Hudson Heat win Barbara Hamilton Classic

The Hudson Heat U10 girls softball team won the 18th annual Barbara Hamilton Softball Classic by defeating the Westford Waves 3-2 in a thrilling come-from-behind victory.

The Heat went 5-0 on the weekend, beating teams from Cranston (R.I.), Goffstown, Concord and Westford (Mass).

Led by strong pitching from Alicia Salvalzo, Abby Trevains, Farrah Cestrone and Ryley White with solid defensive support from Delayni Kovalchek and Marissa Brangiforte, the Heat held the opposition to only four runs during the weekend.

Haley Peaslee, Elizabeth Derosa, Elise Yabroudy, Sarah Coyle and Kim Macia led the offense by outscoring there opponents by a score of 41-4.

In the final game versus Westford, White held the Waves to only three hits while striking out 15. Maddy Trevains and Peaslee had key hits in the fifth inning to put the Heat up for good.

The Heat close their 2010 campaign at the Tanner Classic in Woburn, Mass.

Hornets ASA tryouts Aug. 20-21

The New England Hornets ASA girls fast pitch softball program for players from northern New England who want to play top level softball is holding tryouts on Aug. 20 and 21 to add players to the returning core teams for the 2011-12 season. Tryouts at Selvoski Field in Bedford (off County Road behind the tennis courts) will take place both days from 8-9:30 a.m. for U14 (birth dates on or after 1/1/1997) and 9:30-11 for U12 (birth dates on or after 1/1/1999). Players should arrive 30 minutes early to register and warm up. Heat tryouts start this week

The Hudson Heat will be having tryouts for their fast pitch travel teams as follows:

U10 on Aug. 9 and 11 at 6 p.m. at Pelham High School’s JV field near the tennis courts; U12 on Aug. 9 and 11 at 5:30 p.m. at Pelham High School’s JV field near the tennis courts; U14 on Aug. 9 and 11 at 6 p.m. at the Kiwanis Field (95 Cross St.) and Aug. 14 from 1-3 p.m. at the Kiwanis Field; U16 on Aug. 10 at 6 p.m. at Kiwanis Field and Aug. 13 from 3-6 at Kiwanis Field. Milford Sliders tryout on Aug. 27

The Milford Sliders U14 ASA program will be holding tryouts for the 2012 season on Aug. 27 from 9-11 a.m. at Keyes Field in Milford. Black Widows U14 have two more tryouts

Tryouts for the 2012 Black Widows U14 team will take place on the following dates/times: Aug. 11 from 6-8 p.m. and Aug. 14 from 10 a.m.-noon. NH Lightning holding multiple tryouts

The NH Lightning ASA Softball Club based out of Concord is holding 2012 tryouts at Martin Field in Concord on the following dates: U14 on Aug. 10 from 6-8 p.m.; U16 on Aug. 11 from 6-8; while Aug. 13 is U10 at 10 a.m., U12 at noon, U14 at 2 p.m. and U16 at 4. Comets tryouts set for Aug. 13

The New Hampshire Comets will be hosting tryouts for the 2012 Season. The NH Comets is an independent Junior Olympic FastPitch Softball Organization entering their 14th year in existence playing at the highest level of competition.

The Comets primary purpose is to provide a supportive environment for female athletes to improve their softball skills and participate in quality tournament play.

Tryout date has been set for Saturday, Aug. 13 (rain date of Aug. 14). Tryouts will be held at Hanson Park, 50 Albin Rd., Bow. Times slots are as follows: U10 from 9-10 a.m.; U12 10-noon; U14 noon-2 p.m.; and U16/U18 2-4. Players should arrive 20 minutes early to complete paperwork and go through a proper warm up. Hurricanes tryouts set for Aug. 14, 20

The Northeast Hurricanes AAU Baseball Program in Salem will be holding tryouts for the 2011-12 teams at Michele Park (190 Lawrence Rd., behind Queen of Peace Church) starting on Sunday, Aug. 14: U9 and U10 at 9:30 a.m.; U11 at 11; U12 at 1 p.m.; and U13 at 3:30.

