Mitey Mite
Merrimack wins its opener
The Merrimack Cardinals Mitey Mite team kicked off their season on Saturday Aug. 27 with a 24-6 win against the Saugus Sachems.
The fierce offensive line led by Drew Vail, Ayden Durant, Jacob Crow and Matthew Gooddspeed allowed touchdowns by Ryan Williams, Mason Walters and two from Kaiden Orme.
The Cardinals defense also played well, holding the Sachems to only four first downs during the entire 60 minutes of play. Aiden Parzych had a memorable fumble recovery that got the crowd on their feet.
The Mitey Mites are off this week in recognition of Labor day but resume play on Sept. 11 against the visiting Seacoast Raiders.
Tiny Mite
Merrimack Red opens strong
The Merrimack Cardinals Tiny Mite Red team opened the season at home against the Youngsville Hawks. The offense controlled the ball for much of the game.
Danny Mello, Ryan Sheridan and Jameson Dillon opened holes on the offensive line to help Jake Trahan and Chaz Peters find the end zone. Additional yardage was gained by Cohen Leighton and Connor Williams. The Cardinals’ defense played tough, with impressive tackles by Ryan Turley, Jeffrey Burke, Nolan Anderson and Kyle Crampton.
SOFTBALL
Merrimack Magic wins Litchfield tourney
The Merrimack Magic U10 Babe Ruth team won the championship at the 8th annual Litchfield Invitational Softball Tournament.
In the elimination round, the Magic defeated the Southern New Hampshire Mad Dogs 7-2, the Windham All Stars 10-1 and the Rochester Slammers in the championship game 11-3.
The Magic pitched well and played almost flawless defense – committing just one error in three games.
Members of the tournament-winng team are Julia Valluzzi, Olivia Kapsambelis, Nicole Giles, Sara Manhardt, Mackenzie Francoeur, Lauren Brennan, Melanie Hopkins, Olivia Tsatsa, Demetria Gonzalez, Jess Trahan and Brenna Davenport. The team is coached by Perry Kapsambelis, Jim Valluzzi and Tom Giles.
SWIMMING
Southern NH FINS tryouts approaching
Don’t hang up your goggles at the end of summer. Add some splash to your winter with the FINS swim team.
The Southern NH FINS offer a competitive swim program from September through March for children 6-18 years old.
Tryouts will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 9-10:30 a.m. and Sunday, Sept. 18, from 9-10:30 a.m. Arrive anytime between those times at the Boys and Girls Club of Nashua, 47 Grand Ave., Nashua.
To tryout, swimmers must be at least 6 years old and able to complete 50 yards of freestyle and backstroke.
