for the first child and $30 for each additional child (family cap is $75). Every child that applies by the March 11 deadline will be placed on a team. To register, visit www.nashualittleleague.org.

TRYOUT DATES