NH Grizzlies AAU tryouts on Aug. 21

Lady Panthers AAU tryouts in August

The Northeastern Lady Panthers AAU basketball club will be hosting tryouts for the 2011 fall season on Aug. 12. Tryouts are held at the Rogers Middle School at 43 Highland St., Lowell, Mass. There is a $30 tryout fee for all teams. Teams will be formed in all grades beginning with fourth to 12th (Class 2012). All abilities are encouraged to tryout. New England CatchingCamp has openings

The New England Catching Camp would like everyone to know that there is still space available for the 2011 Summer Camp. The four-day, 16-hour camps will be held from Aug. 8-11. This camp draws both baseball and fast pitch softball catchers from all over the country and is the only camp in New England exclusively for catchers. NECC will be offering a session for players ages 8-12 from 8 a.m.-noon and ages 13-18 will meet from 1-5 p.m. daily. The camp will be held at Lions Field in Hudson. The camp will focus on all the skills needed to excel at the game’s most demanding position. The sessions will include training on flexibility drills, receiving, blocking, throwing and all fielding skills. Wrestling

BGCGN K-8 camp set for Aug. 19-21

The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nashua is offering a summer wrestling camp Aug. 19-21 for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. Rookies and experienced wrestlers are welcome and will be challenged at appropriate levels. This is a great camp for the beginner who would like to take the step to the next level and it is also a perfect platform for the more experienced wrestler to improve their skills.

Featured coaches include Nashua High School South varsity wrestling coach Adam Langlois, Bishop Guertin varsity coach Paul Rousseau, Elm Street Middle School coach Herb Bennett and Gate City Wrestling Club coach Kris Rowlette – a New England high school champion and Division I collegiate wrestler. The camp runs Friday through Sunday (Aug. 19-21) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A $50 registration fee covers wrestling instruction and drilling, live wrestling (if desired) lunch daily, games, swimming and lots of fun. Walk-ins are welcome. Financial aid is available.

Basketball

Biddy coaches, officials needed

The Nashua Parks and Recreation Department is looking for coaches and referees for the 2011 Biddy Basketball season. Coaching positions are on a volunteer basis with requirements including an understanding of the game and ability to teach the fundamentals to children in a recreational atmosphere. Coaches are being sought for the following age groups: Boys Junior Biddy Division (ages 7-9) and Boys Bantam Division (13-15). Referees are being sought for all age divisions. Requirements include a thorough understanding of the rules of basketball and the ability to run the court. This is a paid position. Games run Monday-Friday evenings and Saturday days. Referees need to be 18 years of age or older. Contact the Recreation Department at 589-3370 for an application for both positions or stop by the Recreation Office at Greeley Park from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

IAABO holding Apprentice Class

The International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO) Metro Board 117 is seeking interested basketball officials for its entry level apprentice program. Classes begin on Monday, Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Alvirne High School in Hudson. Classes will run on consecutive Mondays, culminating in a written test in November and floor test in February 2012. Successful candidates will be certified by IAABO and eligible to referee high school basketball games in New Hampshire. Greater Nashua Elks Soccer Shoot scheduled for Aug. 20

The Nashua Lodge of Elks No. 720, with the cooperation of the New Hampshire Cobras of the Nashua Soccer Club, will be holding its 12th annual Greater Nashua Soccer Shoot contest on Saturday, Aug. 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Main Dunstable Soccer Fields (Rte. 111-A) in Nashua (near Main Dunstable School).

Prizes will be awarded to the top three in each of the eight groups (four boys and four girls). First place winners will compete in the Elks State Soccer Championship Shoot in Dover on Oct. 15.

The Elks Greater Nashua Soccer Shoot is a two-stage contest that best represents the skill levels of four age groups: U8, U10, U12 and U14. The participant’s age on Aug. 1, 2011 is used to determine the contestant’s age division. The Five-Goal Contest is a succession of separate smaller ground level goal targets for the U8 and U10 participants (15 kicks). The Grid Goal Contest uses the penalty kick distance to challenge the older U12 and U14 participants (15 kicks).

This year’s Soccer Shoot will be run in conjunction with the EDP Summer Scorcher Jamboree that will be sponsored by the NH Cobras of the Nashua Soccer Club. Professional Cobra trainers Peter Jean and Bryan Scales will be on hand to offer a series of coaching clinics as a part of the day’s festivities.

The Elks Shootout and the Cobra clinics are open to all interested boys and girls from area towns including Hudson, Litchfield, Amherst, Brookline, Hollis, Merrimack, Milford, Wilton and Nashua. All participants must register prior to their participation. Registrations will begin at 8:30 a.m. There is no charge for participating in either the Elks Greater Nashua Soccer Shoot or the Cobra Soccer Clinics.
