ABERDEEN, Md. – A five-run first inning sparked Southwest regional champ Texas Tri Counties to an 8-2 win in six innings over New England champion Hudson in the Cal Ripken World Series at Citizen’s Bank Park on Monday.

The loss dropped Hudson to 0-2 in the American Division of the tournament. Hudson next faces the Maryland champion Charles County Chargers on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. and will need a win to keep its hopes of moving on to the championship round of the tournament alive.

Hudson fell to Pacific Southwest champ Eastside Oahu, Hawaii, 12-2, in its first game of the tournament.

Texas Tri Counties pitcher Ty Condel limited Hudson to two runs (one earned) on three hits in going the full six innings, striking out 11 and walking three. Texas Tri Counties stood at 1-1 as it went into its second game of the day Monday against the Pacific Northwest champs from Kennewick, Wash.

Hudson scored a run in the first and one in the sixth. Michael Simard homered for Hudson in the sixth inning, his second home run in two games. Tyler Christiansen and Daniel McCrystal also had hits for Hudson while Matthew McKinley scored a run and had a stolen base.

Simard started on the mound and went five innings while McKinley finished it off in the sixth.

Caleb Valchar racked up two RBIs on one hit for Texas Tri Counties, helping to fuel the first-inning outburst. Easton Migl also drove in a pair of runs for the winners.

After its game against Charles County on Tuesday night Hudson is down to face the Kennewick club on Wednesday at 2:30.

The playoff round of the World Series is scheduled for Friday with the championship weekend set for Saturday and Sunday.
